About the AI...

Bots:

Even after your claimed “improvements” to the AI, their objective logic goes as follows:

Command Post >>>>> Primary Objective

Any time I play a single player or co-op game it usually ends in me, and sometimes my friends, quitting due to our AI being more concerned with secondary objectives than primary objectives. This is a blatant issue and it’s rather surprising it has yet to be addressed. Also, there should be a way, in single player, for you as a player to have some sway on getting your team to help out, such as posting a focal point for your team. It’s more frustrating than what it’s worth to do co-op or single player due to horrible AI on your own team. The other team is always more than happy to camp out at the main objective as well, making an already bad situation worse.

Turrets:

They seem to take quite a while to lock onto their target, this is bad for rather obvious reasons… It really should be fixed as it renders turrets almost useless, even against bots.

Please, please fix these issues, else I shall send a pack of these things to ravage your offices!

I’m playing on the ps3 and for the last few hours I’ve been farming my soldier’s XP constantly, the AI has been handling the objectives perfectly fine.

It might not be the smartest AI, but I’ve not seen anything gamebreaking so far.

(Nail) #3

You are suppossed to do the Primaries, not the bots

(MarkcusD) #4

The AI is terrible. Just let us choose the mission for them.

(fearlessfox) #5

I’m not sure if I’m playing a different game here… Just did another mission where the friendly AI handled the primary perfectly while I had fun blasting stuff with my solly.

(Dormamu) #6

Same here. I was expecting to die allot, but it seams that my team is better. Even on the Be More Objective, they drew the fire away to help me complete the objectives, or to flank the enemy.

Haven’t played the update yet, but Be More Objective is such a bitch.

I get the HE charge in the first minute, then usually the repair before the 5 min. mark, but the hack is just lame. They put a turret and four bots there and there’s nothing I can do.
Oh, I forgot to mention THE AI DOESN’T DO ****.

I’ll probably get it some day, but I tried for two hours straight yesterday and I got so frustrated I wanted to break my xbox.

PS - the grenades are brilliant. They’re not supposed to kill, but stun. It’s brilliant being in a game with grenades where spam doesn’t dictate 50% of deaths.

Get an accurate gun, and pick them off one at a time from behind your bots. Your team should keep their attention as long as they are in front. When there’s an opening, make your way in to do the objective, and hope that your team moves in behind you, they don’t always, so you will have to try a few times. This works pretty much anytime you face bots. I honestly can’t tell you the last time i was beaten by bots, and I usually play on hard. (Not trying to brag, its just about understanding how the bots play, I don’t even think I’m all that good.)

Also, hiding actually works on bots, far too well. The best idea for hack objectives (the hardest ones by far) is just to go hide as long as possible, even if you only get 4 bars. Oftentimes, they wont even come shoot at you, an engi will just show up to get rid of the box.

But anyway, back to the topic at hand. After the update, has anyone noticed that the bots have an extreme tendency to huddle together? Like 6 people right in front of the objective?

This is only my experience on PS3, but I’ve mentioned it on the BethSoft forums and a few people have had similar experiences.

Friendly AI on Easy and Normal = “Objective? You mean Command Posts? Yeah, I got that!”

Friendly AI on Hard = “Objective? I did that ages ago! Oh, you mean the NEW objective - don’t worry, Wedgwood has it, and I’m providing covering fire. I’m an Engineer, silly, it needs an Operative. Stop telling me what to do and keep us alive, you’re the Medic, remember? Although I suppose Jolly will save us if you screw up.”

They aren’t up to the enemy AI’s super aimbot levels, and they don’t bother to finish downed enemies the way the enemy AI will when you’re incapacitated, but they’re willing to both complete primary objectives for their class, AND defend primaries - EVEN while there’s an available Command Post to go pay attention to. They won’t completely ignore it, a couple of guys will rush off to different side objectives, but the primary focus is always on the primary objective on Hard.

That’s the exact problem I’ve noticed. I’ve noticed that if I don’t do the objectives myself, the bots will usually ignore them in favor of the Command Posts. This is especially a problem during the “hack” objectives, the bots will almost completely ignore the objective in favor of screwing around with command posts, running around like chickens with their heads cut off, and just being utterly useless. If I want to play an entire campaign as an engineer, you’re screwed. Why? Because the bots just won’t hack most of the time.

Edit: Also, wouldn’t it be lovely if PC supported 24 players, had CTF, and had TDM and DM?

With the AI tweaks I heard in the patch I decided to test their mettle and created another character and made him a straight medic then I did what no one should do in the SP campaign, I set it to HARD. With minimal headache, a few hours later, I’ve managed to complete the entire Resistance campaign on hard, including What-Ifs, on hard mode and I never once dropped my Medic class.

I must say I don’t know what everyone is on about. I only lost on a single map, and only once, and that was on the map where you need to destroy the pillar then guide the bot then destroy the bridge and then hack the thingy, where the AI instead decided to stand in the middle of nowhere and get shot rather then hack the thingy the first time. The second attempt we ended up plowing through the enemy team after a rocky start.

I’d say that it’s a vast, vast improvement over “Herp de derp, I hug command post!” that they used to be. Sure, there’s still one or two like that but it’s better then the entire team now.

(obliviondoll) #13

Well I was stuck on the missile launch mission as Security when I was on Normal difficulty, because I couldn’t survive long enough to do the hack, and the AI wasn’t even pretending to try and help.

Switching to hard and running as a Medic for the entire match, we won a close victory.

The bot AI is so different on Hard that I no longer think of it as normal solo play. It’s teamwork.

(fearlessfox) #14

You’re just imagining it, OD. I’ve been playing on normal all day and the AI is doing a fine job of managing the OBJs for me.

(Swain) #15

Cleared both campaigns even before the patch came out.

problem, OP?

(Kiste) #16

I’m stuck on the Missile Launch mission as well. I even dropped difficulty down to EASY. No dice, I tried for hours. And it’s not me, it’s the retarded AI of my team mates who are off doing whatever the f$'k they want, just not secure the objective so it can be hacked. At some point the time runs out and that’s it.

(obliviondoll) #17

PC? PS3? XBox? Pre- or post-patch?

I’m on PS3, and I’m posting based on personal experience. I’m not saying everyone else will have the same experience I did, but on anything but Hard, MY copy of the game gives my teammates unforgivably stupid behaviour.

EDIT: I’ve seen others on the BethSoft forums with the same story, switch to Hard and it’s fine, or they never had problems, but they were on Hard from the beginning.

And replying to this:

I had the same problem on Easy and Normal. Switching to Hard got me through the mission. Try it. Friendly AI on Hard is more intelligent (again, it works for me, and I’ve seen others post similar stories, so it’s not ONLY me who’s seen this result)

(PillowTalk) #18

Command posts are pretty damned important, as they can give you the upper hand you may need to complete the primary objective. This is probably why their logic dictates they capture them before going for the primary.

(obliviondoll) #19

The problem is when all the bots rush for the CP when you’re at 80% on the primary objective and more than half the enemy team is there ready to reverse all your hard work.

And in their mad rush to get to the CP, they also forget to try and evade enemy fire, or shoot back.

Read the post I quoted right above yours. It really does help to read the posts in the thread. The issue still remains on the two lower difficulties as it seems. In particular, with the hack objectives. At least in my experience, as others who play the Operative in the campaign mode might have less issues, although the bots on your team are still just as likely to not help you out.

Edit: Anyone else notice how odd it is that on hard, your teams AI is better than on Normal and Easy? Kinda… Backwards isn’t it?
