Apple Hardware?

(jjpron) #1

This is a question mostly for the devs,
but now that the game is in closed testing stages, would it be possible to test it on a macbook pro, or a mac pro tower, to see how well it would run on that hardware (Running natively on Windows((bootcamp)), of course)?

Understandeably, Activision and id may not be too worried about supporting the Apple platform, but verifying that the game does run on those few configurations would add some more sales.

Apple does provide access to its hardware through a developers subscription:
http://developer.apple.com/labs/

Sure, there would be initial questions about support, but I think it would be worthwile to test the game on a few Apple configs, since they would be much easier to support than the myriad of wintel configs. And also, the game would not be running on OS X, but rather on winblows, so there would be no added support burden.

Thx.

NO TESTING FOR THEM!!! DESTROYYYY THEE MACCC!!!

 Ok ok, was just joking

Yeah yeah, they COULD :stuck_out_tongue:

The hardware involved would be CPU, RAM, and vid card. Those are pretty much the same on both platforms. Afaik, bootcamp isn’t an emulator, therefore should run same on both. I’m pretty sure that SD will have an Intel Mac version available at release, but that’s just speculation on my part.

sorry, I just didn’t get the hardware part, what’s different, my RAM, drives, vid card, even pro tools cards are swappable between platforms.

They haven’t announced a Mac version, so I’m pretty sure there won’t be one (at least not initially). What we’re talking about here is running the Windows version on Mac hardware, not a separate binary.

The Windows version should run fine on Apple hardware, just like D3 and Q4 does. I’d be more worried about PB causing problems than the game itself.

While on the topic of supported platforms, I’m not even sure W2K will be supported. :frowning:

It was mentioned numerous times that there will be a Linux client, so getting a Mac OSX port done should be pretty straightforward.

(Nail) #6

now you’re just being mean :frowning:

(cheesecake) #7

Yes but ID does the linux port for free. The mac version is done?/published by aspire so its in thier court if they want to do it or not.

(figvam) #8

What do you mean - for free? You’ll still need the game content, i.e. the game DVD, so you’d have to buy it.

(Nail) #9

I think he means in house, not free, as in they do the linux port as well as windows while Brad Oliver at Aspyr did the ET Mac port

A couple of us (namely Relaxer and me :P) have MBPs, and have been running ETQW on them through bootcamp for a while. I can’t tell you exactly what performance is like because the game isn’t finished and therefore not fully optimised, but it’s definitely playable.

Windows treats mac hardware as standard intel gear, so we probably don’t need to do specific mac testing. I don’t know what the plan is for supporting OS X at this stage.

Timothee at id released a universal binary for Wolf ET not long ago, check that out if you’re a mac geek

Yea thats what I mean

A major reason I’m gonna buy QW for is mapping. But the tools are all Windows applications.
So I switched to Mac a few years ago, all my Macs are still PPC machines, and actually I never really intended to buy an Intel Mac. But I guess I gotta do that for QW and put a Windows partition on it.
So my plan will be, wait until QW is out and OS X Leopard is out and if the rumours are right, new iMacs will be out by then too.
I always had problems using the Mighty Mouse in FPS games tough. It’s a little weird for that IMHO.

Thx Malarky,
you’ve answered exactly what I was asking.
I’ve got a windoze machine for ET, but would rather play QW on my MBP.
