Bots For ETQW's Confirmed By PC Gamer

(AnarchyAngel) #1

According to a few ETQW fansites, the US May Edition of PC Gamer has confirmed the use of bots in Quake Wars. Here’s the small clip they are showing:

PCG: How has bot AI and waypointing been improved for ETQW over Fritzbot or bots seen in other recent games? What will we see that hasn’t been done or tried before in other games?

Dean: The great thing about ETQW is the emphasis on teamwork. Every objective requires the team to work together to complete the objective, and the bots understand this and will work with you and each other to complete that objective. Medic bots will give health and provide cover as an Engineer builds the bridge. A GDF FieldOps bot will hand ammo to needy teammates, and call in fire support to break the enemy defenses. Covert bots will sneak behind enemy lines looking to cause trouble, like disabling enemy deployables, etc.

Well I suppose that was a certainty after the announcement of the console versions. You can’t really expect console peeps to pick up an online-only game. Then if you give console versions bots then people will cry for them on PC so they had to dole them out there too. Although the thing with bots is that they are only fun when you play against them with a bunch of mates, playing offline with you against bots could be tiresome.

that’s a nice bonus, but no bot can replace real life humans no matter how good.

I hope this doesn’t mean that’ll you’ll be duped into joining a busy server only to find it populated entirely with bots!

(ayatollah) #4

hmm, good point. I would hope there would be some indication of the amount of bots on the server, if there are bots online, or that bots wouldn’t be taken into account when looking at the amount on the server.

I wonder if the medic bots, run right over your aggonizing body and decide not to heal you.

Or of the field ops decides he’s not going to give you ammo, because we wants to fire his artillery.

Oh, great. So now, besides xp save, no xp reset, 20 map campaign we’ll also see humans vs bots servers.

(ParanoiD) #7

Still as mentioned above, this could only be for the Console versions while we wont see it in the PC game.

Still, I will hate fops throwing airstrikes at objectives which I as engi would like to destroy (like spamming teh fueldump, an allied engi is dead already by walking in vs 4 axis, a teammate artillery would really complete the axis fest…)

(madness) #8

huh…It’s probably for single player. Like BF2 or smth :?

(nUllSkillZ) #9

A great addition.
Not only for players.
Also for mod makers.
As suggested somewhere else time for a survival mod.

xp save, no xp reset, 20 map campaign

Can’t wait

his description of what the bots do is a little vague. he has described pretty much the bare minimum a QW bot would have to do it will be interesting to see what kind of implementation the bots have if its a .aas or waypoint system like ET bots

also im not entirely convinced that bots are rely going to give such a good playing experiences for this kind of objective based game after what i saw with bots in ET. even complex bot behavior becomes quite predictable after a while and you wont get the crazy and unpredictable games like you do with just players

also it would be nice to have an indication of how many bots are on the server before you join. it can be quite a pain to spend 5 minutes downloading all the mini mods to get on some game server to find its just full of bots

on the other side of the coin as nullskillz has pointed out great news for modders and with bots already in the game there is sure to be some great possibilities for mods like a survival mod

amen.

(Nail) #13

Splatter Ladder has bot indicaters for ET, hopefully they will implement same for QW

I hate playing with bots, it totally destroys my whole reason for playing on-line games. However, I’m sure once the game is out; it will not be hard to find a bot free server.

(BondyBoy007) #15

same here, used to hate them in Q3! on the occasional times I’ve run into an ET server with bots I’ve left pretty sharply - negates the whole point of an online game imo.

(amazinglarry) #16

Yeah I’m with most everybody here in disliking the whole playing vs bots in servers. I certainly have no problem with the addition of bots themselves, but as previously stated, as long as there’s an indicator declaring there are bots enabled on the server I’m 100% ok with it. If not… well then I’m not going to be too impressed.

I hate playing against bots… it’s so boring and much less exciting than knowing the person you just killed or thwarted was someone down the street or across the globe, who is now swearing to themselves.

(B0rsuk) #17

(assuming you have an internet connection) bots are nice only if implemented like in UT. I mean, they are on the server but disappear once more players join in. This is, by the way, their original purpose - to entertain players while they wait for more people to join.

(Rahabib) #18

even for UT I dont want to play a bunch of bots. If i wanted to play bots Id just choose single player and play sans lag.

Also, UT bots are much smarter than most other games. BF2 the bots were really dumb. DODS the bots are just to make your server look full. Luckily for DODS, smart people will look and see what the ping is on the servers to check for bots before you join. Hopefully you can with ET:QW server browser.

Bots are good as long as you can tell from the server browser what server is using them and how many there are.

(zeh) #19

Bots are nice (I have defended the feature here myself) but they’re not meant to “replace” normal players as if it was just a question of choice. Whoever thinks this is the case is missing the point.

Anyhow, ideally QW:ET will have server query variables listing whether bots are enabled on the server, and if so, how many slots are used by them. That way the built-in server browser and third-party server browsers will know in advance what’s up with the server and can allow filtering when browsing. Joining an online server with bots is pretty frustrating.

(EnderWiggin.DA.) #20

umm, generally you can just look at the pings to see if bots are playing. ASE or xfire show the pings of players. ping of 0 = bot. Hell, ASE will even let you write a filter to remove servers with bots playing.
