24-32 player servers? Must be a bad ass machine! SMP?

I’m wondering, Doom3 requires a shit load of CPU power to run a dedicated server with decent performance. Doom3 and Quake4 has the SMP toggle switch but it doesn’t really support SMP, will ET-QW support SMP? Seems like a waste of my server if I can’t use both CPUs for a game server. Correct me if I’m wrong, but ET-QW is using the Doom3 engine? Can Splashdamage make SMP work now?

What kind of beast must you have for your server to handle the load of a 24-32 player game? I’m not talking about internet bandwidth that’s a different story, I’m just talking about plain brute CPU power and kind system specs to beable to hande that kind of load.

  1. Doom3 used per-poly hit detection, ET:QW will not
  2. Doom3 used peer2peer (or so they say) network code. It’s already confirmed ET:QW has different network code.

My guess is that ET:QW won’t be all that CPU-hungry, after all there’s no need to render graphics on dedicated server.

During development they dropped the idea.
