ADV: Why Just Rent an ET Server -- Rent a Whole Computer!!

(Salteh) #21

Just because it’s easier to find… holes in windows than in linux doesn’t mean there are no viruses for linux :stuck_out_tongue:

RST.b,
Jac virus,
Linux.slapper.worm,
Linux.simile,
Linux.svat,
etc :o

And… the plural of virus is viruses
virii just looks silly :I

(MadJack) #22

Virii is the latin plural for Virus (because Virus is a latin word :P)

As a true *nix user i must say SCDS_reyalP used proper and correct arguements to stand with his opinion, we were talking about OS’s which are being used as a server. ( Not gaming platforms <- stay on the subject)

Both Windows and Unices are just fine for that job, but to admin a server correctly you need to know the ins and outs of that system and that’s a learning process, windows simplified this process for you with an easy to learn GUI, Unices take a whole different approach, it tends to be harder to learn, but when you finally know the system you can use its greater power to your advantages.

The advantages and disadvantages between these systems are a different discussion.

And btw its: a virus, and multiple viruses. “VX scene”

It is not viri, or (worse) virii. True the word comes directly from Latin but not all Latin words ending in -us have -i as their plural. Besides viri is the Latin word for men (plural of vir, man, the root of English virile). There is in fact no written attestation of a Latin plural of virus.

chr0nicles, using dictionnary.com huh?

Alright, on the issue of virus/virii/viri … I got that virii from way back when and I stuck with it. Now, the real latin plural for virus is viri and was rarely used because the plural for man (vir) is the same (viri). Thus, since “men” as the subject of a sentence would be used far more often than “venoms” (virus means venom) the “viri” word was most commonly seen as the plural of “man.” Where I got that

As for the *nix the first discussion was about OS, not why it’s used though you could argue that since we’re in a server renting thread. I was simply talking about my experiences with linux and that’s it.

Hmm, my $0.02 fwiw…

'nix is alot older in concept than the current model M$ uses today - *nix in general harks back to the days when equipment was quite slow and less reliable. In 1972 for example, it was deemed to be of critical importance that you organised your disk layout to take advantage of seek, read and write times on hard-disk clusters. Today that’s not such a big problem with ultra-wide scsi devices that spin @ +7600rpm. In 1972 it was far more important for a sys admin to understand to the last PID every process which ran on the server, when it ran, how much of the total machine or cluster resource it used and manage those processes in such a way as you still got maximum efficiency from your server. Today with 2Ghz + processors and generic off-the-shelf CPU’s with better reliability, it’s not so much of an issue.

The problem for business, big and small alike, was that it cost serious money (still does tbh) to employ ppl with suitable knowledge and experience to support those servers. With the demise of the term ‘Computing’ and the rise of the title ‘IT’ we can see a new breed of ‘computer specialist’, distinctly different from the hobbyist enthusiast which marked my own entry into this ‘area’. M$ (amongst other things) made it possible to have cheap networks and cheaper support. The gist of it is this - whereas in *nix you are in control - it is for you to decide how the server should run and be maintained - with Windows it’s much more a case of following simplified methods - M$ O/S’s are put together in such a way as to cater for the 'lowest common denominater - where do you think the line ‘if indoubt reboot’ came from?

Install the O/S then reboot - patch then reboot - apply service pack - reboot. Point your mouse at the checkbox (you don’t have to actually understand the open standard your actually using, nor the RFC that relates to it) - just tick the check box and reboot. That in essence is the difference.

NetBEUI - Netfooey more like
Dynamic Name Resolution (um, M$ embrace and break technology)
WINS (wtf was that all about eh?)

Ofcourse i’m using a dictionary, what would be the best source to find information about a certain word? Taken from the URL you gave us.
“The correct English plural of virus is viruses” So there you go

(MadJack) #27

English :stuck_out_tongue: Not latin  Let’s not go into that again shall we?

We’ve shuffled our test servers around. We’ve taken one down and moved the other two to different IPs. They’re now at:

66.28.23.84:27960
66.28.23.89:27960

Both are 18 man servers. They are often full, so keep trying! And post back here to let us know what you think!
