worst game release of the year?

we’ll see in a couple of months the release of rage, battlefield 3, MW3, etc. and we had this game. brink.

I’m pretty sure they will be 100s of shovelware titles that will be released this year that will be way worse than the disappointing but still OK Brink…
I’m pretty sure they will be 100s of shovelware titles that will be released this year that will be way worse than the disappointing but still OK Brink…
As much as I love Brink, based on its pre-release hype, the PSN being down for its first 2 weeks*, it’s at-release bugs, and the post-release DLC delay fiasco… it’s really hard to argue Brink as having a pretty epically bad release.

The shovelware games you speak of generally have minimal, if any marketing and/or hype. Most definitely nowhere near that which Brink had.

*I realize this only affected 1/3 of the user market, but it still was a hit to the IP in general.

Again, I love Brink… but I might be inclined to vote for it if this were a poll.

I doubt anything can be worse than DNF…

At this point, few people expected DNF to be any good. Not after so many engine, team, whatever changes. At the very best, people were skeptical about it. Excluding a small number of truly hardcore fans. There were very mixed expectations.

Almost everyone was hyped up about Brink, however. Most pre-release complaints I remember were about art direction (you might just not like it, fine) or silly arguments that it’s just TF2 ripoff. (Probably the same people who say Warhammer/WarH40k ripped off Warcraft/Starcraft). Then there was a storm of disappointment on this forum. Then amount of traffic took a nose dive.

DNF may be the worse game in absolute terms, but Brink is worse in relative terms. Brink is a bigger disappointment. Few people remember Duke Nukem 3D.

Few people remember Duke Nukem 3D.

I would suspect that the majority of adult players that were hyped up about Brink remember DN3D.

On topic, I would probably rate Brink medium-low on the GOTY scale, although in retrospect these last 2-3 years have been great years for gaming (in terms of gameplay innovation: think Fallout 3, Team Fortress 2, Minecraft, LittleBigPlanet, etc.), so Brink in my eyes isn’t so much bad as it is struggling to keep up with the competition.

(Wildkarrde) #7

Wouldn’t say worst but would say biggest disappointment of the year

Yea there might be games that are worse then BRINK, but people wouldn’t have expected much in the first place

BRINK was all hype hype hype / promises promises promisis

There aren’t even linux dedicated server files available and absolutly no dev has replied in that topic :s

That noone of the devs still didnt replied to the linux dedicated thread implies for me that there wont be any/TBA until Beth gives a route what gonna happen with the Brink franchise, i.e. if further patches shall be skipped in favour of Brink 2 or a completely other game or if they wanna continue with Brink 1 so then it will be just a matter of time to see the linux binaries, but still it’s not decided and due this SD is not allowed to give an answer on this subject.

The game itself is nice so far and enjoyable, although the biggest problem is that the maps can quickly become boring and the community can’t change this fact due the non available map editor. Also another issue are the standard enviroment settings, I am missing “fun” and “unrealistic” settings via a mod like Jaymod for WolfET, some mod in the manner of jaymod but for Brink would be nice
