Anyone to help me identify a potential wallhack?

Here’s the deal. We have a clan member who is (I consider) a very good player. As happens from time to time with good players, he was playing on a public server and they accused him of cheating even though their PB caught nothing. They created a .dm84 demo and passed it along to me.

Though in the video they are talking about an aimbot(cause of his number of Headshots) it’s pretty obvious he’s not using an aimbot. Instead the charge is one of wallhacking. I’ve watched the demo 3 times and the other admins from my clan have each watched it twice.

Though I feel there are a 1-2 instances that might have raised eyebrows I don’t think it’s conclusive evidence that he’s wallhacking and in fact each of these instances can be explained. The server admins where he was playing passed a permanent ban on him and have forwarded the video to EvenBalance who told me they wouldn’t do anything with the info because PB reported nothing to them on it.

My main concern is that I’m an untrained eye when it comes to this and I was wondering if any of you would be interested in viewing the demo and giving me your opinion.

I’m sorry if this is the wrong place/forum/site to ask I just didn’t know where to turn.
The video is about 10-12 minutes long and I will send a download link to any who want one.

Well if you can, watch it with ‘/r_shownormals 1’. You’ll be able to see through the walls and whatever and tell if he’s tracking anybody through them.

A warning though, is that there are times where it may seem like somebody’s tracking someone through the walls pretty blatantly but ends up just being coincidence. I’ve watched a few demos I’ve recorded of myself playing with normals turned on and there are times where it looks like I’m following people through walls, when it’s just a combination of how I move + the location of other players.

Anyway… I believe that’s the command to show normals. I could be wrong, it’s been a while since I’ve used it while viewing a demo.

Pass me over the demo, ill take a look at it for you. Ive had a few cheaters on my server who have owned up to using cheats. Ill have a look to see if any thing looks iffy about it.

A note: listen. If you hear someone coming, it’s pretty obvious one can pre-aim up to a certain degree.
Aimbots are mostly spotted by a player aiming for the head in a way that’s too fast, wallhacking works quite the same.
If a player can aim for the other’s head without even seeing him, you could have got a cheater. Note though that good players estimate a guy’s head before popping around the corner, especially in tunnels as you can aim allmost horizontally there.
As soon he’s correcting a lot, he shouldn’t be wallhacking at that point. It would be stupid to not aim for the head if you have visual contact with your enemy.

Lowering the timescale to 0.5 can allso help, you’ll see things better that way. (The sounds get messed up though)

I think most clans believe they are the best, and once a new player joins and makes a fool out of them, they get angery and ban them. I know players have called me a cheater before. They cant believe that I have killed them so many times in a row, what else they dont know is ive also killed other people, not just them. I also think some people play without any sound, or not enough volume, or their brightness setting is to low to see in dark areas. This would then frustrate that person into thinking some one cheats.

Just a few things Ive known to cause people to blame you of using cheats. I would just ignore them if you know your not cheating, and to find a better server to play on, with people who dont complain.

Thanks for all the input. From what I gathered from watching I wasn’t too impressed with how their clan played or admined their server actually. I’ve visited their site and they have over 3 pages of bans from their server… some PB, most not.

I will try watching this again with the normals set as suggested above.

Ok 2 more people (another clan admin and another top notch player) have reviewed the demo and their conclusion is also Not Guilty and very much along the lines of what Higgins said:

I don’t really understand why people do this. I know cheating is a problem and it can be a tricky and touchy one to handle. However, perm-banning and auto sending your footage to PunkBuster even when there’s been no PB violation? Doing that ENOUGH TIMES to warrent 3 forum pages of 50 posts each? Each one of those posts is just people asking to be UnBanned so you know the number of people banned has to be that much higher… surely a clan behaving in this manner would have to think something was wrong with the way they’re doing things.

And if they ban all the talented people? who do they recruit? :suspicious:

Luckily I don’t think that’s true. Yes, some clans (and non-clanned server admins for that matter) will assume that anyone better than them is cheating, but the majority won’t.

I completely agree with the rest of your post though. :slight_smile:

isn’t it possible to get client-side screenshots via punkbuster to identify wallhacks? why didn’t they make some?

what server was he playing on? haven’t used the pants-ah recently, so i wanna get me some fun this weekend :smiley:

Even if you know how to take them pb screenshots are (unless things have changed lately) unreliable. Besides, there are cheats that either blocks them or turns off the cheat when one is taken, so pb screenshots not showing anything suspicious (which would be the case here if he’s not cheating) is not conclusive evidence.
