Bragging Rights Challenge

(WiGgLeRiCe) #1

I have a bragging rights challenge for you guys if you want to do it for fun. I had noticed a while back there were some ET movies done by talented people, so the challenge is:

Since there were no commercials made for Enemy Territory, how about you gifted people create some commercials advertising Enemy Territory for Splashdamage. The goal would be to keep the movies between 30 seconds to 1 minute just like real commercials. You can do longer infomercials if you want. lets see how creative you guys can be. :bump:

(Oxygen - o2) #2

to put on the TV?!?!!?!!?!?!?

(WiGgLeRiCe) #3

(Oxygen - o2) #7

ummmm…sounds ok

(DarkangelUK) #8

It’s just something fun to do jeez. Like somethingsawful.com’s photoshop phriday. It has no purpose, it’s just something to do.

(amazinglarry) #9

Sounds pretty fun to me. =)

(fattakin) #10

I just finished making my first .avi and it was hard enough.
Anyone proficent enough at it to do a faq / walkthru for us new to it?

Problems i had
how to to use Adobe Premire
how to batch process the jpgs from demo capture
why does ET crash after taking a few demos (need to move the screenies to a diff folder)
what other programs to use, virtual dub / fraps
how to encode in divx (or keep file size down)

(Fusen) #11

darkangel hows the tj vid coming along?

(Sauron|EFG) #12

Wikkit’s movie guide covers demo recording, TGA capture, WAV capture, a basic Premiere guide and more.

(fattakin) #13

Hey thanks Sauron, looks very helpful!

(eRRoLfLyNN) #14

Think this is a nice idea, wish I had the time/talent to do it :frowning:

If anybody needs some music stings or somethin though, I’d be glad to help out there.

jrb’s working on it as we speak. I think Tricking iT2 burned him out a bit so he’s taking it a little slower this time.

Someone emailed me asking what the basics were for making a movie. This is what i sent them off the top of my head. This is very basics, i can’t explain how to use Vegas, that’s what tutorials are for  Also included settings for XviD incase you want to use that to compress your final avi with. I get 20mb per min with sound and sweet quality.

  1. Capturing screenshots from a demo: In your autoexec or in console, set a bind for capturing the screenshots. This is bind x “cl_avidemo 30”, change x to any key you want, but it has to be an F-key (f1-12) or a key on the numberpad. Set another to stop capturing screenshots, this is bind x “cl_avidemo 0”. Play your demo, and when you get to the part you want in your movie, press the key for cl_avidemo 30. The demo will go all jerky and slow down. This is the game capturing at 30 frames per second. When you reach the part where you want to stop the clip, press the cl_avidemo 0 key. The screenshots will be place din your screenshots folder. Make sure you have alot of HDD space as each screenshot is quite large.

  2. Converting the screenshots to avi: Go to http://neuron2.net/www.math.berkeley.edu/benrg/huffyuv.html and download the huffyuv lossless codec, follow the instructions on the website and install it. Go to http://virtualdub.sourceforge.net/ and download Virtual Dub. Load it up and click on file> open video file. Browse to where your screenshots are kept, click on the 1st one and hit open. You’ll see a preview of your clip now frame by frame. On the top tabs click on Video> Compression… Select Huffyyv from the list then click ok. Next click on file> Save as avi…, select where you want to save it to and name it what you want then click save. It will now render the clip. The clip will now be large because it isn’t compressed yet.

  3. Editing the rendered clips: Go to http://mediasoftware.sonypictures.com/download/step2.asp?DID=501 and download the trial version of Vegas video. Load it up and drag and drop your clips into the app. Any music you want to use, drag and drop it in there too. Add special effects, text and any other stuff you want. Play around with it to get used to it. There are alot of websites with tutorials on how to use it.

  4. Doing your final render: Go to http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Koepi_XviD.htm and download the XviD codec. If you have any other versions of XviD, you MUST uninstall them 1st. You can do this from add/remove prograns. Now in vegas click file> render as…, click on custom then at the bottom click on the audio tab. In the audio format drop down box select MPEG-layer 3 and in Attributes select 32kbs, 32,000hz strea. Now at the bottom click on the Video tab. Click on the video format dropdown box and select XviD at the bottom. The click on configure. Now use the settings below

Use 2 pass encoding type.

Settings…

Profile @ Level set to unrestricted then click more.
Set Quatization type to H.263

Tick the boxes Quarter Pixle and B-VOPS, leave the rest unchecked.
Max consecutive BVOP’s to 2
Quantizer ratio: 1.50
Quantizer offset: 1.00
And check both boxes for Packed bitstream and Closed GOV

Click OK.

Set Encoding type to Twopass - 1st pass.

Click on Advanced Options

In Motion set Motion Search Precision to 6 - Ultra High
VHQ mode to 1 - Mode Decision
Check both boxes for Use chroma motion and Turbo

Now in Quantization, set these values in order from top to bottom

1
2
2
12
2
16

And check the bottom box.

Click OK, then OK again then do your 1st render.

When that’s done, open up the XviD configuration again and set Encoding type to Twopass - 2nd Pass.
If the button below says Target Size, click it so it says Target Bitrate, and set that to 3000.

Do your final render (replace the one you did when saving) and voila, shweet quality and a great compression.

That’s all the basics. If you have any questions, go to http://www.shaolinproductions.org and post on the forums. Or on IRC join #shaolinproductions on Quakenet.

btw

etpro supports camera scripting for demo playback, so you can do perfect pans, perfectly synchronized movement, etc.

you can also have the camera automatically track any entity you want.

iirc you can build the camera scripts with radiant.

(DarkangelUK) #17

I had a little play with that a while back. It works well, but i guess it comes oown to how lazy the editor is… as in after all the demo trawling, capping and converting… will he be bothered to decompile a map and play around in rediant until he/she gets the movement just right. Please don’t confuse this as a dig at it, it’s not… i think it’s excellent you have this included. I just don’t see many editors taking advantage of it. I don’t think i’ve seen much freecam stuff in any recent ET movies apart from slapping it in a corner for an alt view. I’ve been doing some freehand movement on an RTCW video im working on… and it’s easier than people think. I would post a clip but that would be spoiling it

Tbh i would LOVE transition cams that’s in Defrag for Q3. There’s no cam angle, movement and speed you can’t achieve with that… and the simplicity of recording the movement to a ghost file and playing back during the demo is just lush. But then they’ve had about 5 years to come up with that.

(bani) #18

i’ve seen a number of ET movies with sloppy freecam movement, where they were desperately trying to track players or entities with their mouse, and trying to track around with freecam like a camera platform but not quite managing it.

in these cases the scripting would have saved them a lot of time and effort and it would have looked better too.

transition cams? do you have a link on that?

(DarkangelUK) #19

Go to here http://www.planetquake.com/defrag/ then into the downloads section and get the top file, Defrag 1.9. Open it up and have a look in the docs folder (it’s like a novel in there!), check out the readmes on DemoCam’s, Ghost-DemoRecamming and Ghost-DemoCamSaving.

The very basics are you load a map, goto spectate… find positions on the map you like and save it. Load your start position… press a button and the cam will move from one point to the next to the next smoothly. You can set what type of cam you want such as player tracking, player tracking and pitch/yaw, speed of transition… you can have varying speeds from one position to the next. Next you record that movement to a ghost file. Load your demo and playback the ghost while capping your screenshots. You can even tilt the camera sideways… not sure how far it rotates, may go upside down.
