Advanced Movement: walljumping/running/ledge-grab

because jumping and shooting makes sense? ive watched kids rape across a map with soldier just jumping up and down. thats retarded. spread should be increased 100 fold when jumping
Maybe this could be added in another poll on movement. Also i would poll strafe-sprint and/or stamina bar.

I have been able to find a video about circle jump, just to make sure we are talking about the same thing. Is it this?

I would highly wish for at least this type of circle jump, since it enables the good old type of movement style with circular crosshair movement, which is so damn sexy to watch.

ETQW ramping + Brink mantling and wall hops are strangers to me, have also not been able to find videos on it. Maybe elaborate a bit more, would be great :)
Yup, that’s the type of CJ I mean. ET being the same engine had the same ground acceleration and air accel angles to allow similar increased distance by performing a good CJ.

Brink wallhops + mantling here

And here. Some people seemed to think Brink locked you into a mantle/climb animation which was completely untrue.

The start of this clip more or less hows ETQW ramping. CJ off the container, hit the steps and you rump upwards. Worth noting that ETQW didn’t have consecutive strafing like ET either.

For anyone who’s not seen it already this is SD’s position when it comes to the game’s movement mechanics :-

http://forums.warchest.com/showthread.php/35621-DB-Locomotion-Design-Motivations

In relation to strafe-jumping in particular :-

As much as we would all like to see it, they seem determined not to entertain the idea, so, as I’ve said before, we can either stamp our feet and cry about it, or suggest something else.

DarkangelUK: I want this ! The best of ETQW/Brink. This have its place in the 4th fps of SplashDamage. But the mantling is not necessary for me.

However, there is a fundamental problem with strafe jumping … It is not a move that a player can attempt to understand by simply competing against another player on a server without a full description of what is going on from an external source.

Quakelive explain it with a tutorial.

I genuinely wonder what’s happened here. Have todays PC gamers (we can’t blame dumbing down for console here, it’s a PC only game) become complete lazy bastards that they need everything handed to them on a plate, explained to them clearly and every aspect laid out in front of them and ultimately made not too confusing because their little hearts are easily offended by something complex they have to work hard to master… or is this a myth that devs have either dreamed up or mistakenly started to believe in?

(Kendle) #26

^ dunno, RTCW was my first game, ET the 2nd, not once did I ever feel like chucking it in because I couldn’t figure out (from spec’ing other players) how to do a basic strafe-jump. Really don’t understand the logic tbh, but it is what it is. :frowning:

(Erkin31) #27

Agreed with you. I don’t understand why players are considered “too stupid”, like if a too complex system will scare the majority of pc gamers.
I just bought King Of fighter XIII on steam. From the very beginning, in the tutorial, I saw how the game is complexe (more than all FPS) and… damn… I’m really happy to found a deep game like that, even if I’m totaly bad on this game.

As I understood their declaration, SD want to please to the most of people possible, with making a very classic FPS, with not surprises or deep functionalities. I don’t know how it’s could work.

(dAR3N) #28

Maybe small taps to jump left and right as like in Unreal Tournament :p?!

(DarkangelUK) #29

Somehow PC gamers started to get treated like console gamers when it was never required.

(Rex) #30

Hahah so true! But not funny at all though. :frowning:

(Mustang) #31

Assuming that strafe-jump/circle-jump isn’t possible I’d be interested to see how it plays if we could have slide, wall-jump, ramp-jump and ledge-mantle.

Don’t like the idea of wall-running at all.

Voted for combination.

(BomBaKlaK) #32

Exactly I feel the same

(1-800-NOTHING) #33

ramp jump would be interesting.

(Nail) #34

nothing wrong with jumping and shooting

(Ruben0s) #35

I also don’t see the problem of having an external source to explain trickjumps. LoL has tons of external sources so does every other moba game and people don’t seem to have problems with that.

Although Xt is going to be a PC game I guess it would be perfectly playable with a controller.

(Protekt1) #36

Those things are kinda cool. I’d like to see them, but not really in this game. The maps are just very not tuned for this type of stuff. Even shootmania had to scrap ALL of it’s pre-existing maps to add wall jump.

(k1ruaa) #37

I do not like any of the options on this poll. I would like to see strafe jumping but as we all know it’s not going to happen, well maybe something close to it like increasing speed with multiple jumps, I don’t know… even “faking” strafe jump could work.

(k1ruaa) #38

Since when a game has to be realistic? Or even make sense?

Does movement in quake make any sens? No, and it’s a monument of video games.

(Mustang) #39

Just heard this, taken completely out of context from what he was talking about, but a nice quote nonetheless.

I think Wall Kicks would work great in DB, especially if the maps were designed for them.

Truthfully, if you look at the progress on most of the maps a lot of them are near polish. If they added wall kicks or any of these new mechanics they would have to go back rebalance, add routes etc to all of these maps. Seems like a lot of work that would keeps the maps in “alpha/beta.” I’m all for it as the combat and movement is quite stale atm. I don’t believe we will see anything like this added to the game any time soon if at all though.
