A question about advertisments?! Devs or comm manager?!

As I have read, in-game advertising is looking like it is going to be an integral part of ETQW for purposes of providing a higher level of support, granted Activision will still make money above and beyond that support with Need for Speed Carbon raking in 5 million in the first quarter from advertising.

I do not want advertisments downloading to my computer while I am actively playing the game, personally I do want them at all because I class them the same as spam mail, however if we must be subjected to them I would just like to know how they will be implemented and when they will download.

My concern is this, will the advertisments be set to download at any given time or will they be set to download while a player is connecting to the game and inbetween maps loads?

Neither, the adverts will be implemented to the maps, eg, on the side of a truck or a half blown up billboard, they are designed to look as if they’re supposed to be there, not like a pop-up you get in a web browser.

That’s where they will be displayed, but they will still have to be downloaded at some point…

at first i was worried about the adverts but the more i think about it i dont think we will really notice them and the extra money to help the game along with updates and keep it supported by the devs for longer sounds like a good thing to me.

Actually Dazzamac the placeholders will be implemented into the maps as the advertisments will change, it won’t be an unchanging graphic imbedded into the map.

I think all some of you missed my point and question completely, what I was asking is how it would be implemented meaning will the ads be downloaded to me during game play or will they be downloaded upon game start and while I am connecting to the server and inbetween maps.

I perfectly understand that they will not be like popups as I have seen how they appear in BF2142, I just want to know when they will be downloading to my computer, this makes a very specific difference in bandwidth usage as to when the actual download happens.

Lets take for instance Albatross18 Golf, all advertisments are downloaded upon game start, nothing is downloaded during gameplay which eliminates the possibility of in game lag because all updates are done before you get into the server.

This question is directed more so at the developers or commnunity liason if there is one, and the answer to this question will make a very big difference as to whether or not I will purchase this game.

My only concern with them is how well will they blend into the map, I can’t see any other issue arising from them apart from that.

I was going to reply to spoofeh earlier but didn’t, following other bitchslaps I reckon I should. I am well aware that there will only be placeholders put in the map. The way they’ll get on the map I would guess to be one of two ways, downloaded during map load, or more likely, updated with any automatic game update. Most games have them these days so I assume QW will have the auto update implemented. But I’m speculating (and rambling) so an official answer will explain all more clearly :slight_smile:

I think the OP is maybe concerned about being in a match or scrim and you’re about to tripple headshot the engie building the emp with 2 seconds to go till your respawn and… (starts downloading new advertisement)… llllaaaaaaaggggggggg… they build the emp, you lose first phase AND you have missed the /kill for respawn.

I could be wrong though :stuck_out_tongue:

First of all I assume that the adds would be downloaded upon game start, like it currently is with W:ET when connecting to a server and downloading the necessary assets from that particular server ( custom sound files / texture files etc.)

Secondly, even if the adds are downloaded during gameplay you probably won’t notice it as the current placeholders for the sewer map are only 86 Kb and 11Kb in file size… They are in the pak1 file: generated/dds/textures/massive/

However, If they ‘refresh’ the add image with another one every minute, or use a complicated/fps eating shader ( wich I personally doubt) It becomes an other story…
