Anyone spotted a potential hack player yet ?

We know they exist and wankers like Unstoppable have been recorded as downloading them but does anyone actually play on non PB servers where these may be employed or have they possibly been spotted on a PB machine ?

I havn’t seen any cheats that I know of.

Another thing, in regular wolfy you always knew whenever you came up against a DAMN good player and manys a time I have heard from the lads in my clan, “don’t go near that bastard he’ll rip yer head off”. They’d very often be correct and the player in question would be a friggin’ headshot ace and that fella would be remembered and stored in my “He’s a complete killer cunt run, away and kill the noobs instead of being slain by him” drawer. In ET I can safely say I have come across no such players, some are good, some are very good but NO ONE is a “complete killer cunt”. Wonder why ?

Yes, there were some pb screenshot a while back. From the Beer clan, I think.

I haven’t seen anyone I thought was cheating. I did see someone get kicked for accusing the server admin of cheating (and being a complete cunt in other ways) :stuck_out_tongue:

I’ve noticed that too. The people who were insanely good in wolf are still very good in ET, but not as hard to take down. I think part of it is that SMG damage is reduced at distance, so the people who can hit you across the map don’t get such an advantage. The slower rate of fire gives you more time to react. Antilag makes hitting easier, even if you have a pretty decent ping.

Let’s just forget about cheating and play on. Playing vs a cheater makes you 10 times better. The best way to handle these things is to quietly notify evenbalance and keep it in low profile. Do not yell CHEATER, but try contacting an admin first. Talking about it will attract more people. Everyone wants to try this out.

We just had a guy kicked from our server (Mr Donut’s Hole) by PB saying “kicked for WALL HACK.”

So that’s the first person I’ve ever seen "cheating’. It was fun to see him kicked. :beer:

What consitiutes a cheat? Only modified data injection? Everyone downloads them. To make a better one, to block this one, just to have. Downloading them only means you have free time. Reverse engineering them means you have WAY too much free time.

What about in-game exploits? When you see “Defused at the Health and Ammo Cabinets” you might get cheesed, but is it a cheat? CheatING? But then cheating could be just 8 lvl4 panzers and medics not doing the objectives, just pegging the defensive spawn and calling it “fun”. (IMHO that’s much much worse as it requires consent and cooperation.)

As you say, a newbie thinks anyone that can kill him everytime single time must be cheating. Then again, I cannot explain why it took 10 headshots to drop a fresh 6 XP engy, point-blank and both of us standing still, when he should have at the 3rd? Can you? Can SD?

It used to be FPS cheaters would brag loudly, egomaniacs that they are. Who knows? Maybe it’s just too early. They’re already playing on their hacked and pirated copies of every other Q3 type and why bother downloading this little free thing?

I’m sure some mondo-cool elite coder dude is running his own personal beercode that he won’t share with anybody. Catching him would require effort and preventing him, large logs and packet capture streams. Not much we can do about his type anyway, so play on.

There’s always a variance to what that means. From those that think everyone is when they aren’t, to skrptk1d5 who downloaded what their friend told them to, to proggies the devteam would like to hire. Cheaters, one and all.

That aside, what if I rigged up a perfect HMD tracking system where all I had to do was look at your avatar’s head and fire individual shots and get 90%+ accuracy? Mouse? What are you, some kind of caveman? Put this on. Look. Shoot. See?

Ahh, would that be cheating? By that same token you could make a case for computer hardware as a cheat; just because someone doesn’t have the money or desire to buy a cutting-edge gaming machine and is playing on a P2-450MHz GeForce1 non-broadband, well he might think that everyone is cheating!

I wish it were as simple as “Haven’t seen any either.”
…but it’s not. :frowning:

It might be that you’ve actually seen a cheater but didn’t notice.

I was curious if there are any cheats yet developed for ET and I managed to find one multi-cheat that worked (doesn’t work anymore, reported it to Evenbalance and they are doing a great job). So I tried this “cheat” and it totally sucked. I hit ten times better without the aimbot which only seemed to aim the dead bodies and stuff like that, colored models really give you no benefit compared to my normal tweaks and they get all messed up after a map-change, the only thing that could help you a bit was the wallhack that was also full of weird bugs and it also freaked out after a map change. I can honestly say that I play much better without this cheat (and NO, I would not use the cheat if it worked).

Please don’t start a huge flame-war about me trying a cheat, we’re not the HL-community.

I’d love to try one some time JUST to see what playing a map would be like. It must be boring as fuck though, basically running about, no aiming, constant easy killing, just being careful of your back a lot. Seems kind of pointless.

I can’t explain it, but I would put ‘cheat’ down as about the least likely. I’d put ‘lag’ down as the most likely, and ‘bug’ as the next next. That sort of thing is essentially impossible to do client side in a quake3 engine game. It is possible that the server admin set his server up to cheat, but I’d guess that is fairly rare.

The guy I mentioned in my previous post accused people of walking through walls. Again, that is something you simply can’t do client side. There have been games that trust the client completely, but ET isn’t one of them.

Before you assume cheating, have an idea of what can and cannot be done.

Certainly some people must have private cheats, and most likely many of them won’t get caught. However, I don’t think they are currently having a significant impact on gameplay.

Well I was playing on this one server and this enemy medic was basically jerking around whenever he moved. He was lagging out his ass, but he still managed to kill find due to the fact that you could barely hit him and the fact that even if you hit him, he had a shit load more health…

That was not fun. Especialy since the server didn’t allow votekicking…

theres alot of voodoo and alien abduction like theories going around about cheats. the reyalP has a solid point, the first step is knowing what is possible and what is not, and that requiress some knowledge of how the game engine works, whats client side and whats server side.

you wanna read some hysterical threads, go to americas army forums - youll piss yourself laughin, esp now that PB will be integrated into AA. OH theres some quality reading to be had. Its official, its the US army, and alot of the guys who play it are very new to online gaming - just dont go in there w. a sense of humor, uncle sam will strike ye down w/ furious anger : )

I don’t know if this was an intentional cheat but I have seen people with some extremely high lag that made aiming very difficult. My lag-o-meter said it wasn’t my problem and it only occurred with specific people. To further complicate things, these people seemed to have no problem hitting me.

If it is a cheat and not just a bad connection on their end, I think that must be pretty innovative. Aimbots get all the attention from PB but no one thought about dodging.

Btw, while we’re on the topic, PB has some major implementation issues and I wouldn’t trust it to stop anything.

That’s flawed logic. Dangerous, in some professions. Daily (hourly??) we learn of yet another thing being done with a computer that was previously thought impossible. Just because THEY thought it couldn’t be done doesn’t mean it couldn’t - it means they couldn’t envision it. Ludicrously complex or as simple as an extra bit in a precise data stream to hiccup a gameserver to restore full health, or segfault any app, or root that luser’s box and wipe it, or… everyday the list grows.

Just because gamecode has rudimentary (or complex) sanity checks does not mean that tomorrow you won’t see a guy teleport from one side of the map to the other instantly. Or something equally jaw-dropping amazing. Everyone will scream: But that’s not possible!! And then they’ll ask: how the fuck did you do that??

Cheats exist, cheats will exist, even the ones that can’t possibly exist. Until they do.

Still, it’s fun to accuse random 13-yr-old egomaniacs of cheating just to hear the ranting and poorly spelled cursing. And participating in, what could be described as flamebait, discussions on the subject. :slight_smile:

PB is doing good job. The cheat I tried has updated several times, all because PB has detected the last one. The newest version is also detected. I don’t see how cheating is going to be a problem if Evenbalance continues this way.

There are aimbots and wallhacks for E.T., I know this for a fact. There’s a site that you can get them from which even provides instructions on how to re-compile them using VC++ so as to remain undetectable by PB.

Even so PB does pick them up after a day or so, so the dedicated hacker needs to continually re-compile.

Having said that, I’ve never come across anyone who I thought was too god-like on an E.T. server. I’ve come across plenty on RTCW, but even the hackers admit there’s currently no working aimbot / wallhack for RTCW.

The thing to bear in mind is that some people really are that good. If you see somene who appears too good, spec him for a while. If he never appears to miss, or seems to be able to shoot people coming round corners like he knew they were there with such regularity that it can’t be put down to luck or good anticipation, then take a demo and get in touch with an Admin (most servers give a IRC channel in the MOTD).

PB can only react to reports from people like us. There will always be someone, somewhere, who has a hack, but I think they are very, very rare, and 99% of the time there’s some other explanation as to why a particular player appears to be so good (like they really are that good).

I did see one guy in AA who was using a wallhack. me and my m8 both specced him, then ratted him out : ) outside of q3, thats the only time i could definitively say that I saw someone using a cheat.

I agree, in ET it is unlikely a player with a bot will own the server up and win the map for his team. wallhacks and aim bots arent as big an advantage in ET as they are in AA for ex. and from posts from those that have ‘experimented’ w/ bots ( like one experiments w/ murder or homosexuality : ) ))) they arent that good at what they purport to do
