AMD Catalyst™ 11.5b hotfix out, Got better performanse
Alrighty, tested the new drivers pretty extensively. Performance is better FPS-wise (both single and multiplayer), but now the CPU problem is back (it was mostly gone when using modded drivers), causing excessive sound stuttering at times. How could they fail atfixing that issue repeatedly? Sheesh…
But yeah - this week’s patch + 11.5b = a lot better performance for me. I’m playing at much higher settings than one week ago, although the FPS dips are still unbearable at some points. Going from 85 to 20ish in a matter of seconds is bad. I’d say they are 1/4 there.
Just as a reminder:
ATI Radeon HD4870
Core2Duo E8400 @ 3GHz
4GB RAM
Man to be honest, I think using a Dual Core with this game is a little harsh. This game barely works with a lot of video cards, the engine in this game just isn’t optimized enough to even try to do that. But then again, thats just my thoughts, and I understand that not everyone can upgrade. I totally hope they do fix that problem, so more of community can try this game!
I play with a Core 2 Duo, plays fine mostly.
Core 2 Duo E6850 3 ghz (overclocked to 3.3)
4 gig ram
ATI Radeon HD 5850 (overclocked core to 800 mhz, memory to 1175 mhz)
I have found the older ATI drivers to work better for me. These hot fixes only make things incredibly more laggy or crash prone.
I haven’t tried the latest one, am almost afraid to, after all the problems the other hotfixes have given me.
said it already in other threads. If thats really the case, I want to know what can be more cpu demanding in BRINK than it is in BFBC2 except for a bad code, console port or whatever…
its not that easy. games are complex programs. there can be one function that doesnt work properly that might cause the problem. also, pc games need to work for all sorts of different graphic cards, drivers… lots of stuff to think about, lots of stuff to implement.
right now it seems that the main source of the problem is with ati. graphic card manufacturers usually get a final build of a game before release so they can release optimized drivers. that wasnt the case or they screwed it up.
look at the witcher2. i only read about it, but this game also has some major issues with ati cards and ati is working hard to deliver hotfixes and the application profile (this is btw. an optimazation tool for all cards, not only crossfire profiles, google it or go look at guru3d.com).
my advice would be to wait till 11.6 is released. i personally will upgrade to nvidia soon i guess. this is apparently not the first time ati screwed up and i dont have the patience to wait for better drivers nor do i have the will to stay with this company. msi twin frozr gtx560 ti (maybe hawk) will it be i think…
Yes thats exactly what I said. I still cant see a reason for high CPU demand except the lack of optimisation. My question was: is there any feature im missing that would justify such a high cpu demand? (Like in BFBC2 they say its very demanding because of the destructable world. So lots of cpu needed. Is something like that the case with brink? Am i missing something?)
This “Hotfix” made everything worse.
10-17 FPS.
Seriously, this all can’t be true anymore.
And i really doubt they will fix it with 11.6 now.4 ****ing hotfix drivers and no one works for me.This can’t be true!
It’s just not funny anymore. The ****ING third week and this game is still unplayable!
this game is not even a beta version it’s ALPHA! -.-
gonna have a look at it now…
edit: no improvement here. sec tower’s outside room still drops down to 30. just like before. :(
Basically the crappy performance has just been split between 2 cards instead of on one. I wiped the old drivers off before reinstall, tried many different settings in the config and nothing changed.
I’m running i7 920 @ 3.8Ghz
x2 6970’s
6GB ram
When I wiped the old drivers off in safe mode I had an issue when installing the new ones that CCC wouldn’t open so I had to install CCC on its own for it to work, have no idea if its relevant or not.
Heres the error:

11.2 is still better in my system. These drivers have some problem when running the game in window-mode and causing BSOD, STOP: 0x00000116 “atikmdag.sys”.
Using 4870X2 / E8400 @ 3.6 Ghz
Please let me know if anyone is having the same problem.
The hotfix made the cutscenes very fluent for me. Ingame however it got worse. Way to go.
no performance boost on my System. Still 20-30 fps ingame.
Q9550 @ 3,4 ghz
Ati 6950 @ 6970
4 GB Ram
Win 7 64 Bit
I seemed to get a nice 20fps boost or so, but game was running smooth for me anyway before this version of the hotfix. Running pretty much exact Recommended Requirements (Ati 5850).
For people experiencing ‘close to desktop’ i had this from previous 11.5a hotfix versions and found out it was 1 of 2 things or a combination of both.
- Make sure you remove all previous version of your drivers before installing the latest. I was just adding the new drivers ontop of the old ones.
Here’s AMD’s suggested guide on how to remove old drivers:
http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/GPU57RemoveOldGraphicsDrivers.aspx
- Make sure you have r_usethreadedrenderer “0” as i had it set to 2 which caused massive fps fluctuations and changing it to 0 seemed to make the game more stable and smoother feeling in general. (I think it should be 0 by default but just in case you changed it like me, as ETQW it was better at 2 but not here)
I tried these drivers and it feels like no improvements still aroundt he same performance but it stutters lot more and I dont just mean the sound, its a general movmeent stutter and lag it is litterally unplayable now.
Why does this run poop but Quake 4 runs flawless?
bc2 was designed for consoles with mult-core and low end gfx card. it uses the cpu to make up for lack of quality gfx power. for example adding a quad core increses performance more than updating your gfx card.
i hope bf3 will be better but its being designed for pc and down-ported to consoles. which all games should be imo.
Yes, also Bad company2 has imense Sound engine which idealy requires its own core to run so if have 3 or more cores you see a huge increase in performance.
If you have dual core turn the quality right down for the sound an it helps a little.
I got about a 20-30 Performance boost with this patch, Is so weird how others get better FPS from different patches. I hardly drop below 100 FPS now so its good for me atleast.
Argh, the hotfix makes things better for those it was fine for anyways. That’s even worse than it not doing anything at all
