15 learning tutorial .maps/.pk3's

(EB) #1

NOT FOR SERVERS
Example .pk3’s with .maps included. There is one for the “first room” which includes a readme.txt with general instructions for the 1st room.
Another is the “first room extended with several doors and different lighting”.
The third is the same one I made from before (beginner.map) but touched up to match the look of the other two. They all have .ARENA files as so they are loadable in-game.
–I have more 'in progress.
–Anyways, I have targeted prints that explain the details in-game for each entity setup.
The explanation stations are easily noticed by waving neon cylinders of light. (shown in pic below)

#1 - 1st_room.pk3 // first room with readme.txt file explaining most of the steps.
#2 - 1st_room_lights_doors.pk3 // extended the 1st map with rooms, doors & lights.
#3 - after_beginner_tutorial.pk3 // 4 rooms with different uses of different entities
#4 - func_map.pk3 // more of an explanation and uses of targetnamed entities and their use together
#5 - textures_common.pk3 // Almost all of the shaders of the common textures directory lined up for reference.
#6 - brush_manipulation.pk3 // Learn to shape different objects in radiant, this explains ways that the beginning mapper can learn to use. Make maps that don’t look so ‘square and artificial’ after you learn from this. (There will be an advanced level for B_M.)
#7 - texture_manipulation.pk3 // Learn to move and size textures in radiant. Make maps that don’t look so ‘Tiled and blah’ after you learn from this.
#8 - models_101.pk3 // Learn how to make sure models show in radiant along with extra features for their manipulation.
#9 - construct.pk3 // Learn a simple to moderately complex construction sequence [*Edit: sept 05 (removed extra scripting that may confuse some)]
#10 - info_limbo_cameras.pk3 // Learn how to setup the information portion at the bottom of the limbo screen
#11 - spawn_exchange.pk3 // Learn how to setup a flag controlled spawn point
#12 - obj_101.pk3 // Learn to make returnable objectives
#13 - Tris_FPS_Vis.pk3 // The readme file should be read prior to it’s use as a tutorial.<<This one will most likely get a facelift once I have more time to devote to it.[/color]
#14 - using_paths.pk3 // Utilizing PATH entities
#15 - triple_construct.pk3 // Learn Multi-Stage Constructions

They can be found Here

-Cheers

My compliments EB real nice mapbox it will improve a lot of people’s mapping skillz

(EB) #3

Thanks buddy, I just hope that I didn’t take the entity settings levels too far for a -natural- beginner level. If I did, I will re-adjust them.
Showing curious and various uses of most things is going to be the main approach beyond explaining each item’s set use…You’ll see what I mean as I release each one (if you check them out).

-Cheers

I alway check stuff out before i post comments about it

but i dont think you will need to readjust them there perfect how it is i dont think people have lot’s of troubles with the entity’s its more scripting the worry about :stuck_out_tongue: and with good boxes like these they can play with entity’s on their own with having a backbone where they can work on
so again Good job

(EB) #5

added another…

“func_map.pk3”

(capslock trojan) #6

this is a great tut again nice work i loved playing with those panzers  but when i come near the chairs there’s something that explodes but the models is missing i think could this be?

(EB) #7

ahhhhh, you will need the entity updates. The missing items are flamebarrels.
You can get the newer entity.definitions file here.
It will also tell you how to put the file into use as so the flamebarrels and other newer entities showup.

Edit:

Fixed/added the missing entities and re-zipped the map

(capslock trojan) #8

owkay got them to work  looks much better now

(EB) #9

Updated to 6 maps…

Added:
textures_common.pk3 // to learn the use of certain clips and other ‘common’ shaders.
brush_manipulation.pk3 // make maps that don’t look so square and artificial after you learn from this.
More next week !

-Cheers

Nice. Do you have any screenshots of what your brush manipulation map looks like?

(EB) #11

These are the “after_beginner/brush_manipulation” screens:

There is more than what I depicted.

One of the “after_beginner/textures_common” map too:

Edit:

I am trying to not clutter these maps up as it may make it tougher for someone to learn…so expect every level to have more and more gradual changes and details.

Hi!
This set of tutorials are unique and they complement all the other tutorials out there on the web. All beginners have different learning styles and will need different types of tutorials for each need. I am sure some beginners will find your tutorials extra special.
You should mention to the begining mappers that elite players tweak their settings so that they do not see smoke. Perhaps in the “func_map.pk3”? I didn’t know that when I was new to playing and mapping. Perhaps you already mention this somewhere, then ignore this.
Thanks for making these. I learned stuff from them. It must have taken a lot of time to make them. They are, together with for example Eric’s “new entities”-pk3s and Ifurita’s tutorials, of high quality and fresh (creative and new).
