Wolfenstein Enemy Territory for Mac

(Nail) #21

had and used several lappys in past 10 years, of all of them the Toshiba ones rate highest in my books, IBM were good but very fragile

Wine Is Not an Emulator! It implements [parts of] the Win32 API and lets you run Windows executables, but it doesn’t do any CPU emulation.

Not all Windows applications are compatible, and a lot of games doesn’t run well (if at all).

Not necessarily.

(ParanoiD) #23

Hmm tought it was an emulator, thx. But so this also seems not to be a very good solution to game on a Mac.

(MadMattUK) #24

If Macs were so great, why did they have to go the Intel route?. It’s bit like Linux users thinking they have something over people that use Windows. If you want to play ET, then stick to PC for the best experience of it.

I really wouldn’t bother with emulation, because 9 times out of 10 it’s crap, and will lesson your enjoyment of the program through no fault of it’s own

Just because you are using something different like a Mac, it doesn’t mean that it’s better :).

(kamikazee) #25

It has been mentioned that IBM couldn’t make processors at the rate Apple needed them to have a steady production of Macs.

(ParanoiD) #26

I have to say that they finaly got windows xp booting on a mac… So I guess it doesnt matter anymore what you choose.

(kamikazee) #27

It’s good for a challenge… But since many programs support Mac OS, I would know what to choose.

(KAGE) #28

buh, name one…

btw, a challenge? are Operating Systems testing me…

puts windows on hardcore difficulty level

(kamikazee) #29

buh, name one…[/quote]Ms office, Adobe Photoshop… I could go on if I grabbed a Google search. Mostly graphical programs and video related stuff.

Macs aren’t supposed to run Windows, you know.

Well, installing it and just using it is no problem. But even try once to get it secure…

(ParanoiD) #30

Kamikazee, the topic wasnt about all the progs like photoshop and ms office, but about games. I dont know many games running on mac. At least not good games xcept for ET :). Windows is maybe not the most secure OS around… Many virusses etc… But if you use your brainz you can keep it much like virus free. So dont go to crack sites but get them with the illegal downloaded cd :), dont get porn as it always has virusses… This way I managed to get only 1 virus on 8 locations after a half year without virusscanner! When you dont know what is save and whats not, ok then you get many virusses. Once had to clean a pc for some1. Norton counted >1800 virusses!

(Sauron|EFG) #31

You don’t know what you’re talking about ParanoiD… I never get viruses from porn. :stuck_out_tongue:

As for Mac games, there are more than you’d think. The problem is that it usually takes some time before games are ported (e.g. CoD2 is due in May I think), which obviously isn’t a good thing for online multiplayer games. Hopefully that will improve somewhat now that they use Intel CPUs though.

(jimmyraiden) #32

Well i guess all problems are solved. One can now dual/tri boot on the MacBook Pro! Here is the link: http://nirlog.com/2006/03/18/winxp-and-osx-dual-boot-in-macbook-pro/

I know what i will be doing/trying to do now!!

How does one go about making links on this forum?

Thanks

(jaybird) #33

So any word on a universal binary recompile for Mac? Excuse my possible lack of in-depth knowledge of this, but it seems that it would be really simply to do this.

(jimmyraiden) #34

There would be no need to “recompile” if you have an Intel Mac. Windows now runs natively on the Intel Macs! Check out this link: http://www.apple.com/macosx/bootcamp/
That solves the problem for now. But it would be nice to run Wolf ET in OS X without an emulator.

I dunno, I just do not tend to like using workarounds as a real solution.

But it would be nice to run Wolf ET in OS X without an emulator.

This is ideal.

(jimmyraiden) #36

The Apple solution (Boot Camp) installs Windows XP with SP2 on a partition on the HD. No emulation is used! You have the choice of dual booting. You can set a default as to not have to hit a button to regularly boot into the prefered OS, which should be OS X. It sure is nice not to have to own two laptops. I can finally get rid of my Dell, which I loved. One is better than two… or is it two is better than one…

(kamikazee) #37

I think that he doesn’t like multi-booting. I agree with him that there can be a direct option here, and it saves you at least a windows licence.

I do like the fact that i can dual boot. ANd you still need a legit copy of Windows XP Pro or Home. You need to register it within the 30 days just like you need to do with installing on other Windows compatable computers. This is by far the best solution yet! The xom.efi was great all except for the non-existing video driver/s. Apple has finished the solution and it works great. They are even going to include it on their new OS… OS X 10.5 Leopard which is due near the end of the year. This is good news, right? Microsoft makes more money, and maybe Apple does as well. Who knows?

(jaybird) #39

… it’s still a workaround…

(jimmyraiden) #40

Well, at least one can play Wolf ET on a MacBook Pro without the use of an emulator! I used to play on an iMac G5 and it was kind of weird… Now that Apple has gone to the Intel Chip, there seems to be no problem, of course it runs in windows now and not OS X. Do I care that I have to use Windows to play the latest games, no not really. I have been using windows for most of my computing experience. The only time I recall using an Apple computer was in grade school, I think it was in 5th grade for a report. I was just happy that I got an A on it for not knowing how to use it. My, how times have changed!
