85 or 76 FPS?

Should I use 85 or 76 FPS?

I can cap it at 85 fairly smoothly, without r_swapinterval–my monitor’s refresh rate cannot display more than 85 anyway–but would it be better to use 76?

The pro about 85 is more FPS–smoother gameplay–while 76 supposedly has it’s uses, as we’ve all come to accept.

A third alternative: If I set r_swapinterval 1, with com_maxfps 76 and r_displayrefresh 85; is that in reality the same as com_maxfps 85, as it’s using vertical sync. Is this dumb, clever or does it make any sense at all?

If you play mostly on etpro servers (with fixedphysics 1) and aren’t overly concerned with ultimate trickjumping performance, there should be any need to cap at 76, and capping at your monitor refresh rate would be a logical choice.

If your maxfps is lower than your displayrefresh, and you hav swapinterval 1, you will get more variation in your frame rate (as it will always wait for a refresh, but still try to hold the lower number) I suspect this won’t give you quite as good jumping performance as capping without swapinterval 1.

That’s what I suspected. Thanks for the feedback.

i wish i could get the anti-tearing benefits of r_swapinterval 1, without the “halving” effect when frames go below a certain threshold.

in other words if my monitor is 85, and swapinterval is on, but my frames drop to say 60, i’d like for it not to begin capping at ~43, but rather just let me have those 60 frames.

I wish I knew what you guys were talking about !

Uh… I do.
