A problem with LAN ET servers.

(k) #1

Hello folks,
I got some sort of problem with LAN, ET servers (win/linux).
A while ago, I took part at a local LAN event which hosted CS and ET aswell.
CS had no problems but the ET servers just weren’t working right.
The same servers worked ONLINE, on the internet few hours before (and after the event worked aswell, online).
But at the event itself, the servers kept crashing (ETpro 3.01, Clanwar.config, PB enabled\disabled).
The servers we used at first were on LINUX, Debian woody 3.01, kernel 2.4.19rc5aa1.They simply got stuck!
It worked for a few minutes and then just got stuck, without any errors/notices, ANYTHING!
after realizing it’s not going to work we decided to try running the same ET version on WINXP SP1 and the same exact thing happened again.

To the questions:

  1. Any idea why did the servers get stuck offline, concidering the fact that they have been working online before and after the event?
  2. Could it be because we didn’t have Internet connection there?

Thanks in advnace.

so you didn’t have access to the internet at the place where the lan was hosted and you’re asking why you couldn’t see the servers on the online server browser?

(Nail) #3

nope, I think he was asking why his servers crashed under lan conditions when they had been working fine as internet servers

(Shaderman) #4

Did you change the dedicated cvar?

(k) #5

Fusen - No.
Nail - Right.
Shaderman - Yes.

:disgust:

(Nail) #6

did you turn off redirects if you had them running on the internet servers?

(k) #7

Can you please explain more about the redirects thing? I didn’t really understand what you meant by that…

Thanks again.

(Nail) #8

if you had http redirects set for downloads it might bork your lan settings

PB will have issues if you lack Internet connectivity (especially if you don’t have any DNS servers to immediately tell it to go away.)
ET servers will have issues when sending heartbeats if you lack Internet connectivity (you can pretty much avoid this with +set dedicated 1 instead of +set dedicated 2.)
ET clients will have issues when checking for updates if you lack Internet connectivity (you can avoid this by running the client with +set cl_autoupdate 0 or by changing it in the console, should you get it to start.)

(Lagger) #10

in fact, everyone should set cl_autoupdate 0, since the autoupdate feature isn’t used/working.The client will hang for a long time if the dns lookup fails. this applies to punkbuster too.

yeah I’ve experienced that a few times when my internet conenction goes down and I want to trickjump on a self hosted game… it just sticks to the gray screen for 10 seconds till I press escape then it finally gets to the menu…

“you can pretty much avoid this with +set dedicated 1 instead of +set dedicated 2”

We’ve tried that and the problem still occured.

About the redirects thing:
How do you enable/disable redirects?

Thanks again.

(Nail) #13

This is disabled

set sv_allowDownload “0” // global toggle for both legacy download and web download
set sv_wwwDownload “0” // toggle to enable web download
set sv_wwwBaseURL “” // base URL for redirection
set sv_wwwDlDisconnected “0” // tell clients to perform their downloads while disconnected from the server
set sv_wwwFallbackURL “” // URL to send to if an http/ftp fails or is refused client side

(k) #14

What are the defualt redirects for Internet gaming?

Doesn’t +set dedicated 2 disable it all? If not, what is it good for?

(KingJackaL) #15

+set dedicated 2 makes the server an Internet server.

+set dedicated:

0 - listen server/client
1 - LAN server ( doesn’t send heartbeats, assumes no internet conn basically )
2 - Internet server ( advertises itself, assumes internet conn available )

So most servers online will be using 2. LAN servers will be using 1.

(k) #16

That’s exactly my point…
If I set +set dedicated 1, why do i need the following vars?
set sv_allowDownload “0” // global toggle for both legacy download and web download
set sv_wwwDownload “0” // toggle to enable web download
set sv_wwwBaseURL “” // base URL for redirection
set sv_wwwDlDisconnected “0” // tell clients to perform their downloads while disconnected from the server
set sv_wwwFallbackURL “” // URL to send to if an http/ftp fails or is refused client side

Won’t dedicated 1 set those to the needed mode for offline gaming?

(Nail) #17

no, if your server cfg was setup for downloads as an internet server, just changing to set dedicated 1 won’t undo those other sets

but it may not have been the prob, was just an idea

(k) #18

So can you guys please summerize the things I need in order to arrange a LAN party?
What do I need to have, what do I need to configure? And so on…
I would really appreciate it if someone could upload a full Server.cfg file compatible for LAN and Clanwar settings by CB.

Thanks a lot in advance (again).

Please? :frowning:

maybe this etpro server guide would get you going, but you’re still going to have to read it and modify.

Server configs are big messy complicated things because setting up a server can be a big messy complicated task.
