Youtube eating up all the bandwidth

(Tom2160) #1

Okay so I generally have been getting horrible ping whilst dirty bomb and now I know why. Another person in my house is always watching YouTube whilst I play dirty bomb however whenever he is watching YouTube my ping is at 400ms whereas whilst no one is using YouTube its at 20-80ms. We have tested it and seen that it does increase my dirty bomb ping.

So my questions are: A] Why does YouTube use all the bandwidth? and B] Is there a way I can play dirty bomb and he can watch YouTube at the same time.

~Please take to note this other person is stubborn and will not change his routine of watching YouTube 24/7.

B answer:
1)Kill him and hide the body in your trunk/freezer(lol)/garden ;
2) Enjoy Dirty Bomb :smile: .
(That may be a little rough, tho)

Youtube doesn’t eat all the bandwidth, unless you have a slow connection by 2016 standards. Or something between you and the Internet is wrong and it craps out whenever there’s some significant traffic.

Ask them to watch YT videos in 480p instead of 720p/60fps and 1080p/60fps. You’re simply running out of bandwidth for one reason or another.

If your ISP actually allows you plenty of bandwidth then are you both perhaps on WiFi or a really crappy/old router? If so he might be hogging the limited speed of the WiFi connection you have. If this is the case let me know (tag me so I know to look at this again) and there are multiple things that could be causing the issue that can be fixed.

If it is your ISP causing the bandwidth issue you can get a router (if you don’t have one already) that has QoS (Quality of Service) options that can prioritize game traffic over media traffic. My router has this option. Also, if your router doesn’t have this option it might be a model supported by a homebrew router firmware like Tomato that would give you the option.

So depending on what is going on you might have some options that are free or not overly expensive.

Also, moving this to tech support. Please don’t make all of your threads in General. I’ve moved a number of yours :slight_smile:

@Amerika I reckon its because of the crappy/old router we are using. Our ISP also doesn’t give us the best bandwidth and in addition to this our router doesn’t include an QoS option. I’ll look into firmware that might give me the option of using the QoS option.

Thanks for the help and also I’ll make sure to put my threads in the right category.
