ATI finally tries to improve OpenGL performance

here’s the news:

excerpt:

[i]ATI produce tool to increase Doom3 scores ‘up to 35%’ with AA enabled

ATI Technologies have this morning made a tool available to HEXUS which supposedly improves scores in most OpenGL games when antialiasing is enabled at high resolution. Improvements ‘of up to 35%’ in Doom3 are explicitly mentioned by sources within ATI. The tool seemingly changes the way the graphics card maps and accesses board memory to better deal with handling AA sample data.

As well as supporting Doom3, the tool is said to increase performance in all OpenGL titles when using antialiasing. With Doom3 the poster child for that graphics API, ATI’s willingness to promote the increases in that application in particular are understandable.

The fix will shortly be rolled into CATALYST 5.11 according to ATI sources and a beta drop of that driver will be made available for testing in due course, before the final WHQL driver from Terry Makedon’s CATALYST team is made available for public download in November.

Sounds good, but it looks like they are improving AA opengl performance only, a bit useless when you never use AA :frowning:

yup. besides this, this performance gain seems to be only for the new cards

Don’t they always give silly performance gains with every driver release? (which seems to be one a month). I remember reading up on one set of drivers that was released that claimed a 40% increase in performance for HL2… suffice to say i never seen anyone with that kind of performance boost. Unless you count an extra 1 or 2fps gain as 40%

it’s the usual thing that ati does when a new game comes out, i bet the focus is on Quake 4 in this case. the driver isn’t finished yet, but they say it’ll be in the next catalyst release in november. so one could ask why they say this in october right before the Quake 4 release and not in november when the driver is released?

speaking of quake4, here’s an OT: ign review is out:

come on, it’s common practise for ATi and all the IT companies to bullshit about stats, especialling when q4 cod2 etc are coming out so soon and they are kinda getting beaten by nvidia atm for most powerful card
