I can see the guy’s point about saving people from downloading etc, but surely he shouldn’t be making money from other people’s work, even if the authors/publishers aren’t making any from it? And all the custom maps included, surely that is a bit sly?

What you think?

(Syphilis) #2

Fairly certain that this is not legal - personally I wouldn’t pay somebody for 94 custom maps which may or may not be the version required when actually playing
but I guess if you are new to the game it is a tempting offer.

One of the screenshots on his page looks familiar …

(Ragnar_40k) #4

What is the difference to sites like FileFront, where you can buy this stuff on CD too?

(Gimpsta) #5

I guess you could argue that if you own a modem.

Good download speed = 4Kb/s
Download in one hour = 4 x 60 x 60 = 14.4Mb
250 Mb download would take 250/14.4 = 17.36 hours

Even at 1p per minute it would cost you £10.41 to download just the ET binaries.

So I guess what I’m saying is that for modem users something like this may make sense.

sorry … bored at work :skull:

(eRRoLfLyNN) #6

Didn’t know about that (Filefront I mean). It’s a bit dodgy imo anyway.

(carnage) #7

although it is ilegal to sell the maps and mods for ET by the agreement that the tools are given to us, it is not ilegal to sell his download time,

if he was running something like fileplanet where he ofered lots of files i might agree but the mappers made the maps with the intention that ppl could play them for free for fun are then cheaed out of there work

this seems very unfair when groups of ppl spen sometimes years making mods for a game then he comes along and sells there work that was intentional free

(Nail) #8

it was pulled

(EvilBaga) #9

Seriously, you guys are too uptight.

(PH@TIE) #10

As the game is free I don’t personally see the problem.

However, Splash Dammage, have not been able to reap the benefits of all their efforts, from the MP side of ET, it does seem a bit of a shame that someone unconnected to all the hard work does.

There is a flip side to the argument tho’.

For many years during my RtCW days, I played on 56k. Hard work at the best of times, especially when you tried to hit a server and were unable to connect because you were missing the correct map. Downloading maps at 3kb a second is somewhat tedious.

There is still a large community of narrow band players out there, who would greatly benefit from not having to download all the maps… Venice = 20mb nightmare on 56k.

The “Entrepreneur” could have saved a little face by adding a line to say that the payment was for his Time, Media and poastage, and not the game.

(eRRoLfLyNN) #11

But he didn’t.

And fuck you Evilbaga I am not uptight wtf do you mean man?!??! :stuck_out_tongue:

(pgh) #12

That IS the problem. :stuck_out_tongue:

All been discussed before and this was the conclusion. Regardless of what could be done the guy could simply say that hes selling his download/bandwidth time, the dvd itself and case… it just so happens that ET is on it. The same way you can buy a few guys homegrown weed and its a ‘freebie’ when you buy a t-shirt.

(BondyBoy007) #13

where is this “t-shirt” you speak of?

(Gimpsta) #14

You could try finding your nearest retail outlet here:

http://www.dea.gov/agency/domestic.htm

(BondyBoy007) #15

I’ve looked all over that map but can’t seem to find anywhere close to me, do you know if they have a mail order facility?

(PH@TIE) #16

So the advert should be.

FOR SALE!

1x Writable DVD (used). £4 inc postage and packaging.

Bonus software included Free of charge. ET multiplayer (free) + 94maps (free).

Dont get me wrong I h8 to see someone profit from anothers hard graft.
Perhaps SD, could have offered the service of a CD containing the game, to cater for the narrow banders that would be Old Age Pensioners before they ever got it downloaded. I had to rely on a m8 with BB, to keep me upto-date.

(Genesis) #17

I think SD had a choice of selling the MP-part and hope there will be more then 5 people buying it (be honest would you have bought it if it wasnt free?!)
or they could have just released it for free, that way people will “try” it and get addicted (like me)…
… They are just living the consequences (isnt spelled right, i know) now…
What they do at America’s Army is you can download or order a free (not completely sure about that) cd with the game on it, that would have prevented this…

Ah well… the price is 4pound… b happy when you sell it, and go buy a lolli-pop

(carnage) #18

well i dnt think splash damage had the coice as i remeber reading something about games needing a SP mode so the publishers can sell it,as well as the masive cost to advertise the game and produce it

i would recoment try finding a well astablished game server(s) add them to your favourites, then if they are good servers they will have a web site where you can download all the mods/map needed to play on so that gets rid of your problems

(there is a problem with the amount of maps and mods for ET as every server you join has something you need to download, it just takes to long to start a game)

(DG) #19

the bandwidth troubled can usually ask their preffered gaming mag to add something to the cover disk, downside tho is it can take 8-6 weeks before that mag is out. 3DGamers have a cd burning thing, probably it’s subcontracted and there’ll only be one or two of these cd-burning firms. this way you get about 600mb of what you want though, and can expect it in a week or so.

Kind of strange the ebay’er there has lifted a fairly recent screenshot from here/pw.com, but i think its rather more strange he’s lifed the logobanner from enemy-territory.com ?

tbh only real fault (other than ripping images) i see with that ad is he doesnt actually say it’s a free game with free community-made maps of er, variable quality. The comment about downloading at the end would most likely be taken to be with regard to the extra maps. Otherwise a bit ghey but could be useful for someone who doesnt have the bandwidth to play the damn thing anyway :suspicious:

(schmeisser) #20

Who cares? Splash Damage loses nothing, since the game is free. He’s selling a CD and download time. If it’s worth it to somebody with a crappy connection, so be it.
