http://ucguides.savagehelp.com/ConnectionFAQ/Quake3.htm

It’s for Q3 but most of it is still valid for ET.

yes that’s a great page. also, ET has an ISDN option which tries to give you the best settings:

cl_maxpackets 30
cl_packetdup 1
rate 5000
snaps 20

i guess if that’s not working out for you, try the 56k options:

cl_maxpackets 15
cl_packetdup 2
rate 4000
snaps 20

but many servers enforce 30 packets, so maybe try a combination:

cl_maxpackets 30
cl_packetdup 2
rate <determine your line speed with one of the many online tests, and set rate accordingly> - another thing you could do is join a server and set your rate too high (10000 or whatever), then lower it by 1000 until the bottom of the lagometer is a steady green rather than a steady yellow.
snaps 20 - many servers enforce 20-40, but i think someone mentioned that 10 can help a horrible connection? i’m not sure because i’ve never had the problem. ask on the etpro forums.

cg_lagometer 1 - turns on the connection graph to help you find problems. in a perfect world you want steady blue up top and steady green down bottom. yellow and red are bad.
