Any plans for DRM on this game?

(DoubleDigit) #1

Something like Starforce, Securom and/or activation limits?
I was about to purchase Wings of Prey when I found out it has Starforce in it, even though you can get it from steam, which is enough to ensure only the buyer plays the game.

Needless to say, I will not buy Wings of Prey or any other title that has this crap in it. No matter how much I want it.

Securom… Always brings out, shall we say… Passionate discussion, among gamers. Not sure about this forum, but Securom discussion usually tends to end with fighting, mods should make a note of this thread.

Personally, I don’t really approve with Securom. “…Blah blah blah only punishes legit gamers since pirates will crack it any way…” and all that. Won’t stop me from buying the game if it’s good enough, but I still don’t like it.

(WhiteAden) #3

well put…

yeah… Securom is a pain, but if the game is good enough, it’s just a minor bump in the road…

(passion!)

but legit buyers shouldnt need to deal with this speedbump when it just gets cracked and becomes smoother for non legit.

(signofzeta) #5

if pirates can crack a game with securom or starforce, then securom or starforce isn’t doing its job.

what’s the alternative? where cracks are impossible, and speedbumps are zip…

(BioSnark) #7

Steam games can be cracked, too.

(Apoc) #8

Everything can be cracked…my hope is that they have a mediocre anti cheat system with little speedbumps, and an effective banning/kicking/spectating option

I didn’t say they can’t. Some say that activation limits prevents users from selling the game after they played it, but Steam prevents that. Unless someone is willing to give his account credentials with all his other purchases.

But, since Securom/Starforce and any other copy protection only pisses off legit players and doesn’t do anything to prevent pirating, why throw away money on them?

Stardock entertainment released Demigod with no copy protection and even used this as a marketing tool. Sure the game was pirated like hell but even so, it made it to top 3 sells when it was released even if it’s an obscure title.

I’d love to hear Paul at the next interviews bragging about Brink not using a copy protection system.

I’m pretty sure the question has been asked before. If I’m not mistaken the answer was that it is up to Bethesda which copy protection the game will have.

(DoubleDigit) #11

Did any of previous Bethesda titles had “copy” protection?

LATER yeap, they do use securom, apparantly only for disc checks. Still too much for me.

(murka) #12

Multiplayer games are much easier, require a login like etqw and it’s done, but i don’t think anyone will like having to have net connection to play sp, what if you lose net because of isp fial and want to play sp… oh wai.

I really hate securom and such, every time i counter one a google search for the crack arises, even tho i legally own the copy, i really dislike waiting 30sec for the game to start etc.

(DoubleDigit) #13

I like the fact that no SD guy replied to this yet, it’s like they’re waiting for the thread to die on it’s own.

(Apoc) #14

Whats everyones opinion on PunkBuster?

(timestart) #15

It’s useless.

(DoubleDigit) #16

for punkbuster I don’t like the fact that it runs even if no game is running.

Ah, so you’re completely unreasonable and don’t think that they’re entitled to protect their product at all.

And now you’re basically accusing them of silence meaning they’ve chosen a DRM you won’t like. You’re just getting all warmed up to flip your lid and shout how they sold out to Bethesda etc.

Given your standards I’m sure you’re going to find something to complain about anyway. How about you do us all a favour and don’t get all customer rights political in a small forum, k? A larger, general gaming forum where you can tell everyone how you buy games that are morally right would let you preach to more people.

(DoubleDigit) #18

Please enlighten us, how exactly does Securom/Starforce or whatever protects their product?

(AnthonyDa) #19

Adding some nice lags here and there btw.

I think the security on QW worked fine. Let the pirates have the offline play, it will only frustrate them knowing that they can’t play the game multiplayer and will eventually have to make a trip to their nearest store.
