Anti-lag blows

(Snowman) #1

Seriously you guys should play on a server with it disabled and see the difference.

It seems like it’s designed to help 56kers by screwing broadband players.

Great game but ditch the anti-lag.
Please don’t flame unless you have tried the game with it disabled.
I don’t know how anyone but a 56ker could like it.

(bani) #2

it levels the playing field for all.

whats the matter, dont like being pwned by 56kers?

ive played with it disabled since first rtcw beta test, and then enabled later in 1.4x. and im on broadband. and i have no problems with it at all. ive played on servers where my ping is 8, and where it was 400. no problems.

(Snowman) #3

No I don’t like catering to 56kers. Most of the players are broadband and it ends up screwing them to cater to the minority.

What are you talking about??

It doesnt screw anyone, even with my norm of about 100 ping, with broadband, i still dont like compensating for lag. Anti-lag compensates for the lag “Lead time” I used to have to test EVERY server i went to. (In Half-Life)

(bani) #5

how so? be specific, give examples, and show your work. you’ll be graded.

(wudan) #6

I don’t get how it hurts BB players.

At worst, everyone’s ping gets a little high at times, this seems to really smooth out the wrinkles to me.

(bani) #7

it doesnt

nope, antilag doesnt do a single thing to players pings. the code doesnt do anything like that.

(Ao1SYS) #8

All right I’ll bite…

What DOES the anti lag code do? Lets hear some specifics here. So far this debate sounds like “Yes it does!” “No it doesn’t!” “Yes it does!” “Does Not!” “Does to!”

Looks like this argument could use some technical assistance. Anybody up to it? Ifurita…?

(Weaver24) #9

Never tried with it disabled, but it couldnt be worse than with it enabled : P

Ok, for those that want to know…
http://www.planetquake.com/alternatefire/unlagged_faq.html

gives a good explanation of the unlagged code, which I believe is
very similar to how anti-lag works in ET

There is also an explaination of the “timenudge” cvar

i think players dont like anti-lag mostly because theyre not used to it, and “normal” lag, when expected, can actually feel more normal… being used to a fairly consistent ping and then changing to a different system can be expected to be disliked, imo, especially in a game where aim is so important.

(bani) #12

the problem with antilag off is that going from server to server your ping will be different, sometimes even different round to round depending on how loaded the server gets.

with antilag, you never have to lead, ever. the game is the same regardless of what server you play on.

so with antilag, games between servers are more consistent. and arguably, even games on the same server are more consistent under load.

in a game where aim is so important, antilag is even more important – it means you are rewarded for your actual aim rather than for your prediction ability.

(Dragon) #13

Antilag ON just feels slightly different and requires a slight re-adjustment of your aim. Personally, i don’t like it that much

(ExPLiCiT) #14

unlag it far superior to antilag (don’t know the code but I have played both literally thousands of times, so I know from experience)

(xero) #15

ExPLiCiT?

I can’t put my finger on what does but I can tell if a server is using it, without checking.

It seems everything is delayed a little.

I.E. Shot a panzer almost point blank range at a wall right next to someone.

It was right before they went around a corner. But I did hit them. Or should have, or would have had anti-lag been off.
And getting shot right after you run around a corner.
Weak.

I’ve killed people AFTER they have run around a corner. AFTER. several times.

I’d like to know how many servers use it for RTCW.

Don’t know what you guys are talking about leading with anti-lag off.

I doubt you guys have even tried it. I don’t have to lead ppl anymore than with anti-lag on.

(bani) #17

antilag doesnt delag panzerfausts

only hitscan weapons are delagged. sorry.

and fwiw, everything IS delayed a little in rtcw, period. antilag or no antilag.

the difference is that when you aim at something and pull the trigger, you hit it with antilag on. with antilag off you are much less likely to hit it unless you lead the target by yourping-milliseconds.

(ExPLiCiT) #18

Well I make gen quite a bit on 6 map servers

(HellToupee) #19

the super low pingers dont like anti lag as much as it removes a great deal of their advantage, i play on 100ms ping and antilag is a god send alot of fights were sprey and prey the 50mser wins, but now if im fast enpugh u can beat them. Antilag should be a default option, only people i see wingin r the people with awsome connections and sub 50pings.

(wudan) #20

nope, antilag doesnt do a single thing to players pings. the code doesnt do anything like that.[/quote]

I understand that, but anti-lag is to smooth out the wrinkles caused by errors in traces and positioning due to network problems, and higher ping is a result of network problems.

Basically, high ping is an indication of slower client/server communications, right? So the client issues a command, and tells the server what it’s doing and the server puts the client where it thinks the client is, but if the client doesn’t “talk” for a second or two, and the server doesnt’ think the client is doing anything, but anti-lag is supposed to iron out the differences between client packets, right?
