Why remove controller support?

(Roland) #1

This is a question pointed directly at the devs. Just why?
You’re narrowing your userbase drastically. You lose anyone who has just switched to PC gaming. You lose anyone who has disabilities (like myself) and can’t use keyboard and mouse for long periods of time. (and another point on the disabled end, is most of us are broke. We love f2p!) You lose anyone that prefers to play games on their couch as opposed to hunched over a computer desk.
And for what devs?
To appease a few foolish people who believe kb&m will always beat a gamepad?
I legitimately do not understand your logic devs. Please explain this.

To appease a few foolish people who believe kb&m will always beat a gamepad?"

AKA, 100% of PC users and ~30% of muti-console users who know the facts?

You’re coming across is super selfish right now, disability or not. The development staff has bad end metrics and I’m beyond willing to be that they saw less than 10% of the current player base using controllers…so they cut the feature. They don’t have to continue supporting a feature that FEW use that bogs down the client for everyone…

(watsyurdeal) #3

…learn how to use it

Seriously, you will fucking die using a controller. Mouse is way more precise.

(CCP115) #4

I don’t see why the devs would disable it entirely…

But then I wouldn’t see why anyone would even consider playing an FPS with a controller against other smart people using a keyboard and mouse. No master racing here, just cold hard facts.

(Ghosthree3) #5

I can’t tell if this is satire or not.

Also the answer is because they don’t support it so don’t want to give the idea that it is and also to protect people from themselves.

(frolicsomeCrane) #6

You get a LOL from me.

(XavienX) #7

You do have a point, but this game’s mechanics and movement and such are based around players using keyboards.

(Dragoon) #8

Man. I was actually looking for a gamepad feature for this game (my carpal tunnel gets worse when playing any FPS on PC).

(N8o) #9

Sorry about your disability but… This fast paced shooter would have you on your knees trying to play with a freaking controller. No aim assist, so good luck with that…

It actually makes me sad reading some of these replies, it’s like they didn’t even bother to read what you said. Now -

I can completely empathise with you in regards to having something hinder your gameplay and people telling you to essentially just “deal with it”. I get similar responses every time I bring up the issue of needing a colourblind mode in the game! XD

But anyways, I have to agree it would be nice to see some controller support in the game for those who simply struggle to use a keyboard and mouse, for whatever reason. I must reinforce the point though that it is a fast paced game and as many have correctly said, you will definitely be at a disadvantage using a controller, over a keyboard and mouse - but if you genuinely can’t use keyboard and mouse, then I guess it’s your only option :stuck_out_tongue:

Anyways, might I suggest something like this: http://pinnaclegameprofiler.com/

There are other brands of programs out there that do the same thing, but essentially it’s a background program that binds the keys of a keyboard to the controller. So where you might normally press W in game, you can bind it to “Left thumbstick up”, or something… See what I mean?

It might be a good temporary solution for the lack of controller support right now. I would recommend shopping around for other similar software before jumping into a purchase with that one - that one is just an example (although also supposedly one of the best).

I’m sorry about some people’s responses here too :s They’re normally not this grouchy. I guess they are just bummed out over the wait for Phoenix <3

Please do not pay attention to some of the other replies. It’s totally understandable if you’re disabled that you’d want at least some way to play if you can’t use a standard mouse and keyboard setup. I’ve seen some amazing things done by people who are disabled with non-standard controls and input methods and it’s inspiring. Every time I see Brolylegs play a match in USF4 it simply amazes me.

I do know this game is being built from the ground up with only the mouse and keyboard support and any previous support it had for a controller was directly due to UE3, the engine DB uses, having native support for controllers. If issues arise with using a controller during the ongoing development of DB right now then I doubt they will be looking into it sadly. It might be something that will be looked at as the game gets cleaned up nearer it’s full release.

Is there keymapping software that could resolve some of your issues or is the functionality just broken right now?

@Roland Also, I am a fan of your forum name considering my forum avatar

While I understand the op is disabled, it still answers his question to a degree why there’s no controller support. It wouldn’t work, the pacing and the way it plays would be hellish on a controller.

(Nail) #13

SD are associated with http://www.specialeffect.org.uk/ and have been for a while, chances are pretty good controllers will be addressed

(Litego) #14

Why wouldn’t it work? It’s a shooter like any other. So what if it’s a little faster than console shooters? If they want to use a controller for whatever reason I say let them. Obviously they’re not going to be able to compete with good KB/M players, but I bet good controller players could beat the average KB/M player. And their ranking would represent that, so in competitive they would be playing among equally skilled players, even though their teammates and enemies use KB/M. And in casual they would be just another random player. It’s not like every KB/M player is a god at the games. I’ve seen players go entire games without any kills. So I don’t really care about their input device as long as it doesn’t give them any advantage, aka aim assist. I say the more the game supports, the better.

(watsyurdeal) #15

Well aside from the hurdles regarding aiming, there’s also input to consider

D PAD to switch weapons
Left Bumper - Quick Ability 1
Right Bumper- Quick Ability2
X - Reload
A - Jump
Y - Use
B - Crouch
Control Stick 1 - Aim
Left Trigger - Fire
Right Trigger - Aim Down Sights

Then they’d have to set up separate control functions for the menus, which right now you can’t even use the up and down keys or wasd keys to move and navigate. Plus Mic Support, they need to an open mic function.

Not saying it’s impossible, but it’d be a lot more work than a weekend to implement, and it’s probably pretty low on their priority list.

(SteelMailbox) #16

Since DB is a game that is heavily depended on your aim i’d say even if there was controller support controller players will never do as well as Keyboard and mouse players.

(Amerika) #17

Some people just want to play regardless of how well they match-up against others. Winning isn’t everything

Hey this game is not called a competitive shooter for nothing

(Litego) #19

Irrelevant. That’s always the case in any FPS game.
