Having these threads there in the first place, going on and on without any moderation, WILL put off newcomers. I’m sure many of the people who voted yes did so because we want a more peaceful mature discussion, not because we want to be mods ourselves. This is the official SD forums after all not just some little fan site where nobody cares about flames. Voting No means you’re voting Yes to threads like the one linked just above, and if they became the norm then I’d be off elsewhere.
ATTN: SPLASH DAMAGE FORUM ADMINS (and everyone else :P )
Thats true but why should you have to put up with stupid threads what are offensive or dont relate to ET ,not only does it clutter the boards up , it lowers the tone of these forums ,and theres always someone who replys to them wich keeps the thread floating.
Iam all for more moderators ,plus its simple to get rid of a chosen moderator if he abuses his power in any way.,so I dont really see any problems with this idea.
I voted yes, but as long as they don’t go on any powertrips… like just because they disagree with a logical argument, that they can’t lock it, or edit them. I think they should be called somethin like the Orkin men… Troll Exterminators.
Lol, well, SD admins have the right to take away priviledges at any time, so i dont think that will be a problem.
How about Troll Terminators?

bugger that rules me out[/quote]
You been a bad boy bb
But you get my vote to be a mod, thats if u want to be 1 since i know your a good guy
oh yeh… if we are going to have mods, Veng/Eng/BB get my vote
Good Splash Damage ET server ppl
:blah:
Unfortunately I have seen long time members swear and encourage the “trolls” by engaging in some “flame wars”. I’m thirty years old, and usually the first to swear out loud, been in the army and now a construction electrician that drinks alot of beer :drink: I’m not married and I don’t have kids. However, you will never find a post from me on these forums where I engage in profanity or flaming. Why? Simple, you (the reader) might have children that do browse these forums. Plain and simple courtesy.
Gaming should be a positive atmosphere encouraging teamplay and some sort of online social activity.
I have been surprised to see that profanity is permitted (ie: not locked, edited, removed by mods).
I do encourage more moderation, but the powers that be should be very selective. I would hate to see these forums moderated by “our guy from my clan” because of post count or date of registration.
I have been to Slippery Jim’s site that he moderates (I have never posted there, played with or against him, to my knowledge, or PM’ed him ) and he runs a good ship. He warns people at the beginning of a flame war and then locks that thread. That is democratic, I like that.
I have been to Ydnar’s site (RTCW For Dummies) this is a premium site (I have never posted there, played with or against him, to my knowledge, or PM’ed him, once again, lol ). He obviously contributes to this community in a positive manner. I make a point of reading his posts when scrolling through a thread. He doesn’t moderate any forum that I am aware of , but what he has contributed speaks volumes.
Perhaps now that we are all in agreement that we need more moderation, I would be happy to nominate those two as mods.
Ydnar’s site…?
If we’re talking about the same Ydnar, then I have to tell you that(afaik) this person… works @ Splash Damage… but he doesn’t live in the UK
:drink:
EEk! he’s not on the Team page… - But you can see that he’s moderating the Q3map2 forum
Remember to select someone smart enough to moderate fairly, yet dumb enough to do free labor.
the length of membership doesn’t mean much
neither does post count and general posts (normal discussions, no flaming)
imo it will alway be a big leap, i guess you just have to look carefully and hope for the best
i’m offering to be mod of General ET forum if there ever is a need.
although i really don’t care if i am mod or not
i have modded for several other forums and it both has it’s pro’s and it’s con’s
I voted no as flame wars crack me up on a monday morning - i love laughing at the abuse people give each other over stupid comments and it makes me smile. But i rarely engage or post in flame threads
I voted yes.
For the most part, these forums have been civil, but there have been occasions where some level of moderation would have been nice. The SD people have bigger fish to fry than to debate whether a particular post needs to be ‘cleaned up’ or a troll handled.
The only argument against member moderators seems to be a fear of them abusing their power. However, this typically occurs when the forum admin is running/hosting the forums, not just acting as a moderator. In the latter case, the SD team can always revoke their moderator status if they feel the moderator is abusing their power. Ergo, I do not fear a ‘power corruption’ of anyone appointed moderator here.

True that SD has better things to do, but nevertheless they need to stay alert and watch the forum, even when there are moderators.
I have moderated a forum for two years. In many ways it was just like this forum, a fun forum to be with no real trouble. That forum was really easy to mod, all I had to do was move a thread every day or so. A year later the n00bs came and the forum grew to a memberbase of over 30,000 people. Needless to say the n00bs took over. But still it wasn’t a problem. Sure I had to stop some flamewars and delete some posts, I even banned a few, but we could handle it. Which brings me to fase 3…:
moderators. In the beginning the forum was quite small, we only needed a few moderators and we were all friends. But in the end the forum grew so big we needed more people to mod, also people we didn’t know very well (yet). The makers of the forum (and the site that went along with it) were busy with work/school and didn’t have time to watch the moderators all the time. In the end some moderators started to make trouble, abusing their powers to win a discussion. Moderators started fighting with other moderators. Some moderators were friends with the creators of the site and thus they’d get the other moderators (which actually did nothing wrong) banned. At that time is was clear for me to leave the forum…
Anyway, a long and totally not interesting story. My point is that you can make some users moderators, but SD still needs to keep an eye on what’s going on here. I am very pleased that they even show up on the forums and keep so close with the community, so that’s great, but when they make people moderator they need to keep an even closer eye so that things don’t go the wrong way…
dun really care, i like this board the way it is…
Theres not much spamming, flaming (ironman is an exeption)
and nice discussions
jupz the board is fine without moderators at the moment
“maar voorkomen is beter dan genezen”…
