Windows 10 -- Working vs. Not-Working System & Environment Comparison

(TheWalkinDude) #1

Hi,
The purpose of this discussion is to help determine why some people running Windows 10 cannot play Dirty Bomb.

Here’s what I’d like to see. I’ll go first:

----- Begin -----

Machine:
Alienware Alpha
Intel i3 4130T 2.9Ghz, 3MB cache
8GB DDRL3 1600Mhz RAM
512GB SSD/5400RPM SATA-III HDD
GeForce GTX 860M, 2GB DDR5
Intel Dual-band AC3160 wireless
Razer Orochi (v2) mouse
Razer OrbWeaver (also v2) keypad
Genuine Microsoft XBox 360 Wired Controller (unpluggd when OrbWeaver plugged in - compatibility issues in some games that use a controller)
Logitech K120 keyboard (don’t laugh)
Realtek gigabit ethernet wired to gigabit Arris router via CAT-6
C-Media CM119 USB Sound Card

Software:
Windows 10 Home, clean install, current on updates (MS or otherwise)
Avast Internet Security
Google Chrome (Avast Online Security, AdBlockPlus plugins)
ProcessExplorer
Steam
VLC Media Player (no plugins)

(STEAM) Dirty Bomb
(STEAM) Black mesa
(STEAM) Borderlands
(STEAM) Borderlands 2
(STEAM) Dead Island
(STEAM) Dead Island Epidemic
(STEAM) Giana Sister Twisted Dream
(STEAM) Halo: Spartan Assault
(STEAM) Metro 2033
(STEAM) Path of Exile
(STEAM) Prototype
(STEAM) Remember Me
(STEAM) Spiral Knights
(STEAM) Trove
Project Spark
Skyforge
Supernova

Dirty Bomb Status: Flying high at 35 - 60 FPS (up from 25 - 55 on Windows 8.1)

Where/when, in-game, did you crash: I didn’t

Issues: None

Conditions: Nothing running but Steam, Synapse, Chrome and Dirty Bomb, of course

------ End ------

With this specific set of information, we can start to figure out what the people who can’t run the game have in common with one another that they don’t have in common with those of us who can.

This will lead to a solution a hell of a lot faster than whining, flaming the Steam forums, and threatening to take your ten bucks elsewhere (Seriously, Kenson, don’t take that personally. It was way too perfect of an example not to use)

Cheers,
-Jay

Machine

i7 4770 @4.6Ghz
GTX780
16gb RAM
Gigabyte MOBO (name escapes me)
Upgrade from Win8.1 Pro to Win10 Pro

The only issue I’ve had with Win10 overall is the bug that happens with Mumble and Nvidia Shadow Play where it will eat all of your system RAM. This happened to quite a few people during scrims who were using Mumble including myself. Nvidia is looking into a fix.

Dirty Bomb runs great with stable FPS. I have had one crash since upgrading but I have had similar crashes in the past so I’m not convinced it was related to Win10.

Could you give a list of what’s installed on your system (the above software list is complete, for example), the status of available updates, what was running while you played, etc? Be as detailed as possible, if you would.

I stuck at Fetching Servers once since W10, but I’m pretty sure it happened once on 8.1, too.

(Amerika) #4

I have a number of things installed on my machine which would make the list incredibly annoying for a forum post. If I was having issues I’d supply the list via Pastebin.

Sticking to basic hardware is typically fine with this until somebody actually runs into a problem. Then posting installed programs can be helpful.

Works for me. Will keep the list more manageable. Those of us without issues should keep an eye on the installed programs of those of us with issues, though.

Works for me with,

I have the Alienware Alpha, base version (same one as you), and it worked perfectly. And plus, they don’t have GeForce GTX 860M, 2GB DDR5, ithey build their own GTX graphics. And my one has 70-130 fps. Don’t know how you only get 35-60, maybe it’s because of a lot of other games in your system. Also your antivirus seems to be the cause.

I’ll make a full report later. But right now i’m just too lazy.

I like my games pretty, so I jack my settings all the way up (through the nVidia control panel) This results in lower frame rates and a much prettier picture/better overall experience, IMO (also, I only have a 60Hz screen)
Though it’s a custom GeForce, it’s essentially an 860M (Device ID 10DE:1392 = GM107M [GeForce GTX 860M]). Feel free to Google it.
When I’m gaming, I set Avast into gaming mode. If you do some Googling, you’ll find that Avast doesn’t interfere with or slow gaming down, at all; it’s used and recommended by a /lot/ of gamers.

And now we’re both off-topic. This discussion is to figure out why some people can’t play DB while others can.

(Ghosthree3) #10

Avast is ok, I wouldn’t use it myself though. I believe the top 2 AVs right now are NOD32 and Kaspersky, and they have been for literally years.

(TheWalkinDude) #11

I’ve been an avid Avast supporter since '99, and I’ve never had a problem with it. They update their definitions more often than anybody else, have [far] less false-positives than anybody else, catch more bad stuff than their competition (in my personal experience, your mileage may vary), have stellar customer service and are priced competitively. I get a 4-box license annually for $45.

(Ghosthree3) #12

It’s definitely not bad, don’t get me wrong. It’s just never had the top spot. As for definition updates, NOD32 has updated 2500 times for me in the last year and a half or so. That’s 4.5 times a day.

(TheWalkinDude) #13

Amerika, is that Roland Deschain in your avatar?

I go by that name in a lot of games, and you should recognize “The Walkin’ Dude” from a book very closely tied to the Dark Tower series

(misspo) #14

Guys, if you don’t give your nvidia/amd drivers version, it’s going to be pretty useless
I wanted to upgrade myself and i can’t see which version is the most stable on db :frowning:
