An updated/improved ET on the horizon?

I’m new to this forum and catching up on ET generally… played it daily for 3+ years at whosgaming.com (now defunct)… loved the game and the people there, honestly… but I haven’t played ET for more than a year, so I’m out of touch with news and events. I want to get back into playing the best multi-player online first-person shooter EVER, commercial or free… It’s the best because it’s simply the most fun and truely requires teamwork to accomplish the various objective missions. The new games out there have better graphics, true… but ET is fun, more fun and satisfying than anything else, and if you end up with a good clan it’s the closest thing on Earth to geek heaven…

Last August the game code itself was released to the public. Now that both the engine code and game code are available, I’ve been looking around recently hoping to find a serious development team in the process of revamping, updating and improving ET (but still keeping it’s original feel - specifically, the original 2.60b final public release, sans mods… I dislike it when malicious mods/servers invade my config file and GUI)… but I digress.

I make maps. I’d love to contribute in that way, but no matter what, I want to participate somehow, even if it’s just stuffing envelopes (etc.) to help in the process of rebirthing ET and getting another updated version published (one that fully supports Linux, Windows, et. al in terms of OS, graphics and sound, etc.)

So, does anyone know of a serious ACTIVE development team? I’ve looked around and found this guy www.openterritory.co.uk who seems to be moving it along, albeit slowly, but are there others? Please let me know. I want to help move ET forward, bring it into the 21st Century so-to-speak.

I just know ETXReal and Open Wolf, one on engine the other on the rest, and some people would like to see both merged…

I just watched Open Territory Youtube videos.Also Xreal.
Well,the tress could be in fire if you use flamethower^^ like in Far Cry 2 or if you shoot trees,like support airstrike,then trees broken,like in Crysis,if you shoot tree,it goes down.
Also there should be mega explosive dynamite:D bah,like real dynamite,concole usage should be better:D

For the trees, it would require multiple models + physics, hard code in sight o.o

Dynamite, just add a manual explosion in Gtk like in Goldrush for the Bank Doors, with a blast radius x)

Well to describe the situation like it is now (i can only say from my perspective and i have not the complete overview, but i think it is good overview enough to tell).

There are like many projects out there, some died already, some are still work in progress. You can classify those projects in pure renderer projects, which there is the most promising called ETXreal, and there are those merging ETXreal and doing additional stuff (which is completely undefinied, just some stuff they feel like doing it seems), and there are projects, which can be classified as simple and reduced, just keeping ETs outer appearance, but solving major issues in a very clean and good way. Well, for the last one class of projects i have bad news. There is none. I am so sorry to say that. But renderer stuff and “merging all kinds of things” projects do not fit in this kind of class.

And sorry if it sounds a bit cynical, but i am just one of these very few persons who just wishes for themself a very simple and fundamental project, which there is (seemingly) none as i said. Maybe in future.

Anyhow yeah that was the whole point i wanted to make :stuck_out_tongue: and probably the last i am going to make on topics like this, because most projects are getting on my nerves already (did not meant to offend anyone with this, but it is my opinion).

Sorry for beeing negative.

The Clean ET project is thematically what I’ve been hoping for…

In reference to Pegazus’ link/thread, I’m reading through it now (15 pages!) and found this on the first page…

I agree. Urban Terror, despite being inferior in so many ways, does have this advantage. You can jump toward a ledge, grab onto it and pull yourself up. You don’t need a ladder brush to climb things. If you can jump up high enough to the object or protrusion or ledge, etc. you can pull yourself up. That would be a cool, cool addition to a new ET.

Speaking of Urban Terror as an example of what make ET better, there is no aim drift for snipers - you simply point and shoot. Makes them WAY too effective. Snipers can spoil a map.

Also, there is no bullet drop or weapon/cartridge ballistics… a pistol round is just as accurate and effective as a rifle ALL THE WAY across the map. Stupid.

And power-sliding and power-rebounding… c’mon, sliding UP staircases?.. Power-kicking all the way up the walls of an alley?.. C’mon…

And the lack of player classes is sad, as is, more importantly, the lack and variety of objective missions. Little teamwork is required, just grab the flag and run or plant a bomb… BOOORRR-rinnnggg…

I miss ET. Can you EVER get tired of those voice actors?! Can you EVER get tired of those explosions?! The zip-thunk of bullet impacts (not the ding and bells of some mods/sites, but the original stuff found, again, at whosgaming.com for example).

What about falling to pieces, literally, on impact?! Great stuff, makes me laugh ever time. And what about goombas?! C’mon, there’s nothing better than pulverizing your opponent. (To be fair, you can curb-stomp goomba in Urban Terror, but the game mechanics make it much harder).

About my only complaint with the original is the separation in quality/strength of the ranks… a private can unload a sten at point-blank range into a general and not kill him… I’d like to see fewer ranks, say, just one general rank, and less Superman separation of powers.

But I’m so wanting an updated ET… Please, you smart coder types, do something!

Yeah,that makes ET lovely.

The objective take,team mates pushing you into lift,where you crash,then laugh 1 hour.
ET just needs graphic update<=Xreal and rework on textures and someone who can rework limbomenu and also add how many XP you earn,you can buy weapons on that…etc:D

Well personally the HDET pack is enough for me. Just add bump-mapping! And AA, and anisotropic filtering, like NVidia Panel does :wink:

I spoke (via forum) with the guy at CleanET

…and he says he should be ready for beta testing in about 3 months (maybe sooner), at the rate he’s going.

Why don’t you (all) stop by and say hi and give him some moral support?.. and coders, of course, could offer your services.

It is Rather Confusing with too many ET Branches, ETXreal/OpenWolf/OpenTerritory

Although i Do Prefer the name “Open Territory”, since Wolfenstein/ET is a Trademark
