Black screen when I open game

Hey.
Recently, whenever I start Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory I just get a black screen. I can hear the sound in the background.

This started happening a few days ago. I’ve tried updating my graphics drivers. That just messed up my computer for some reason. But when I uninstalled said driver, the game worked perfectly for the rest of that evening. I turned my computer off that night, and now I’m getting the same black screen. I have no idea why I’m getting this.

Things I’ve tried:

Re-installing the game (two or three times).
Purging the game, and then re-installing it.
Updating my graphics drivers.
Downgrading my graphics drivers.

This problem occured some time after I switched my RAM to a different chip, but I didn’t play the game straight away after, or before, so I have no idea if that’s the problem. I’m hoping to get my other RAM chip back from my dads computer tomorrow, so I’ll say if that works…

But until then, does anyone have any idea of anything I could do?

Computer specs, if you need them:

Windows XP Service Pack 3.
ATI Radeon HD 4850.
2GB DDR2 RAM.
Some ASUS motherboard.

I know it’s worked well on all of these components before, aside the RAM like I said above.

Really appreciate some help,
Thanks, Danny. :slight_smile:

(sorry for the Wall O’ Text)

try

Roll Back a Driver -> http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/driverrollback.mspx

or if above wont work

System Restore -> http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/systemrestore.mspx

to a point when game was working ok and do not update till next version of drivers:D

I had a similar problem once, it was caused by the fact that my graphics card could not display the default resolution of 800x600

lol, back then I solved it by connecting a different monitor to change the resolution, then changed monitors again haha, and that was when I had CRT screens that weighed a ton :smiley: mm funny times.

if this would be the case you could try making an autoexec.cfg in your etmain with these lines:
r_mode “-1”
r_customheight “1024”
r_customwidth “768”

or put them straight into the startup parameters:
-create a shortcut to ET.exe

  • change the target to:
    “C:\Program Files (x86)\Mapping - Enemy Territory\ET.exe” +r_mode -1 +r_customheight 1024 +r_customwidth 768 +vid_restart

Or you could trying starting up ET in windowed mode by changing it to this:
“C:\Program Files (x86)\Mapping - Enemy Territory\ET.exe” +r_fullscreen 0 +vid_restart

Hi I am also having a problem. I have a brand new mac, with all the drivers and video cards updated… (I just did a software update and nothing was available)… I had just recently downloaded enemy territory and it was working fine, just yesterday in fact. Well last night I went to play and it was just a blank screen with the sound (music and my mouse) nothing has changed within my computer and idk how something could have happened within 10 hrs of last playing it. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated, i hope i can get this problem fixed…

@$omator

I’ve tried updating & removing drivers and all that, nothing worked permanently.

Also, I have a feeling that a System restore won’t fix it. Mainly because if it did, so would re-installing the game several times.

Currently running a memory test with a program called MemTest. Thanks for the suggestion.

@stealth6

I tried that, didn’t work :<

Thanks for your suggestions both of you.

No one has a solution?

Today I tried putting my Windows XP CD in and repairing my installation.
That seemed to fix the game for a while, but not any more.
