Okay, i give up, im no longer hiding my idea!!!

Im making Keen - ET
Any old games will know what im on about…
Commander Keen!!!

So far i have started to put the first map of the first game in, and it seems to be going ok, few problems but someone will help me out… anyway back to the point:

Would i be allowed to use the textures off of the original game, or would i be sued?
If im allowed, i will post screenies, if im not, the screenies wont be textures and will look well… !"£$ and the map wont be recognisable…
anyway, i hope no1 steals my ideas… if you like my idea… try lemmings or doom or some other game :slight_smile:

so basicly would i be allowed to use the textures/sprites from the original game (episiode 1)?

OBJECTIVE:

Allied - Get the ship part and get it to the end of the map (or the ship)
Axis - Stop the allied!

Check the EULA of Commander Keen. You ll find your answer in there.

You could still rework textures and make them look very similiar, and put them into your map as custom textures, right?

Ah, so you want to make boxes where you can jump through but not fall down?
I’d actually sugest then to make a mod out of it with a special kind of surfaceparm to allow volums which you can’t fall through but can move in.

I think there’s no real solution to it otherwise, or you need doublejump mods and a higher type of box.

Haven’t followed the other thread with the texture.
But couldn’t the boxes be done with scriptmover.
After jumping through the box you could exchange the boxes with solid ones.
Problem:
Only one player could jump through the box.

Edit:

If i get this right the boxes should be like in Mario.
There is a RTCW / ET mod (actually a map) with a Marion theme.
Not sure if there are those boxes in it.

i cannot find the EULA :frowning: where can i find it? i dont think its in the /KEEN Folder on my comp :frowning:
if its in the install, i dont have the insall, i got the game off my dad, off a backup cd, that has all his old games on, i dont even know if games back then HAD a install… but if its in the install i dont have it so, could someone tell me if i could use them or not? the awnser is probally no but hey, or does anyone have the makers e-mail so i can e-mail them to ask for permission? mind out though chances are i wont get a reply…

With the release of Commander Keen, id Software & Apogee had a huge hit on their hands - the two companies getting a lot of great press over the landmark title for the PC. Joe Siegler remembers the relationship of the two companies…

i asked apogee, because i couldnt find a e-mail for apogee, and they said they were copyrighted by id :frowning: so now i need a e-mail for id, but i cant find it :frowning: :frowning: :frowning: :frowning: i might just use my own basic textures :slight_smile:

thoose textures should be easy to make in photoshop.
look for some ps tutorials. i know there is a lynda.com tutorial

I think it would be the best to make the textures your own for copyrights :slight_smile:

Have any ET mapper ever been sued for using copyrighted material ? And actually any third party mapper ?
Plus using commander keen sprites into wolf is not really possible, regarding the size of the pics, so that’ll meen you would not use the material, but get inspiration from it. Plus you’re not making any profit on the map are you ? And this is like a tribute to the game. Anyway its quite unlikely the copyrights holder (Apogee > 3DRealms) would ever know of this map, and even more unlikely that they would care about legal issues.
Theres already pacman, loderunner, pong, tron and other old games related maps. Quake3 had mario maps and other stuff as well … I dont think any of those mappers are currently sleeping in jail. <_<

Being legal is ok, but dont forget to be objective.

if you want you can change it to sidescroller like game :slight_smile:
if you really care i can help you with coding game into sidescroller ( pretty simple but great conversion :slight_smile: )

very well if you want to have it viewed from side like original Commander keen it would be better to do a sidescroller…
and if you want to make more maps and you dont like changing player binds and settings ( like return to castle mario bross ) it is much better to make a mod which can handle the map properly

I serisouly would like to see it if this get past the concept stage.
All those players moving in the same plane, the perspective you’re seeing the level from…

Any idea on how to make a MP game out of it? (With an eye kept on good MP gameplay, I mean)

Still, the player can turn around. You’d need to restrict the player to move in only 2 axis… And you’d need some strange levels to be able to see them all from the side.
