Americans how do you feel about this

From what I’ve glimpsed of the political situation in The States over the last few years he’s not wrong. It’s pretty messed up that it’s gotten to the point where billionaires are running just because they’re billionaires.

(PurpleNurple) #2

Bernie Sanders is the only good option but sadly he won’t win. Not enough money.

(Ghosthree3) #3

Oh he’s running? Didn’t even know, just came across the speech and thought it was more a general wake up call. I thought you guys only ever had 2 people run? Or is it just 2 people that run that have a chance.

(PurpleNurple) #4

Yeah he’s become very popular through reddit/imgur. The only way decent presidential candidates get popular these days is by going viral. A lot of us will be voting for him, but the vast majority of ignorant people still will choose between the two richest powers.

(Ghosthree3) #5

That’s too bad, if you fail to get in once can you run again? Because running when you know you can’t win seems a bit pointless…

(Nail) #6

pretty sure the Koch brothers won’t install him, they seem to be using Trump to get Hillary elected, she’s in their pocket

(Nail) #7

We’ll gladly take Bernie up here if you guys don’t want him

Welcome to America, Land of Liberty! (if you have enough money, that is)

So here is a break down of how the system works. None of this is a written rule, but it is how things have been operating.

There are two major parties, the Republicans and the Democrats. Neither party wants to split their voters between multiple candidates, so to give the best odds of winning each party only runs 1 candidate during the final election. In the year or two leading up to the election both parties do their best to pick the candidate they think will win from the people who are campaigning. This is through a series of informal votes and then one final more formal voting process.

Right now the Democrats have something like 3-5 people running for their parties nomination and the Republicans have something like 15-20 people running. These people are competing for the official nomination of their party, which means they would then face off with the other parties nomination in the national election.

And yes, if you don’t win you can run again. Trump has run previously, so has Hillary Clinton and many of the Republican candidates.

Also, generally if a party has the incumbent candidate(aka the current president) and he is able to run for another term, then that party has nobody run for the nomination because they give it to the current president automatically. Currently this is Obamas last term allowed in office, so both parties have multiple people trying to get the nomination.

Independents and third parties are more than allowed to run, but they generally don’t stand even a slight chance.

Bernie Sanders, who is in the video above, is currently campaigning for the Democratic nomination.

Very informative, thank you. That’s a lot bigger than I thought it was.

I wanted to make a joke… then I realised this was a very serious thread, so I’ll try to be as serious as I can.

Funnily enough I just had a conversation with some friends about American elections, even though I live in New Zealand. The biggest thing we all felt odd about was the fact that we couldn’t (we being America) vote for Obama again. i understand the whole “don’t let power get to their heads” thing but I still feel a little disappointed. Obama has done a lot for America (I think) and while I’m not American, and ultimately I don’t care an awful lot, I have always liked Obama.

I don’t know enough about what he’s done to say he’s been a good president, but I’ll take a guess and say he was better than Bush. I am also surprised he can’t run again though. I’m pretty sure I read up at some point about it and either some president has run for 3 terms in the past or a law was repealed saying you couldn’t.

This is how capitalism works. America chose this on their own.
Surprise, surprise it doesnt work, just like ‘we bring democracy into other countries’ doesnt work and ‘im a southern american i can be stupid and shoot black ppl in the face’ doesnt work.

I wouldnt care about america, they wont be a thing in 50 years and maybe have destroyed themselves but they still think they have to play the world police and that is what pisses me off.

Also why would american citizens vote for this guy, they all want to ‘live the american dream’, or as said once ‘This country is not full of haves and have-nots, but instead full of haves and soon-to-haves.’.

If you think America isn’t still going to be a power house in 50 years you’re insane. It might go to shit but it’s still going to be in a position of immense power.

Quotes aren’t working for some reason.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt was indeed voted as President 3 times in a row in the 30’s, and it’s because of that that our Constitution was amended so that someone can only be President twice, for a total of 8 years. They were afraid of a dynasty forming around a popular President and having them ingrained in the government until they die.

Also the US will remain a world power for a while at least(Not sure if that’s a good thing or not), and China will rise to be the other great power.
