Why PB shouldn't be DB's anticheat

(Dragonji) #1

This topic concerns on the future as I believe anticheat software is something that will and should come later as for now gameplay is the most important thing to work on but I can’t see any reason to not start a discussion about anticheat right now

Game-Violations, the PunkBuster multistream and live banning community, closed its doors after 9 years of active support for PB protected games. Also, GV admins pointed out on their site why EvenBalance/PunkBuster sucks ass:

I just can’t imagine EvenBalance providing anticheat solutions for DB. PB used to be terrible problematic in W:ET and I don’t believe EB improved it in any way over the years.

yes and pb suddenly quit supporting ET , and like game-violations says it failing to update there resources.
game-violations was well respected and used by many league, tournament sources, eyedent in COD4
this is dramastic for cod4! i would also not recommend to work with PB anymore with DB , on the other hand i’m not really informed of the other possibilties

I also really hope that PB isn’t used; there were way too many problems (even in big name games) with PB and I was so glad when I started playing CSS and suffered less headaches because of VAC.

The only thing is, though, is that there really isn’t that many anticheats and there’s even less that are relatively good and kind to the end user. VAC works well for me as I have had no where near the level of frustration that I had with PB, but it seems that most really hate it’s time-delayed bans and say it doesn’t actually work. To be honest, most of the time I don’t even notice real hackers unless it’s blatantly obvious, because I just assume they’ve practiced and are stermy-level of good. :stuck_out_tongue:

As long as DB doesn’t use one of those crappy F2P CS ripoff anticheats I will be happy; I don’t think I ever want to see another cheat program named “Black Mamba” or some other very intimidating name, lol.

I read somewhere that SD made they own anti-cheat on the warchest website ( Sell stuff tab)
http://fireteam.net/products

Security
No hacking, no cheating, no lost revenue - maintain an engaged player-base.

some post on the official forum

Oh, I haven’t seen this topic before.

I say no to PB because they haven’t updated PB to support CoD4 with Windows 8. No Pro Mod for Sync is a mad Sync.

(acutepuppy) #7

I haven’t recalled many UE3 games using it.

I wonder what kind of anti-cheat DB is going to use and how it’s going to work.

I got a lot of questions.

Is their already an anti-cheat? I would love to know this as anti-cheats can be a pain in the ass and can cause a lot of problems. Just look at punkbuster and all it’s false kicks/errors. Would be handy to test it out before the game gets released.

How is the anti-cheat going to catch cheaters?

What kind of policy will splashdamage have against cheaters? Zero policy(infinite ban)? or something else?

How do bans work? Will it be based on hardware, IP, forum account, a combination or something else? Will server admins have the same options?

What will be the community’s role in catching cheaters? Will their be an option to flag cheaters for example?

If there don´t already exist cheats for this game,
they surely will be out there a few days after the game went public.

The only way to really help catching cheaters in competetive is demo recording.

As this game will be F2P, public will be flooded by cheaters.
IPs and MAC-Adresses can be changed in less than 5 minutes. New Code to new E-Mail: another 5 minutes.
Maybe make them wipe the whole game from their system and have them download it again could be effective.
Until they find a way to get around that, too…

anti cheat is a one time purchase of a biometric thumbprint scanner tied to steam and forum account, discounted if bought with game

Seems there are a couple of issues.

Identification. As Nail points out, you need a method to identify a unique user. While the ability exists to create a new account cheating has relatively zero repercussions. Problem however is that people don’t want to share their identity for many reasons and this allows the cheaters to ride the anon wave. I have hoped in the past that Valve would offer an open platform which people could opt into and create a validated (real identity verification) and any game developer could use to regardless of whether they are on Steam or not. Of course SD may be able to offer a similar system through Fireteam.

I suppose the problem is how do you know the person you are verifying is actually that person when you’re doing it remotely. Someone could, even with a thumb printer, get a friend or family member to help create a second, third, fourth identity.

The other point seems to be detection. I think SD might be onto something here with Echo. If anomalies can be identified through statistical averages and player performance over time then that might be a good way to at least flag players for closer inspection. I like the VAC system of banning in waves and not instantly. Of course they’ll need a way to verify an actual cheat in use which is always the tricky part.

ECHO or something based on it could be an anticheat system.
