I know this has been asked before, but theres a lot of rumors now, post QuakeCon, that id or SD hired somebody from the community to make bots.
Is this official?
I really hope so!

yes, they hired. nope, bots aren’t official, neither did they say for which type of bot they hired him. they could have as well only hired him to program ai which drives the mcp or some other map-specific auto-thingy.
That could be true - but why hire some guy who programs bots, just to do map scripting?
BTW: is anyone else as excited as me about the prospect that they DID hire this guy for bots? I want bots in my QW!
dude, i suggest to stop that speculation as it leads to nowhere except disappointment when there are no bots in the final version. wait for an official announcement. i think if they introduce bots, then you could only use them as fragfood, because if they have balancing issues now, guess how the balance would be with bots. they’d delay the game til eternity. currently they’re producing a AAA title, with bots that aren’t perfect the game would become an ABC or whatever title, so i wouldn’t bet that there are bots in the final game :moo:
I’m not sure - if they are doing bots, I have faith that the guy they hired recently (who did the excellent fritz bots), will be able to make a bot as good as other games with bots (UT and CS:S). If so, then the game becomes a AAA+ title in my book.
First, it wouldn’t do the game much good to have bots. It’s too complex, and bots would be completely lost. Next thing you know is everyones bitching how bad ET:QW is (NOT bots !).
My guess is that they hired some AI coders because (confirmed):
- strogg Aggressor can launch a flying robotic drone to attack stuff/mess with people.
- strogg Constructor can’t repair manually, instead, he has a robot drone following him and repairing stuff.
The Infiltrator has a drone which he can pilot himself to attack people with.
The Constructor can manually repair things, and also has a single drone which he can deploy to repair something which will return to him when it is done.

Aw man im really impressed by the complexity of the strogg classes - i was almost overwhelmed when watching the Video tutorial - but thats a good thing as the game will have so much to give and last a long time
it’s not just a “rumor”, but rather something that slipped (robert duffy saying “the programmer we just hired to do bots for Enemy Territory…” and that they may or may not deliver).

i think this has been discussed here before too.
So that’s the balancing they’re trying to get done :bump: I’ve thought of this since I heard that id hired him (Maleficus was his name I think).
Maybe they’re just playing it safe by not announcing it. I remember when they made a big deal about bots for ET, and then it got canceled and the bots disappeared. Wonder whatever happened to those bots for ET - did they just suck, or was there some other reason why we didn’t get to use them?
i don’t think so. just imagine that there is one unbalanced map like railgun or the non-etpro battery. it can be a serious problem to replace that map, it’s not like you’d have to download 20 mb like in ET, for QW it’s 10 to 20 times more in filesize for each unbalanced map.
Isn’t etpro battery changed with scripts ?
I guess I read some misleading previews about drones, but I was mostly right. Still, spreading unprecise information seems the good way to provoke SD staff into talking.
One of them even said ‘once the repair drone is down, you can’t get another one and can’t repair’ or something like that. But I believe attack drone was initially Agressor’s tool.
Hmm. I wonder what special tools Agressor has, then. GDF soldier at least can deploy his weapons…
I wonder what exactly.GDF has to compensate for lack of forward spawn creation and no repair drone.
the only official ones i can think of was the allies you’d have on the singleplayer game, which was being made by… MadDoc? I’d gathered it was the difficulty with the bots that ended up getting that cancelled, but that’s unconfirmed.
Maybe they needed AI for NPC characters such as civilians that have to be rescued in a certain map.
I never understood why people always want bots.
In a game like Quake Wars, I don’t see the point in adding Computer controlled enemies when you could be out blasting humans who actually put up a fight.
Ofcourse, bots are always nice for the 15-20 minutes a person brand new to the game uses to get the feel for the game.
But I would rather see them finish the game, release it, then maybe in a patch add in some bots.
Who the hell would want to fight against NPC’s when you could fight against people who are actually a challenge?
