64-bit port of Enemy Territory?

(Algol) #1

Even though winXP-64 will be some time yet, there are lots of linux distributions already running native 64. Any chance that there will be an official 64-bit version of Enemy Territory for linux? And if so, when?

If not, is the released source possible to compile for 64-bit with gcc, or does it require any unavailable libs?

Can’t you still use 32bit apps on 64bit OS’s? That was the impression I got.
If that’s true there’s no need to bump et up to 64bit.

I should think a Mac port would be done first.

given that they haven’t done a patch to fix some pretty serious bugs, I would be very surprised if there was a new port.

Since only the game code (not the engine code) is available, it would not be possible to compile your own 64 bit version. The engine (only available as a 32 bit binary) has to link with the game code, and a thunk layer would almost certainly destroy any advantage of 64 bit game code (not to mention being a royal pain in the ass to write).

Even if you could, it would likely not be very useful. 32 bit apps will still run under the 64 bit OSes, and ET doesn’t do a lot that would benefit from 64 bit.

et would likely be slower as full 64bit.

I have a 64-bit system…the game runs alot slower…and I get booted from games that use Punkbuster after like 2 mins…I think if punkbuster would up it to 64-bit then the game would run fine…

(bani) #7

theres no way to up pb to 64-bit without upping the rest of et to 64-bit as well.

(jarppa) #8

Hello, is this still the case? Cannot host ET server on 64-bit linux?

(ParanoiD) #9

Tought ET had problems with 64 bit yeah, old topic btw. For other ppl, ET is too old to make an 64 buit version, coem on, you didnt even pay for it so SD would never bring out one, you need to make it yourself or use 3th party, but i dont think it will be done.

(bani) #10

yes, you can. you have been able to host ET servers on 64-bit linux since day one. i do it all the time.

From what I heard, there’s is no proper 64bit winxp and there won’t be. I keep hearing about how buggy 64bit release of winxp is. vista is said to offer full 64bit. You can use 64bit linux if you want, however.

Oh, and there’s no 32bit punkbuster, last time I checked.

(Black_Forky) #13

Err? :suspicious:
I imagine that the .DLLs (and .SOs?) are compiled for 32bit operating systems?

(Nail) #14

that’s the way I see it, but I think he meant 64bit
