Would a capture the flag mode work in dirty bomb?

(Brain_of_Britain) #1

I’ve been thinking about this for a while and I even have a few ideas for capture the flag maps, however I have doubts about whether it would be an accessible mode for all mercs and whether it would be fun enough to compete with objective and execution mode. What do you guys think?

(ElDingDong) #2

I think a CTF mode wont work because of the map layout. Maps in Dirty Bomb are progressive, with different sections. A CTF mode might need new maps, much like execution did.

However, I love the idea, and I would certainly play it, but there are problems.
Engineers would be redundant, they would have no place in a capture the flag. Even if there is some form of c4 planting or generator fixing type stuff, it’ll just become a glorified objective mode.
Given the fast paced gameplay of dirty bomb, it may be impossible to capture a point as you’ll become sitting ducks.

The game mode may not synergise to the style of play Dirty Bomb provides.

There could be a thingy mc jigger to dissemble when you are capturing, and assemble when delivering/returning, and engies could do that faster. Also, remember the forward spawn in terminal? if there was some cover and maybe a wider area to capture in, it would work for just king of the hill or something. And I think a CTF mode may work on some maps. Possibly Market, MAYBE Overground. MAYBE POSSIBLY Chapel. Maybe even Gallery, the new exe map coming “soon”

Anything would be more fun than execution >:)

It would definitely work if we had new maps for it. This, along with Domination, are 2 game modes I really want to see. It does all come down to maps though as the current maps just wouldn’t work. We need more maps anyways.

Would be nice to see community-made maps. That would really help the game.

Story-wise (there always has to be an in-universe reason for a thing), one flag CTF would make sense (one flag is where there is one flag in the middle of the map, and both teams try to get it back to their base. Two flag is where both teams have a flag at their base, and they try to steal the other team’s flag while guarding their own), it could be like Jackal and the CDA both want a datacore from a crashed chopper, or something along those lines, and they both got to the site at the same time. Two flag could probably be given a story, but I don’t want to think that hard right now. Two flag would be cooler gameplay-wise, as it would blend offense and defense into the same match, which would make it so that your squad doesn’t have to be based on which side you’re on, just what role you play on your team.

No, judging from my experience as a former TF2 player ( yeah I know the games are different and DB is not Rock Paper Scissors), CTF would quickly turn into TDM, all because some classes would camp near flag.

Imagine the flag being surrounded by proxy mines, or as soon as someone grabs it, Stoker would throw molotov, making it unable to pick.

I’d sooner expect capture point game mode or objective added to DB, I love capture points since SW Battlefront.

i mean we have stole the drugs which is similar but i would rather se KOTH

(ElDingDong) #9

I would love new game modes. It would be really interesting and fun. I hope we get news regarding any new modes from the devs soon.

(doxjq) #10

CTF could work really well. The only mode I don’t think would work well in Dirty Bomb is FFA deathmatch.

(watsyurdeal) #11

Personally I’m more interested in seeing something like headquarters. Basically King if the hill, but the team that caps the point doesn’t spawn until the enemy team caps it back.

(Jostabeere) #12

I would not mind a CtF, if anyone is forced to play the same class. But that would be boring.
Many may disagree, but I still believe CTF would be frustrating for some mercs. And if a mode is frustrating for some mercs, it’s not a good mode. While others gonna be dominating. Imagine that springy Sparks to get flags. While Thunder or Rhino will most likely never score a flag. And I don’t wanna be forced to camp at my odn flag waiting for a random speedmerc trying to take it.

(Sorotia) #13

I don’t see why CtF wouldn’t work…we’re already half way there with deliver the objective parts of maps…only difference is it would be both sides competing for a objective.

(SamillWong) #14

As long as it’s better than Execution, I’m cool.

(Reddeadcap) #15

What could be made is maps that just suggests that the Jackal group have taken over some CDA base and the CDA have one nearby, with both sides just fighting to get the most data/samples from each other.

@Watsyurdeal I always seen you bring this up, how would this work exactly, a timer on each team, team that has it the whole duration that they need it wins, X amount of captures is the winner or the most until the time ends?

(doxjq) #16

It would be totally situational though @Jostabeere. I used to think the same thing, but then I thought about how all the mercs would be viable. If anything I think all the “useless” mercs might actually be more viable in CTF than any other mode. Rhino would be good for holding down choke points when your team is running back to your base with the flag and you need to put a road block in place, Phantom would be good for sneaky pulls or even just catching people off guard for base defense and things of that nature. I dunno I think it could work out pretty well. The team work element would still be pretty prominent for most classes. Faster mercs for running, recon classes for supporting the runners, medics for supporting the slay classes etc. The only thing I can’t really think about off the top of my head is how engineers would be useful, unless there was more secondary objectives that needed to be done to create faster routes or something for your team to pull the flag (eg repairing generators to open doorways etc)

Edit: They could always make it more balanced too by setting a time to cap the flag, where the slower the merc is, the faster they can cap or something. Sparks might be able to get to the flag in 15-20 seconds but it could potentially take her 5 seconds to cap opposed to Rhino who can cap the flag in 2 seconds say. You could then argue that Sparks will just run it and throw it to a slower merc to cap, but there’s plenty of ways around that too, and probably better left for another discussion if we’re gonna think about those technicalities haha.

(IcySkyz) #17

I would love a new mode. We really only have 2 modes right now, Objective/Stopwatch and Execution. I personally (for no real good reason) hate execution as I don’t like non-spawn game modes so I would love something as an alternative to objective.

(ImSploosh) #18

Who cares about the story THAT much in an online FPS like this? I’m just saying, like if it came down to it, I’m pretty sure people would want the gamemode they want, regardless of whether it “fits” in with the story. But I get what you’re saying! I’m sure it could fit in somehow…

I would love to see bases with turrets to get on, doors to repair, and passages to open/repair. I’m talking about like a map with 2 bases containing the flags and lots of secondary objectives and jumps and verticality (not sure if this is even a word or if there’s another way to say vertical that I’m blanking out on).

I’ll just keep dreaming though.

(bushyg) #19

Mines, turrets and sticky bombs would all be great defence on a flag, I don’t see why everyone thinks the engineers would be useless on CTF.

(TheGreatHoundini) #20

In DB fashion, it would be a variant of “Capture the Computer Consoles”…Like the places are mini-stations with multiple Consoles for capping… like “get all 3” to change the station into your Team Color or something… so Engies are fastest at capturing “The flags” themselves… but you still have that CTF flavor where a lot of your team helps to complete the capture.
