A 40% reduction in players for August vs July. Cause for concern?

These stats don’t look good…and with other FPS games and updates coming over the next 6 months, Im thinking Splash Damage may have a problem here. I imagine Overwatch will put another dent in the player base.

But why do you think there’s been such a drop lately? I decided to look up the steam charts because I was noticing how much less populated servers there were for a Saturday night.

I personally don’t trust Blizzard to make an actual skillful and, for me, fun game (STARCRAFT DOESN’T COUNT) but… all the stuff they made recently is just casual as hell so… Their last game I liked was Frozen Throne and we all know how old that is…

So I’m pretty adamant about my opinion on them.

Overwatch is going to be very casual, there’ll be a competitive side to it but it won’t have anything on DB. It’s going to be a game I play if a friend wants to play it and doesn’t play DB.

Pretty much every game loses a lot of players after the initial release hype, nothing unusual here.

(N8o) #5

It really doesn’t concern me at all. Overwatch wont put that much of a dent into the player base at all. The two games are completely different.
Well have to also consider that school just started up for a lot of people.
Also, I think we have a stupid amount of these threads already.
The game is fine, it’s not dying. Sure, the player base is dropping, but it’s going to be fine.

My problem with Splash Damage and Dirty Bomb is how slow development has moved since the game was first available for play. I mean there are videos and reviews I see which make it apparent the game hasn’t move a great much in 2 years.

Granted SD is a small developer…but 5 maps and 2 game modes get stale, and Ive only been with the game for less than 6 months. The game has so much potential…but I cannot see myself sticking around without more content.

Having to deal with cheaters, poor anti-cheat, tedious reporting of hackers, lack of transparency from Nexon, slow development, and not enough content…I can see why the player pool is shrinking. I really enjoy the game and its mechanics…but I can definitely see myself leaving the game for a new shooter like Overwatch…or something else Steam might recommend in their ads.

I used to really dislike arcadey fast paced shooters. I always steered towards army games like COD, BF, and even Warface when I went the Free2Play route. I found Dirty Bomb because I just needed a good class-based team shooter to play. I thought I would hate the game but was pleasantly surprised. Im glad I was open minded enough to try it.

The thing is, there are a lot of players like me who just enjoy a good class based game built around teamwork. To say Overwatch wouldnt grab away some DB player is to ignore all the FPS players out there who love team work and class based games built on people playing their role and doing their part.

Im only saying all this because we’ve seen what’s happened in the past to Splash Damage’s less popular shooters. Id rather not see DB die the way another shooter did, that won’t be named.

Oh, but Overwatch won’t be on Steam, silly.

These drops are mostly due to the problems with the anti-cheat I feel, these players simply do not have the patience to wait a couple weeks for some fixes and if they are that impatient then they were likely not going to be long-term players in the first place.

Lack of content should be expected from a game in open beta, and is actually going to be resolved very soon(New merc on the way and some maps in the works) which are the major concerns for new players is that they get bored easily of what is available to them.

This game is dipping low now, but very soon we’ll see a boom again when new things are added and fixed in the next few days.

Why do people get so drawn into numbers? Player counts peak and drop all the time. Summer is coming to an end and people are going back to school/college/university of course the player count will drop. Right now there is only one game out there like dirty bomb and that’s team fortress (similar are design and game play mechanics) and the player base for team fortress took a while to get to the dizzying heights it’s at now and so did counter strike. Dirty bomb is a solid game with a constant flow of updates and its still in beta for crying out loud. Tbh I haven’t noticed a lack of servers and this game had a big enough community to keep it afloat for many years and everyday new people join and try the game out, some stay and some leave, thats how gaming works. If you’re solely interested in numbers then look when it’s out of beta.

CS:GO was dying until it didn’t…and then it exploded due to dev support. I play Dirty Bomb because I enjoy it. I don’t stop enjoying it because a few fewer or a few more people are playing it month to month based on currently release/advertising strategy.

And TBH we don’t need this thread again. I won’t close it for now as there are a couple of pretty good responses in it and this thread is only about the recent number that preceeds the spike in playerbase caused by a lot of advertising via YT and Twitch players and the emails sent out to Nexon accounts. But even then you’re still going to have lower retention over time as those players who sort of play everything for a while leave.

Overwatch and DB don’t really fall in to the same category.

(Yes) #13

Team and objective based FPS with unique playable characters that have their own unique abilities.

Yeah, totally not the same category.

TF2 fits into it, but noone is making threads about “TF Fucking 2 Kills Teh Dirty Bomb!!!11”

Because TF2 is already out. Once Overwatch is out, there won’t be any of these threads because they will finally be proven wrong.

(RyePanda) #17

As long as it gets another big advertising run at release I see no issue. The game will regain popularity with another burst of advertisement especially if NGS is good by then.

(Amerika) #18

If they fill out the game with more features that help keep the game rolling (private servers will be huge), keep up support with new content over time and give people a reason to keep playing while never crossing the P2W line there is no reason DB won’t be a staple game for a long time to come.

(watsyurdeal) #19

I think if anything it’s a wake-up call for splash damage.

There’s a lot of work to be done on subtle things in Dirty Bomb, like tweaking the gun fight mechanics a bit to be more consistent, changing maps to not be so one sided for defense, fixing certain mercs and various other things.

(N8o) #20

[/quote]

It’s really not the same category. At all. Dirty Bomb will be:
A) Much more fast paced
B) Not based around abilities as much as Overwatch currently is from what we have seen.
C) Less like a moba and more like an FPS

Also, Overwatch is based a lot more around kills than DB currently is. The more kills, the more abilities you will use.
The very essence of the two games are completely different. Just because they share a few aspects doesn’t mean they are even close to similar.

Take this gameplay and watch it.
