A feature I would like to see.

(Kaliber) #1

First let me say this game rocks and I appreciate all the work you guys have done to it.

Second I’m sorry if this topic has already been discussed I did a search for it and couldn’t find it, but I would like to see the ability to look left and right 45 degrees while laying prone using the lean left and right buttons. I think this would add a whole new depth to awareness and be more realistic.

(Ifurita) #2

Some reason they might have removed this deliberately was to prevent you from seeing that 1) an enemy CO was stealing your uniform and 2) an enemy engineer was planting a mine on your corpse.

Ifurita: Kaliber was talking about being prone, maybe with an MG42 or a Sniper or somthing, not about being dead, waiting for a medic

What I’d like to see is the ability to turn clockwise/counterclockwise while beeing proned with a set up MG-42. If I’m a MG-42 and see enemies approaching slightly out of my field of fire I have to pull back the bipod, turn and set up the bipod again.

oops. my bad. apologies

I think the idea is that by setting up the bipod and going prone you are creating a stable firing position with greater accuracy. The penalty is less flexibility in your field of fire.

An argument could be made that you just have to lift the weapon a little to shift the bipod but this is not necessarily true. The ammo belt needs to be laid out properly so it takes a little extra time to shift the field of fire more than a few degrees.

In short, I think the mobility/field of fire of the deployed MG42 is fair as is. If you want to mimic the notion of resetting the bipod position - leave the bipod deployed, shift to crouched position, alter your field of fire as desired, drop back to prone and let loose your firey death on the enemy!

than it strikes me as extremely odd that I’m able to crawl around with the bipod set up  I mean, if i can crawn with the MG ready to fire why cant I turn left ore right ? Makes no sense

You cant. To go crouch you have to pull back the bipod so it would take even longer this way to change the direction I’m aiming at.

Your right, just becuase someone has bipods down dosnt mean he is glued to the ground. But! this adds to the balance.

there was a quake3 mod which had a very nice approach to this very problem. you had to move a tank turret. what would happen is you had a limited range of motion, but within that range you could aim very fast (basically, instantly like it is now in ET). if you moved your crosshair outside the range, the turret would slowly rotate to the new position. it worked very well and was very intuitive.

i think this technique could be applied to the prone ET mg42.

now can someone tell me how stable this mg42 should possibly be?

I think this is due to this MG-bug currently, which also enables an MG while not in prone-mode.
I like it that sometimes it will refuse to set up your Pod, and i hope they can mamke this work perfect all the time.

On the subject of this post : I think the intial poster made a very good point : As you would be able to look left right (prolly using the use-key and left/right) you would be more aware of your surroundings
As long as setting up the bipod still requires some time, it would not make the guy alot more powerful, but would add to the field-awareness imo.

i just love to walk/run from the behind of enemy soldier with MG and drop down a grenade… then walk away… BOOOM!

funny that most likelly the soldier hears the grenade hitting the ground but i am yet to see one that on that clue would stand up and run

I will admit relative ignorance on the subtleties of using the MG42. So I just did a little test and… confirmed your points! Perhaps the MG42 soldier should be allowed to crawl outside the fire arc to shift his fire. It would then require an interruption of his fire (since you cannot fire while crawling), but would allow a small shift with a small but reasonable delay.

I suppose it would make sense to enable the MG42 user to ‘look around’ while leaving the weapon deployed. Since the alt-fire is for deploying the bipod something else would have to key this option though. Perhaps since the shift key is useless when prone it can be used to ‘detach’ the player view form the weapon to look around. I dunno - just a thought.

Actually I did only heard it once. With that gun firing, it’s pretty much all you hear (the gun).

ok ok we get the message  :stuck_out_tongue:

yeah it doesnt make much sense how limited the view is, anybody IRL could simply & quickly turn his head (or stand/jump away) and leave the gun where it is… so being able to use lean to see around - but not affect the limited manouverability of the MG42, so v little balance affect - would work well i think; tho I also like Bani’s idea
