Better NOT install ATI Catalyst 4.1 drivers

(Lekdevil.NL) #1

ATI posted new CATALYST drivers today, which are now at version 4.1. I haven’t tried them yet, but the following quote from the Release Notes is easy to miss, so I’ll post it here as a warning:

Known Issues

Significant performance loss is noticed in Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory. This issue is already resolved and a fix will be available in the next CATALYSTâ„¢ driver release

So, better skip these and try the next version.

Cheers.

I’ve installed 4.1 and can’t say I’ve noticed anything wrong, EXCEPT that my Favorites (servers) won’t show up anymore AND that whenever I click the box on the far right on a server to add it to my Favorites, the whole thing crashes. I read positive things about this version (good results on the Q3 engine), so I eagerly threw myself over it. The next version, what’s that, like 2-3 months? :disgust:

ATI has a Catalyst release cycle of one update per month, and so far they’ve delivered the goods.

No performance loss for me…
yes, I did know about that text in the readme before I installed the drivers

my shiny new 9800pro runs ET slightly worse than my old (uber overclocked) GF3ti200 :frowning:

runs everything else just peachy though

guess I’ll try out some older versions if it gets annoying enough, finding it playable enough atm.

I still reckon 3.9’s are the best, theres some funky bug with 3.10 not tried 4.1 if anything from 2D pops up on top of any OGL game it goes completely dark and have to do /vid_restart every time  I’ll stick to the trusty 3.9 till 4.2.

ATI have done there very best to keep users happy in the last 12 Months. Ask any Radeon 9500NP/9800XT owners who play FPS online what there favorite catalyst drivers are and you will get “trusty 3.4” or “Stable 3.6” or “awesome 3.8”. Whatever game you play there is a driver in the last twelve months which will make your system fly.

Thanks to Lekdevil.NL, I hadn’t actually seen that warning and I will stay on “not bad 3.9”

Stick to what you know is best. 90% of the problems on any game board and from users on IRC are always down to drivers. Be it updates or old ones, or just current stable ones fuckin up. The only time I see fit to update drivers is after a format then ill use the latest ones unless needed to for whatever reason. Ps, the other 10% of problems is me apparently.
