Will this computer be able to handle this amazing game?

(Left4Lune) #1

Hi thar, I just wanted to ask you guys who most probably know a helluva lot more about the requirements for this game and such than I do, this:

Take a look at this computer: (Ya, so, apparently they switch around the graphics card whenever they get a new stock of the computer. And now they have, for some retarded reason, gone down to a much worse powercolor 512mb version and shit… But I can wait, it’ll go back to the awesome XFX 1gb version sooner or later…)>>http://www.komplett.se/k/ki.aspx?sku=323200 (I know, not in English, but scroll down a tiny bit and you will see all the parts it contains)
Will this computer be able to handle this game well once built?
I would really like to know =3

Also, is it a good gaming computer in general? (It’s the first computer I’m gonna build, and I decided to go easy by getting a complete pack the first time.)
at this.

The game is built on idtech4, heavily modified, but that system looks more than adequate to me. As far as I know, Brink won’t require bleeding edge hardware, being a cousin of ETQW and Doom 3. In any case, your system is better than my current system, and I plan to run Brink just fine  Or so I hope…

The key points are a multicore processor, PCI 2.0 with tons of VRAM, and plenty of system RAM. This helps all applications, in addition to running 3D games like a champ…

here is an old (september) question 'n reply (from Rahdo).

Q: You said that you will use the idTECH4 engine and that it will be highly optimized. Does that mean that people with 3 year old PCs will be able to play it with acceptable FPS?
A: I wish i could say, but it’s too early. i can say that it’s definitely my goal that you don’t need a really top end uber machine to play competitively…

could’ve been some development in the area obviously. but seeing how it’s delayed 'til autumn i’m guessing it’ll be awhile 'til we get more specific pc specs

While I’m at it: What is TRULY the superior gaming OS? XP 64 bit or Windows 7 64 bit? So far Windows 7 seems to be the best, but some sites still say XP is better. What do you guys think?

(Shiv) #5

Whatever os you are more comfortable in is the os of choice.
its not worth getting into it more than that because your normally talking 5fps difference MAX on fairly high fps counts.
remember also that allot of sites might not have been updated for a while… so the internet has this odd ability to keep things under the heel even when they have been fixed because some old stories keep popping up when people google it.

Well… if you ever want to play a game that runs on directx 10, get Windows 7 (/vista)

:}

(tokamak) #7

(Definitely worth it)

(Left4Lune) #8

Man, I can’t wait till’ I get this computer

or XP http://www.techmixer.com/download-directx-10-for-windows-xp/

(aaa3) #10

xp is a good os, but i heard that its 64 versions are 2b feared like plague, lol. so if u insist on 64, go 7. xp only in 32 a go.

(Left4Lune) #11

Ya I think I’ll get Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit.

You’re gonna have to keep in mind though that you’re still playing a 32-bit game on a 64-bit operating system. Regardless of it being Windows XP or Windows 7, you’ll be living with the chances of getting worse performance (and more problems) than on a 32-bit operating system.

Unless BRINK comes with a 64-bit executable… That would be just dynamite.
(Although really, not even Crysis reaches the 3.5gb memory. So I doubt BRINK will either.)

64-bit OS’s are bad for 32-bit games?

Well… F.

How much of a performance loss are we talking here?

EDIT: Since this game is so new, shouldn’t 64-bit mode be pretty standard?

(Nail) #14

if the game has any sort of multi-core optimization (which Brink does) you’ll be fine

(DoubleDigit) #15

I run everything on my XP64 since almost two years, found drivers for any peripheral, including two printers, scanner, monitor calibration tool. The only thing that doesn’t run as intended is the Microsoft Xbox common controller. Yeah, a hardware made by Microsoft isn’t supported in one of Microsoft’s OS, how dumb is that.

I’d get Windows 7 but there’s nothing wrong with XP64 for now so I’m not giving up on it yet.

Instead of spreading stupid rumours, keep them to yourself.

Oh I’m not saying 64-bit operating systems are horrible for 32-bit games. Thing is, 32-bit software is run through emulation on Windows 64-bit. (Or a form of emulation) This doesn’t mean you’ll lose like 50% of the performance though. And judging from the specs list of your new computer, I really wouldn’t worry about this.

It’s just that so many people think that 64-bit is ‘magical’ and capable of ‘everything’. :stuck_out_tongue:

I think I’ll be forced to stick with 64-bit either way, since I’m planning on upgrading this computer a lot more. A lot more RAM for example. (I’ve read that 32-bit doesn’t support all that much RAM, not enough for me anyways)

Thanks for all the info guys, you’re awesome.

No, Your awesome.

(Nail) #19

32bit = 4 gig RAM including GPU RAM
64bit = 192 gig RAM on Win 7 Pro

good choice I’d say
