Anybody else think Brink should have been in 3rd Person?

(morguen87) #61

TRIBES had a button you could press that let you toggle third person on/off and it made skiing much easier. Granted, you could move a lot faster in that game than you can in Brink, but I’d imagine something similar would make smart a bit smoother.

Though I can see how it could potentially harmful. Letting camping defenders see around corners immediately comes to mind.

Well as you say Tribes has skiing, lol makes sense for that game. Just my big problem is the thought of having it at all be an optional on/off for any mode. NO WAY… But as a stand alone game mode it could work but that would require a lot of thought regarding all the current mechanics, abilities, camera angels, etc… Just seems like it would be a lot when there is so much still needing to be done to the core of the game. Rather have them focused on the core game itself and not other game modes at this point. LOL and your last comment was a common theme from an older thread about it.

@ Thrill11 - OMG dude youre digging youself a hole, I would just stop now before you bury yourself.

I used to post on the Bethesda forums and I ran into the same problem. Every single idea that was thrown out was shut down by a barrage of people no matter what it was. Duel wielding pistols? NO. 3rd person? NO. A map maker? NO. Team deathmatch and other classic game modes? NO. Anything else that is not already in the game? NO.

Brink didn’t really have much that made shooters fun and accessible and popular because it tried so hard to be different and because of that the game failed. Plus it was broken. And there’s a chance Splash Damage could go under from this. Other popular developers have gotten shut down for a lot less.

But yeah, developers do need to listen to their fans more. I remember one interview with someone at Valve that basically said 'We listen to the playtesters complaints but decide to make out own decisions because we’re a big, famous developer and they’re getting paid $6 an hour to play a videogame so what do they know?"
Moving on.

The whole “3rd Person as a separate game-mode” suggestion was pretty good. As stated earlier in this thread, MW2 did that and that was my favorite game-mode. Didn’t break the game or anything or distract from the other game-modes. I mean how much programming would it really take to implement that? not much I don’t think. It’s not like building something from scratch. You can already make the game 3rd person on the PC with some console commands from what I understand. And you can also mod the console version to it if those videos are to be believed. I’ve actually thought about doing that, but i don’t know how to and I’m pretty sure it’s illegal.
To do it easy it would probably end up mroe of a bare bones version, just basics. It could work but would be all this game is trying not to be for the most part. Maybe someday down the road but not anytime soon, lets focus on the current core game before adding all new modes. If anything I really like the idea of adding it to the Parkour Challenge or making another one made for 3rd person, so long as the leaderboards would be seperate. But again if it means something else doesnt happen or it takes away from somethin else then I am agaisnt it. Want the core game optimized and more core content.

Not even gonna comment on this outside of PEOPLE LIKE YOU are the reason games like COD have become crap heaps along with many other franchises… There is a reason they are game developers and we arent, they live it EVERYDAY, we do it in our free time.

(Wraith_shadow) #67

That’s just it though. It’s already IN the game. the only thing they would have to adjust would be for balance purposes. Anything it affected the game would be possibly a plus side advantage (seeing around corners, better melee awareness) People are just asking to use something that’s already there. I’d love it even if it were only usable during S.M.A.R.T. running.

(thrill11) #68

Oschino1907 refer to my previous post. I’m not digging MY own hole btw. I’m just digging deeper into the 100 foot crater that you already started on.

(Oschino1907) #69

Its already there for Spectating purposes… Another gripe from many as there is no FP view for spectating only 3rd.

“That trailer was made me buy the hell outa that game. We got scammed.” - Thrill11

Dude that says enough right there, no need for me to even elaborate on that, anyone who “gets it” understands exactly what kind of player you are.

(Gorilla Gunk) #71

Gamertag is Mr Lies. Not on Brink all that much right now, kind of just waiting for the DLC. And I just bought Bulletstorm and Crysis 2 so I need to get my dollars worth out of those (By the way, Bulletstorm = Awesome game). Plus I need to buy a mic. Damn thing broke on me. My fifth one.

Post the main idea of that thread, then post Dark’s, then post mine. You’ll see what I mean if you read it. That post is refering to how the game didn’t include a lot of the content you see in the trailer. So, shame on you for not reading. Just don’t go thread hopping and killing others good ideas for the game anymore please? Posting ideas for the game is one of the main purposes of this furum. ^^

(MrFoxer) #73

3rd person would in no way ruin “the whole purpose of the game”

(thesuzukimethod) #74

my primary concern is the “jack of all trades, master of none” problem. I’d hate for devs to feel like they have to develop for multiple tastes (and therefore water down their product - tacked on multiplayer is the worst offender here)

I can see the 3rd (2nd!) person perspective for tactical/cover based shooters (or portions of the game where this is the case) where ADS is less important, and the chaos of a firefight hasnt yet erupted. But for close quarters firefights it alters the gameplay component in a way i find problematic (I HATED the uc3 mp beta, and I loved UC2, and will likely love UC3 SP), and as mentioned, corner camping, etc. (one thing I felt was SUPER cheap about MGS4 was using the camera to see around corners my dude could no way see around)

for consistent gameplay and experience, sometimes not having a choice is better, b/c the devs can polish the mode they intended rather than trying to do everything (i for one, dont think its so simple as just flipping it on)

(bastuden) #75

I honestly used to think your were pretty cool, tsk tsk.

(Wraith_shadow) #76

Did you even watch the videos posted? It showed you how to play in third person. Not as a spectator, but as a player. That’s kind of… you know… in the game already, like i said it was. It’s possible, and enough people would like it to merit looking into if from the devs side. No one is saying that it should be mandatory or required. Just an option for those who want it.

(tokamak) #77

Yeah, sure, why not, Brink already ventured so far from what it entails to be a shooter that they might as well make it 3rd person.

(Stormchild) #78

They could make in an add-on, a mode of parkour race that allows/forces disabled weapons and forces light bodytype and allows/forces 3rd person view. (could be adjustable server side, so you can have either pure racing or racing+fighting/melee?)

Imagine a nice cluttered map with like 4, 6 or 8 (max ?) players on the starting line, rushing to the end line like a bunch of crazy yamakazis. Also would exploit the full potential of the inertia mechanics of SMART (I’m sure you guys know already that inertia plays a role in your SMARTing).

THIS could be a very nice alternative mode. But I think dedicated maps would be necessary.

Please SD, think of this ! Could be set in training camps of either resistance or Security.

(tokamak) #79

Indeed, but not before they put brother Chen and Mokoena in racing karts and let them race across the ark, as an add-on. That would be a nice alternative mode.

(Stormchild) #80

duh, not enough fuel for those karts, + very difficult to SMART when riding karts, I think (never tried though). But nice tentative.
