Will we have animated shorts in the future?

(frostyvampire) #1

I know that we have a merc role-calls for new released mercs but not all mercs have it and it only explains the abilities and that’s it.
I was thinking about a short video about 2-5 mins long with the merc’s background story and will also give all the info (or most of it) about that merc’s abilities. Something like “Meet The” series Valve made for Team Fortress where each character has their own short video where they are either talking about themselves with clips of their abilities (like Demo talking about himself with clips of him blowing stuff up) or with a video showing what they do (like Meet The Medic where he operates on Heavy and then heals and deploys an uber).
Think about the camera catching Proxy as she is using her blowtorch on a mine (building a mine if that’s how you call it) in her garage and then she takes off her hot rod mask thing from her face and introduces herself to us and talks about her mines and that she is an engineer with clips of her placing a mine and then luring 3 enemies to it and doing some engineer stuff. Something like that for every merc

I know that right now there are more important stuff to do for the game but I was wondering if this will happen somewhere closer to the official release (please don’t comment jokes about it never happening, deep inside we all know it will) or when the more important stuff (bug fixes, casual MM and etc.) are dealt with or close to being finished.

TL;DR:
I wanted to know if we will get an animated short for every merc somewhere in the future.
Maybe closer to the official release after the important stuff are fixed

Cool idea, I love these videos, but for now, I will say I would want them to spend these resources on content and release comic or something

@BananaSlug
Yeah of course. I even wrote it in the post so it will happen after these important stuff are done or close to be finished. You probably read the TL;DR, I’ll edit the TL;DR

Yeah I know but I also had future in mind ( but didn’t say that xD ).
Shit like that is very time and money consuming, I would rather see them spending that on new content

How about community members get together and do this? That could be fun

@Dysfnal
It could be fun but there are a few problems:

  1. We need the voice actors to do the voices. If the original voice actors don’t record themselves for this it will either sound bad quality (if you record parts from all their voice lines in the game files) or it will sound very wrong (if you record someone’s else’s voice, no matter how close it is to the actual voice, it will never be the same and people like me WILL notice the difference)
  2. Usually when community members do stuff like that, they don’t bring the point of the merc very well. We need these shorts to be not only fun to watch but also replace merc role-calls so new players can watch that short and already know what the merc is gonna be about
  3. Most of the community members are not professionals. Which might make the video quality not as good as it would’ve been if Splash Damage would hire professional animators to do it. I know that some are very talented but admit it, most of us aren’t
  4. Since community members will do it for fun and on their free time, I highly doubt anyone would spend money on this or waste too much time. So the same person won’t make more than 3 merc shorts and since they won’t pay much for good softwares and stuff, the quality again might get hurt.

I’m not against it of course. But I think it will be a lot better if Splash Damage are the ones to do it because they will keep stuff simple for new players and the videos will be high quality.
But maybe we can have something like the Saxxy awards where community members create videos and the best ones will receive something ingame (maybe a special animated trinket or an obsidian card of their choice that will make the skins animated or something nice). But again, the game will have to be fully released for this to happen

Now this is awesome idea.

Actually I can imagine Thunder’s video about him talking about Russia too much and not about himself

For a moment I thought this thread would be about cloth physics :slight_smile:

I’ve been hoping the the exact same thing, amigo.

Hopefully SD will consider it, eventually. Since it’s probably the best way to advertise your game. And expand the lore with character development :slight_smile:
