So, this is a tutorial I want to post on some of the clan forums. Basically, as a mapper, if someone has a ‘great’ idea, how should they approach you and what kind of input do you need to get started.
- At a minimum, I’d want a detailed sketch with a description of gameflow and objectives
- The concept owner needs to show that he/she has kicked around the idea with a couple of other people and gotten serious feedback, which is reflected in the most current sketch
- Ideally, the concept owner is the member of a team or league who will commit to testing the map for you and providing constructive AND timely feedback
- The first deliverable (D1) should be blocked out terrain and buildings (solid, textured, blocks) to represent terrain and buildings - this needs to be distributed for layout, distance, and connectivity feedback
- The second deliverable (D2) should be fleshed out key buildings (hollowed, doorways) and scripted objectives, in addition to fixes based on D1. This makes the map playable and should provide enough for a considerable amount of testing
- D3 - Dn, repeat as necessary. Ideally, at this point, you can distribute the map more widely, but still within a controlled group
- The third deliverable should be a _fp version that can be distributed publically for serious stress testing with lots of people and different playing styles.
- Betas can follow this to more finely tweak gameplay, connectivity, etc
What we’ve found with Rommel is that nailing the first couple of steps is extremely valuable for laying out the map and is a major time saver. It really helps to make tweaks early on, rather than making major changes to a more or less finished map.
