1.02 patch: upgrade or downgrade?

(Wah) #1

Although the patch did add a couple nice features such as being able to disable complaints for mines & airstrikes, and fixed some abusable bugs like the airstrike in bank crap, it does appear to have made a few new problems.

I’ve seen some people saying they get all lagged up now, or they cant pick up health/ammo. I have noticed a problem with some votes not popping up. I guess this would be related to changing it so a vote to kick someone is only seen by their own team, only it was a vote to shuffle by xp that was only shown to the one team (which makes it kind of hard to get over 50% concensus if 50% arent able to vote).

I thought there was some sort of bug with adrenaline self until I saw it was moved to a different weapon bank. I’ll have to check that one out.

I have a couple ideas that I think should be implemented in a future patch. First there is a need to have it display HOW a guy dies when he is killed by a teammate. This would hopefully reduce the amount of complaints filed by letting you know if you ran into an airstrike that you didnt see, stepped on a grenade that had been sitting there for 4 seconds, got hit with a stray bullet, or got blasted by a n00b with a panzer. I dont see why this was never in the game to begin with.

Another thing I would like to see is some sort of icon (perhaps the covert ops crosshair) put over top of a covert ops head on your team when he is in disguise. Covert ops get the shitty end of the stick all day long when they get turned into swiss cheese by their own team. I admit even as a non-n00b I occasionally cap a covert ops with a few rounds when he runs around a corner I’m defending. This is especially bad when they are at a range where you have to lead the person instead of pointing right at them and never even see the big red ghostbuster “dont shoot me you stupid n00bs” sign.

90% of the time i know what TKed me TBH even though I dont suppose it would hurt to see the weopon what killed you.

The C-Ops takes his chances when he gets a suit its part of the deal if he gets TKed especially if hes low on HP,there is away to get an icon over his head but he needs to be in your Fire Team and you need to have the Fire team Icons activated, this will show the specific Fire Teams Icon over his head, apart from that the red circle is all you have ,but IMO thats good enough.

Sure you know, but it’s meant to help newbies. Suppose a guy downloads, joins his first game, and immediately starts running into smoke and flags. Each time he explodes, it says “Englander KILLED you, do you want to complain?”… and he can file on you without having any idea what even happened. That’s not right- to help newbies learn, it should tell them how they were TKed. I shouldn’t have to take 3 minutes to type out an explaination of airstrikes whenever a new player comes on.

Also, the death messages that everybody sees should tell the TK weapon as well. This will help decide who to kick, if a vote is called. If it just says
“Englander was killed by TEAMMATE Pamper”
“Englander was killed by TEAMMATE Pamper”
then maybe people will kick me! But if it had been telling the whole story,
“Englander failed to spot TEAMMATE Pamper’s landmine”
“Englander failed to spot TEAMMATE Pamper’s landmine”
then everyone will know that you should be the one getting kicked.

there is away to get an icon over his head but he needs to be in your Fire Team

Yes, there’s a few way for Coverts to get an icon. They can either be in the fireteam, or they can do scripts:

bind W "+forward; vsay_team IAmACovertOps"
bind S "+reverse; vsay_team HoldFire"

But they shouldn’t HAVE to do either of those things. A person on a small team can get an icon all teammates see, so why can’t somebody on a big team? And if you can get protected by spamming vsays, shouldn’t you be able to get the icon without filling up everybody’s chat log?

There’s other reasons Coverts need an icon floating over head whenever disguised.
1. Disguise is a suckishly weak power. It is incredibly easy for enemies to understand the trick. The name goes away at a pretty long range, and the weapon never looks right, and you can lose it very easily (like just TOUCH an emplaced MG, and poof, no more disguise!). The only really helpful thing disguise does is let you open doors- only doors are dumb enough to be fooled. I think that disguise should be strengthened so that an enemy has to be nearly touching you before the name disappears… but that’s a different subject. Disguise needs a boost, and the anti-TK icon is a way to do it.

2. Disguise can actually hurt your own team. A covert who runs around in disguise for no reason will make his teammates jumpy. They can’t just reflexivly snap a shot at every enemy uniform that comes around the corner- they might TK, and they might waste ammo (most important for Panzers, who must wait up to 30 sec to shoot again if they pull the trigger on a friendly covert). And if an actual fight starts, and a covert just watches it from disguise, then all his teammates will have their reaction time greatly slowed as he makes it hard to pick out the real targets.

When designing a public, team-based game, you need to prevent players from hurting their teammates. TeamFortress did this by making you unable to kill them. RTCW lets you kill them, but they can file complaints. However, wearing a disguise for no reason can hurt your own team. To prevent that, a disguised covert should get an icon on his head at ALL TIMES. That won’t only make him safer, it’ll reduce stress on his teammates too!

The new patch has stopped anyone complaining on mines once the the guy running the server enables it.

I still feel new players to the game would still file anyway, there probably not even looking at the info what tells them .

If they are looking at the info they will think he killed me with his airstrike, not even knowing what an airstrike is they will still file cos they have the option to do so,I cant see that making much difference to them simply because there so new to the game.

Id hate to see an Icon over a C-Ops head,it would look dumb and it isnt needed ,all this as been discussed many times and the red circle was the answer to it,if you have a C-Ops making the team jumpy obviously hes in the wrong place and must be a n00b at the class.

(Pamper) #5

It will help them learn! Until a message like that gets printed, they probably won’t even know the game HAS airstrikes. Then, telling them that an airstrike killed him will plant a clue in his mind that the red smoke maybe is dangerous. It might take 2 or 3 times before they figure it out, but the learning process will be accelerated.

Otherwise, newbies who die suddently will just assume you shot him in the back with a panzer, or sniped him in the head.

(Englander) #6

I havnt got a problem with it,it wouldnt hurt the game for such info to be shown, but to be fair i think air srikes and artillary are one of the first thing newbies pick up on not to go near and iam not totally convinced just cos they can read what killed them will accelerate there understanding, they will only understand they were killed by a team mate.

And what when they read u were killed by an MP-40 or Thomson etc, they will think that guy shot me on purpose, sometimes knowing what killed you could get you filed on more.

And lets talk facts its not just newbies to the game what file, you get filed on by people who have been playing a while.

My “Dont File n00b!!!” bind seems to learn them quickly enough.

(_NeT_N_osfera2) #7

well also you need to complain sometimes, to teach people.

like firing panzers/rifle grenades in tight places

(joker) #8

do you guys actually play the game or do you just vote all the time? can’t you see the damn problems most players have?lag/ammo/health/reloading/weaponchange/airstrike/performance/etc. in this case votes/complaining/etc. is the last shit to talk about.

this patch is definitely a downgrade!
i’ve been playing wolfenstein for almost 2 years now and this is the worst shit i’ve ever seen.
once again, thanks splashdamage for destroying this game!

(cynric) #9

maybe its because most of us don’t have any problems?

lag?

weaponchange? works fine for me … are you still using that stupid binocs on weaponbank? then changing you key binds should help

airstrike? whats the problem?

heard about the health/ammo pickup problem, haven’t seen it yet though … maybe i just got lucky

calm down, post your problems with some details and please stop insulting people

(Kamel) #10

at first, i thought that it was what “evened out” the covert ops class from being too strong, but now that i’ve gotten much more advanced, i really think it’s very easy to spot a covert ops on the other team. therefore, i really don’t think covops should be so easy to tk.

(magnum_) #11

maybe if they made the circle appear just a little farther away from their body or something. i don’t shoot cops unless it’s a twitch shot, which i’m pretty damn accurate at anyway, or if i use panzer and i’m just shooting close to them, but not close enough to see the circle. then it’s bye bye cops :frowning: i don’t do it on purpose of course, but i haven’t really figured out an efficent way to check if it’s a cops without getting reemed in the process. u really only have a split second to decide, so it’s kinda hard sometimes when ur in killmode like i am

(Englander) #12

See why ur called joker,I play alot and havnt experienced any of those things, just cos u do dont assume everyone does.

Theres plenty of other threads that discuss what u have mentioned so chill out :banghead:

(g00se) #13

Pamper…you have a point but…It will also make it easier for the other team to see him as well. If his own team is more comfortable with him around then the other side will soon realize…wtf…why is the our guy just hanging out over there.

Running around with an enemy uniform with friendly forces is dangerous business. Especially when everyone is edgy and armed to the tooth. When I am covert ops in disguise I get the hell out of there. All in all I would like to see it remain the same.

(SCDS_reyalP) #14

LMAO, there is always someone who says each patch is the worst ever, and destroys the game. So you shouldn’t be surprised people don’t take you seriously.

Yes, I do play the game, and no, I didn’t have any significant trouble. Maybe I just got lucky. Anyway, if you really played RTCW, you would remember that just about every patch had a patch to fix the patch…

(Lanz) #15

There seems to be one problem that I’ve noticed so far with the new patch and that is that I get connection interrupts now and then. This is something I never get usually and it only happens with the new patch. It last for a couple of seconds and then goes back to normal again.

(k1ll3r) #16

… and going spec on a map load, whole server goes 300 ping + 90% pl or so for all players for some secs, the delay on the log is still there and you have to wait some seconds to know how may you’ve killed, r_rmse was removed for no apparent reason, and…

(Xerxes) #17

Well personally I was expecting a new Map at least.

The Patch helped fix SOME problems, but it caused MORE.

I wish they would put a setting for the recharge rate for the Soldiers Panzerfaust ASAP.

(Englander) #18

Not sure why you thought a map would come with a patch :???:

(Xerxes) #19

Ummm, ok.

In case you didn’t know RTCW had PATCHES with Maps within them.

(Englander) #20

You after remember that RTCW cost you money ET didnt and thats why I didnt expect anything with it,I was just glad that they are trying to solve some issues for nothing,I wish a new map or campaign would have come out with it but I can totally understand why non did since all this hasnt cost a penny/cent to play and on top there very busy with other projects, just be glad there even trying to patch it because they didnt even after bother trying.
