In Game Coms / Shooting The Breeze

(vurt007) #1

Hello there, long time CS player, new to Enemy Territory. Have to say i’ve really enjoyed playing ET the last couple of weeks, well done Splash-Damage.
Just a few of gripes (suggestions to the more reactionary out there):
1: In Game Comms ( whats the chances , what does everyone else think (see attached poll) , don’t really need to evangelise the benefits comms could bring to ET
2: More maps … does Splash Damage plan to release more soon?
3: Stability, hope this server patch comes out soon, server just died on me when I had level 4 signals and about 450xp 10 mins into second map in a campaign :???:
4: Server browser, custom filters please … ie search by map and search by player plz
5: A dancing banana ?

Looking forward 2 your responses / flames
p.s. vote!

By in game comms do you mean voice-chat or do you mean the voice commands that you can do such as “I’m a soldat”?

If you mean voice-chat then yes I agree, voice-chat is essential for an incredibly team-play oriented game.

(vurt007) #3

Yes, In game chat definatley. Quite a few times i’ve been trying 2 coordinate an offense / defense and have found the currently built in radio messages not really up to the job … ie “Oh gosh a covert ops has opened the back door and let 10 engineers into the base” (Battery)

there are a lot of 3rd party voice comms which already do a far better job than ingame specific comms… gamevoice, roger wilco, teamspeak, and ventrillo to name but a few. If you’re a clan wanting comms chances are you’d get a server for comms, or get one of your teammates to host a server anyway…

same with server browsers, there are some great ones out there already which supported ET from day one. If i’m going on pubs i generally use gamespyArcade (i’ll probably never live that confession down), but equally there are respected browsers out there which do a mighty fine job, and support other games too.

I do use roger wilco / gamevoice with my compadres, unfortunatley they are:
1: A pain in the bum to setup in the first place ( negotiating firewalls / stupidity / inability to ALT+TAB out of ET to set them up )
2: Compared to the built in comms in CS the quality is terrible (particularily roger wilco)
3: I can’t communicate with the rest of the players on my team ( unless I happen to know them all i.e. a clan match
4: Believe me the built in comms in CS makes life SOOOOOOOOOOO much easier … ( and don’t tell me to go back to playing CS  )

+Can’t stand Gamespy ( I admit haven’t used it in ages, I found it unwieldy and generally a pain … jeez they want u to register ffs ! :0)
+Found All Seeing Eye a bit complex to set up ( I am VERY stupid ) and again a bit of a pain.
+Love Ping-Tool, but don’t think they’re supporting it any more probably won’t integerate with ET … but I’l give it a try
+Computers are supposed to make our lives easier, I don’t want to have to maintain & configure 76.5.4.3 different applications to play a game … it’s supposed to be fun, why can’t it be convenient?
+Splash Damage have put in an in game server browser, which covers 75% of requirements, why not finish it off? ( I know u can’t please 100% of the people, 100% of the time ) , but searching for people I know online is a must for me … otherwise it leads to inflated phone bills and frayed tempers )
+I wish I had proper bullet-points

 • another dancing banana for your perusal!

Stay frosty >)

well, fact of the matter is, currently if you want to have in game comms, you either play cs (you knew it was coming), or you play wolfenstein on xbox live.
Firewalls / routers will always be an issue with games, and not just comms, i had more luck with gamevoice than with RW / TS in getting them to traverse my firewall. lately i’ve heard some great things about ventrillo, and used it hassle free (without a firewall) in a recent rtcw match. The sound quality i’ve heard in TS / Vent is very good, infact we’ve set up a mini radio station in TS2 with great quality.

as for finding players online, there are several websites and services online that search for player on various game types - with quake3 engine games you’re in more luck than in others. However, again, you’re not in much luck if you really can’t be bothered to use these tools, of if you and your friends can’t be bothered to set up mirc scripts such as Qcheck which will notify channels of your departure to server / inlcuding ip / game type… etc.

if you can’t be bothered to use the great 3rd party tools out there, don’t complain at SD for not building equivelant, yet less technical versions of these tools into the game.

It wont happen.

Ive played CS for 30 minutes before I sold it on E bay.

And I noticed that the quality of the voice chat makes the people sound like robot jones from cartoon network.

In game comms = lagg so no.

(vurt007) #10

Since When ? Again … I refer u 2 CS

(The W00dsm4n) #11

yeah, that would be pretty cool. Being a CS player myself, there are times where I REALLY want to use a mic. To set up plays and stuff. Even with complete knowlege of all the vsays, you still can’t say “I need a covert ops to come with me, steal a uniform, and open the depot door for me-all without being seen”

(-ScOuT--{A}--) #12

Weaver, you represent about <1% of the millions, possible billions of ppl that play/have played CS. It really links a team together, making for a more, team oriented game. You really get to know the people your jumping in front of bullets for.

Using 3rd party Voice chat programs, i.e RW TS2 V, are only team effective if everyone on the team is using it. I don’t know about you, but almost no one, at least when i go pubbing, want to go and download software and go through the all the hassle of dling, installing, setting up, moving past firewalls, for a 3 hour session. And anyone that doesn’t have the Voice chat, usually gets ignored and they become a lone soilder, which is practically usless on ET.

With on in game Voice Chat, Everyone on the team, wither they have a mic or not, will be in on the team plans/warnings, i.e. “Hey, gamerdude888, get your medic ass overhere!”, or “Theres a covert that just stole my suit, and is about to open the back door, stomp his ass and gib his body!!”. This way, team stratagies will include all members that chose to perticipate, if they dont like you, they just mute you.

As you can see, i Completely agree with an In game Voice Chat feature.

Roger Wilco has been working well… If it’s not broken don’t fix it.

(Ranstaton) #14

The point is not that there are other programs that do it. The point is that you want to be able to communicate with your team, many of which will not be on your teamspeak server or whatever. Having ingame voice chat allows you to actualy work together much easier. People either ignore or completely miss whatever you are typing (mainly because it is so small and disapears so quickly) making teamplay very difficult. How can you explain to engineer where he needs to go to defuse dynamite when most of your thirty seconds are already gone? The lack of voice chat is probably what makes public games so newbie filled. It is much harder for them to learn when the other person has to be patient enough to type everything out to them (several fucking times!!! ).

There is absolutely no reason for not including it when this game is supposed to be based around team work. For a game this fast paced it doesn’t make sense to force the player to type all of the complex and detailed strategies out when they could explain them much faster in words.

The only downside to voice chat is that you get to hear all the young voices, which kind of takes away from the mood… But it will greatly decrease the frustration caused by the inability to tell the medic to stop running and turn the fuck around to revive you, or to tell the dumbass screaming for a medic to stop running away, or to tell the soldier that you are in fact, on the same team as him and that you are only disguised as an enemy and that he should read the fucking manual before I tk your ass in order to get you to stop shooting me.

Anyway… Bump.

(vurt007) #15

bravo

(Coolhand) #16

If this is how people would use voice comms, i.e., barking orders, using profanity and generally being abusive towards other players then I for one would just leave it disabled even if it were included :stuck_out_tongue:

(=MLK=FOO) #17

Vote = no. I personally dont want to listen to some 10 yr old whine and bitch. Plus this would be a whole new avenue for those who like to disrupt the game(tkers). They get in and just scream or what have you. I am on voice comm with my clan mates and thats all I need.

(wouter) #18

/before you read this post, it’s a rant for TeamSpeak 2

I they want ingame comms (TS2) they should contact me.
We got the best app out there that could provide anything you would want and dealing with the problems you guys mentioned.

TS2 has a lot of features and codecs to suit every connection (dial up to 100mbit) thus bandwidth isn’t an issue. As this app allows for keybinding and such and subchannels you don’t have to listen to others whine. We could make an option that you can make a subchannel for your own use and invite a friend to it ingame. Or you could mute persons you don’t want to hear. It’s easy for us to make people choose a side (Axis or Allies) and have them connect to the appropiate channel so the other side cannot listen in. You could whisper to persons in your channel so no others could hear you talk. Firewall should not be a prob with TS2 since it only uses one port and TS2 was designed for working behind a router or NAT … Oh well… let’'s just say: you mention it, we got it

I’ll pimp the dedicated ET TeamSpeak 2 server once more for people that still use stoneage stuff (RW, seriously… ):
ip= voice.teamspeak.org:10160

Download the client at http://www.teamspeak.org , and please read the manual  It will take 5 minutes of your time to set up your voice activation properly and you will have endless pleasure of yelling at your buddies

So much for my rant

(Kendle) #19

Ditto, I can’t imagine wanting to use comms on publics. Who’s going to listen to who? Giving a whole load of people who don’t know each other another means by which to hurl abuse at each other sounds like a recipe for disaster if you ask me, although I appreciate it’s used in CS.

In Clan games it’s a whole different ball game, but then Clans develop proper procedures for appropriate and conservative use of comms, and using 3rd party software isn’t an issue either. (btw TS is the best I’ve ever used. )

(bogs) #20

Provided there is an easy way to see who is currently speaking, and an even easier way to mute the kid who wraps his lips around his mic and makes the loudest highest pitched noise he can make… built in voice com being standard in every game will turn the 6 billion dollar game industry into a 60 billion dollar game industry. mark my words.

2: More maps … does Splash Damage plan to release more soon?

Lots of people are very excited to start making ET maps. Myself I can’t wait to script a drivable vehicule :stuck_out_tongue:

4: Server browser, custom filters please … ie search by map and search by player plz

Try to get used to All Seeing Eye. It’s so much easier and faster than any game browser I’ve seen once you figure it out. And the buddy tracker helps me find SCDS guys so I can file complaints against them :stuck_out_tongue:
