Bots For ETQW's Confirmed By PC Gamer

If they made bots like Quake 3 and Unreal tournament they would “suck”. You have to remember this is not just a deathmatch, the AI must do a hell of a lot more than just frag, the objectives make this game probably one of the hardest game to program bots for, ever. So settling for Q3 or UT bots will not suffice, as that level of AI would be useless and there would be no point in implementing the bots at all.
If they delay the game until 2008 because they want good bots, then i can live with that!
gdi! don’t give them any ideas !!! :nag:

I think its great you went to extra lengths to add bots, but I’m thinking to myself, “is this really a good idea?” I’ve had so many problems joining servers with bots running, and then just leaving because no human players stay. On the other hand some people won’t even rent a server unless they have bots to play with.

So its a negotiation process and in this case you have decided to go with bots. I haven’t seen them in action yet, so I can’t make a clear judgement on them. I will say, in the past I have had a lot of problems with the bots in online-based games (not just the crappy BF games, even in CS where the bots are fairly advanced.)

I honestly think we could have done well without them, unless there really is an outstanding advancement in their AI or playability. The worst thing to use with bots is simple pathing. You should have the pathing be determined by establishing a goal to reach, but allow the bot to “learn” from trial and error and figure out what path works best. Also, you must train them to stick together and work with their team, especially since this is a team-based game.

Basically, if the AI sucks like every other game, it will just be an extra feature rarely used except in empty servers. If its good, we might have a reason to play with them mixed with real players, and not have to worry if they can make it out of spawn or not.

I trust SD to do a good job, I’ve only ever seen positive things from them as a whole.

SKaREO you could try FritzBot for W:ET.

Edit:

It’s from Maleficus, the guy id hired for creating the ET:QW bots.

I think somethin like bots should be there as an addon not
something that would hold a game up as its online only.
Its bad enough to wait the earth for UT2008 but to wait
another yr for this argh!! If it came out around UT2008 did
then it would find itself is a bad situation with another AAA game
that many are waiting for, it then would have to fight for its players
but if it came out this yr then it would grab thousands from bf series
and UT plus all that are new to pc gaming.

I agreed with that. I love bots, I really do. I know im stupid but I bought Battlefield 2 because I heard the bots were so good. But the game had no coop??? And I could only play with 16 bots on small maps. That sucked. I just want to enjoy a decent bot match with my friends on LAN, and maybe play against them when I have no conntection to the internet. But the goal in Battlefield is not to make the bots good. The goal is to practice warm up, and that sucks… The goal in Unreal Tournament is for people to enjoy bots, and those games have good AI.

If the bots in Quake Wars have advanced AI that would be great. According to the interviews this seems nice. If they are willing to admit that the goal is to make the bots as good as REAL players I guess the bots must be pretty advanced by now.
