Bots

Are there any bots available???

I just thought I’d practise before going to play on the internet.

Judging by trolling around the PK3’s, I’d say yes.

Short: No Bots.

(RAMON) #4

since online gaming has become the norm most developers have said F**K YOU to people looking for bots

(Ifurita) #5

i have to disagree with that. I think people underestimate the difficulty with making bots that can effectively simulate good, solid team play - especially class and objective based - AND not eat up a ton of CPU power.

In DM games like Quake 3 and UT2003 where the objectives are pretty simple, bots are easy. Surprisingly enough, they have lots of bot support.

Get into team games (Tribes 2 “might” be the only exception I can think of) and I’ve found that bots either eat up tons of CPU power (Q3: Team Arena) or just aren’t much more than aimbots (BF1942)

So online play has become the norm, hey? That doesn’t mean everybody does it. Just sticking my two cents in - I’ve been looking forward to this mission pak sinse I heard about it for one reason - bot support. I also relished the idea at going at the single player campaign seeing that’s what I enjoyed about the first. So I was overjoyed when I heard it was a free download, and used what little mb download limit I had left to download it. So what do I find?

Both of these elements have been scrapped, meaning I just wasted 250mb on something I probably now won’t play!

It’s not like they publicised it - this thread is the first I heard of it. (I suppose I haven’t been keeping tabs on it as such though…) So anyways, I might play online a little - most likely I’ll just uninstall it (not much downloadage left to play with) Not Happy, Splash Damage! :frowning: I would’ve happily bought it if it were a full product, not this free stripped down release!

(wudan) #7

That doesn’t make a lotta sense - there are BOTs and BOTfiles in the release, maybe they just don’t have any UI for them, but the files are there. It’d just take somebody some time to figure out the console commands.

(vcatkiller) #8

Hmmm…interesting…I hadn’t got that far into it yet. Just checked out one of the pk3 files and, sure enough, bot files! Well, as long as the game dll/executable files are still compiled with the commands (ie SD didn’t remove them) I guess we could hack around until we find 'em. Would be nice if we didn’t HAVE to, though. I’m gonna fiddle for a while and see what I can get. Thanks wudan.

To RAMON:

At least I like bots because of the following reasons:

-They increase players’s skills before they play online (No more newbies ruining everything up.)
-They are good for map testing (Are the teams balanced ??)
-They are better than people in team oriented games (At least if you are the leader.)
-They are good fill-ups for missing people (For example if you play over LAN with one of your friends you can go on different teams and lead an army of bots against each other.)

So is there any chance that Splash Damage adds bots to this otherwise good game?

If SD decide not to finish this off - do you think there’s enough of the code there for a mod to finish it?

(SCDS_reyalP) #11

No, it just means that they didn’t rip out all the unfinished bot stuff. If it was just a matter of UI, they would have put it in. Even RTCW has some bot stuff left in the code, but that doesn’t mean it works.

Making bots that played ET well would be quite hard, IMO.

(vcatkiller) #12

Yeah, looking at it last night, that’s my final opinion - they removed the code from the dll’s but left the bots/botfiles in the pk3 file. It means LAN play is going to be dull unless you can get 8-10 friends together with a computer. :banghead: Well, it’s being removed from my system, I’m never going to use it.

jah I think that you mis understood me I am really in favor of bots. I’m ticked that they arent in the game. And I think that to say they arent added to any game because its too hard is crap. If its too hard to make bots then its too hard for me to get my money outta F@$KING wallet. And dont gimme but there are single player campains in most games. We all know how much fun those are second or third time around. Most single player campains are half assed and we all know it. For example I had no problem plunking down 50 for unreal 2. Played it a day later beat it and never touched it again. Bought unreal tournament 2003 played it and havent stopped. I know there are exceptions to this so please dont point them out its only a waste. I’m just saying developers used to think about the average joe with a 56k modem or none at all. But now its all about the lucky fellows with broadband. And I find it rather disturbing that they are just forgetting all about us.
