you know they had clans testing it extensively already, as well as SD id and Activision
50,000 to 60,000 Beta Release In Mid April On File Planet
If thats true then why even have a beta? and why do user’s have to go to FP to pay for a subscription just to download a beta of Quake Wars. That’s just a BIG ASS RIP OFF to all the end users that want to support Quake Wars in may opinion. :bash:
Sorry, but IMHO only a “MORON” would pay to beta test a program for a developer. hehehe The developers should be the one’s that PAY US to beta test their software or give it to the public to beta test for FREE!!! Not To Buy Subscriptions To A Website Just To Download A Beta Version Of A Program That May Or May Not Work Properly. DOH!!! :bash:[/quote]
Fucking right! I’m pissed to hear about this news.
To test things like the login servers, and servers in general over a much larger scale in conditions more approaching what they’ll be like when the game is released. Imagine if the in-game browser only showed the first 20 servers, because that’s all we’d ever had up in testing, or if the login/stats server keeled over under the load of more than a hundred people playing the game at once.
and why do user’s have to go to FP to pay for a subscription just to download a beta of Quake Wars.
Because fileplanet are hosting the beta files. I don’t know if subscribing to FP even guarantees you a place on the beta, to be honest. If you’re not already a subscriber, it’s entirely reasonable to consider whether it’s worth the subscription fee just to beta test one game.
Bit Torrent technology has been out for a while, why not use it? You don’t need servers to host files anymore. I see a backwards marketing plan in action here. What does FP, subscriptions, or any of this crap have to do with beta testing this game? This is bad news IMO.
Before people get all bent out of shape & up in arms about paying for a beta, where does it say in the article that this limited public beta will be coming to Fileplanet only?
To quote the article:
For gamers dying to check out Quake Wars themselves, the good news is that a limited public beta (maybe 50,000-60,000 people) is scheduled to come to Fileplanet in mid-April.
Of course GameSpy’s going to plug FilePlanet; they’re under the same ownership. Last time I checked, there were numerous game file hosting sites out there (FileShack, FileCloud, & Gamershell to name three), & IIRC, any time a beta of a game this big has been released in the past, it’s not been exclusive to one site only…
clearly there is more to it than what the average joe sees.
Whether Activision are getting a cut of the revenue made from new subscribers or whether fileplanet paid an outright sum to be able to be the main guys surrounding the beta, or maybe it was a “if we host the beta, we’ll give you X amount of free publicity”.
There is obviously some motivation for both parties (atvi and fileplanet) to team up this way and so there is a purpose behind it.
But seeing as it is in id,acitivision’s interest to get “up to 50k” beta testers so they can actually fully stress test their set up, who knows if it will actually be limited to subscriptions only?
I know in the past I’ve signed up to the IGN network before with a free account and managed to get beta keys
if you look at what IGN actually offer; http://corp.ign.com/solutions.html
you can see why activision teamed up with them
Last time i heard,
gamespy had a crappy server browser they never fixed.
Yeah I really hope that ETQW is using its own account servers etc. The BF2 ingame serverbrowser “Powered by GameSpy” is still acting wierd. So its “never fixed”.
-
Why is the beta limited in the first place ? It’s not going to be any juicier than a demo will be, right ?
-
I suppose there will be no NDA’s, because you can’t hope to keep 50 000 people quiet. Is this true ?
-
Will it be OK from legal point of view to post gameplay videos on Youtube and other sites ?
you are confusing a beta and demo. the purpose of the beta is to stress test the server systems. the demo (if ever) will be to try and draw players to buy the game. therefore it would be stupid to release the beta as a demo to then find that the server systems buckled under the strain
also i expect that there wont be any means to keep 50000 people quiet but i would think the beta will just include one map like valley so there wont realy be much new to talk about that hasn’t already been reviewd

Sorry but I have to disagree with you Wils! The is no way Im gonna pay for a subscription just to help a software developer test their software. That’s LOONEY TUNES!! Would you want to have to pay to test drive a car or truck at the dealership? I dont think so. If a software developer wants to test their software thats great! But RIP OFF the very user that wants to support your software by having the user goto a website to have to pay for a subscription just to download and beta test your software. THATS JUST WRONG!! . C’mon Let the beta be an open beta so everyone can test it. Your user’s will thank you for it, your company will look good in the eyes of the end user and You will win in the long run I guarantee it!
Ahem. When you subscribe on FilePlanet, you pay for using high-bandwidth servers without any wait limit. As an extra, FilePlanet gives users the chance to try certain games out before others do.
It’s not the other way around. Subscribing does increase your chance of getting to play the demo, but it does not entitle you to get the demo. So what they are doing is not illegal in any way, you are not paying for the demo but MAY get it because you were lucky.
The only thing you could say is that they are marketing an bonus benefit as primary reason to subscribe, which is (partially) untrue seeing how you will still need to be selected. So all smart kids who subscribed just to play the demo shouldn’t cry when they don’t get the demo. Rather user your extra server bandwidth usefully and download some demo’s from other games.

I never said anything about weather it’s illegal or not I could care less. So I dont why your coming out of left field with that statement.
IMHO there is no way im going PAY ANYBODY to help any software developer help beta test any software thats just wrong!! … PERIOD!!!
as far as downloading demos most of the demos I downloaded most of them from the software developers website for FREE!!
IE: The following games downloaded demos free:
Halo, Ut2004, Tribes2, Tribes Vengeance, Battlefield 2, Battlefield 2142 and lots of others. Point Being… Why Pay for somthing when you can get it for FREE! POINT MADE!!!
basically if you paid a year pass at an amusement park, just so you can get on your favorite ride, but that ride is inaccessable (you are too tall? you are too short? you aren’t old enough? Young enough? Ride is broken down? etc). There are still other attractions out there. It isn’t the end of the world if you pay for fileplanet.
The annual pass lets you get into the park, not get on that ride.
Subscription to fileplanet lets you download their stuff faster, not let you play quake wars earlier. I just so happens that quake wars public beta will be one of their downloads.

first, it isn’t a demo, it’s a server test beta
second, File planet also has free downloads
third, I’m sure if you hosted the 50-60,000 downloads on your server, they’d be happy to let you play the beta
fourth, IT AIN’T A DEMO
I see, so FilePlanet is really more like an online Disneyland.
That has very little to do with them getting over 50,000 Beta keys to distribute. Did they pay for all those keys? Are we not allowed to know about the transaction? A lot of people are wondering, why doesn’t my new Quake Wars fan site get 1,000’s of keys to hand out so I can get people to come to my site instead?
Splash Damage is well known for helping out the “gaming community” not just the businesses that leech money from us.

DOH!! YOU THINK? ROFLMFAO :bash:
My point: then don’t pay, I’m not falling for their hype either. Just don’t make a fuss about the fact you aren’t. Rather send them a nice mail about their marketing strategy.
