A serious problem with my servers.

(k) #1

Hey…
I think it’s important to mention before I start that this problem happened when the server was installed on another box aswell… So I believe we are talking about a server configuration problem or something of that kind.

Anyway, to the prob:
People who join the server get stuck after like 1 or 2 minutes.
It doesn’t say connection interrupted or anything like that and it is like your client is ok but the server just isn’t responding…

After you quit the server it is if it crushed and it is not possible to refresh or re-enter the server for like 10 minutes. After like 10 minutes it is if the server is back and you can refresh and join it but the same thing just happens all over again…

After you get stuck in 1 server, the affect it has which I’ve mentioned above is in all of the servers on the box…

What should I do\check?
Has anyone ever came across this problem?

Please help me

Thanks in advance.

It would be nice if you put some information about your server so that people can help you debug your current problem because “I’m having a problem, its something, i dont know what or when” simply doesnt work

You need to include the following:

What OS “Operating System” are you using? “Windows/Linux/BSD etc”
Server Specifications “Memory/CPU etc”
Game specifications "What version is it/What mod is running +version etc?

Best regards

k, I’ll edit my post today with the stuff you asked about, thanks

(k) #4

k, the details:
OS: Linux
Distro = Debian
Kernel = 2.4.19rc5aa1 (2.4.19 patched with rc5aa1)
CPU: XP 2400+
Memory: 512DDR 400mhz

Running ETpro 3.0.1 + Clanbase & rtcw.no clanwar config…
Anything else? :???:

Please help me

Since you’re running debian, my first suggestion is upgrade your kernel to the latest 2.6 version. A lot of people running debian and where having problems solved it by upgrading their kernel to the latest 2.6 versions .

Best regards.

Hmm, the server admin told me that this kernel is a good one for game servers… Dunno…
Can tou think of anything else?

And another question - If I wanna try running a windows server, which OS is recommended?

(chr0nicles) #7

Alright its not your server, the fact on debian is it uses old versions for almost about everything, stable but old  you can ofcourse simply use the newer versions but it depends on the admins choice  no i don’t have other solutions since these were simply the best and easiest and less time consuming, i’ve spoken with atleast 8people who where having problems with debian and all fixed their issues with updating their system to the latest kernel and system libraries.

You could mail me your server configurations (server.cfg) so i can check that if its because of misconfiguration.

I doubt the kernel version is causing these problems, I’m running 2.4.24 for over an half a year now without any problem. Incorrect system libraries on the other hand can be a big problem. What error messages are logged ? This could also be a PB issue, have you tried running the server without the use of PB?

(chr0nicles) #9

I never said it was because of the kernel, i just said upgrade to the latest kernel versions ( it wall also update required libraries ) and on debian it was really the iesiest way to fix, like i said a lot of people
where having these problems and they all fixed it after a week searching for it by upgrading to a new kernel, and you are running 2.4.24 which is a lot newer then 2.4.19  and i doubt its an PB issue.

I really don’t think you should be running windows on your server, but if you want you will do just fine with
2000/2003 server, i suggest you read some books on applying security for windows. Make sure you installed the latest patches before connecting it to the internet. ( you wouldn’t want to get infected by a nasty worm while still installing the system)

Well, I’ve notice most of you recommending a kernel upgrade, I doubt it’s the solution but I’m willing to try it out.

My current kernel is tweaked and working perfectly with any other games (CS,Q3,CoD,UT99,UT2004,BF1942,etc…)
The ONLY problem I’ve seen with that kernel is ET.
I must say the kernel is VERY stable and working smooth and I don’t really feel well about changing that.

About the libs… maybe you happen to know what libs exactly do I need to upgrade, it might help.

Also the PB thing, I didn’t try disabling it, sounds logic, I’ll try that and post my results here.

Thanks in advnace,
LR.

Well the kernel itself is not the problem, i guess glibc might be the problem, but the fastest way to solve is upgrade to the new kernel branch 2.6.X since you will be required to update your entire system. Debian is known to use older versions for almost everything, and lots of users are having problems by this design.

further more debugging this problem without any error msg is kinda difficult

btw mail me your server.cfg

MY system is not that old… I turned it unstable and at unstable mode it’s kinda up to date.

Just wondering on how things turned out, did you fixed the problem?
