Why make the new Obsidian's limited???

(Ohsnapkline) #1

so why are the new obsidian’s limited? doesn’t it make more sense to just always keep them on the store and keep adding more and more cosmetics so that people have a large selection of things to buy since …you know, THERE ISN’T MUCH TO BEGIN WITH!

long term sales of cosmetics versus this panic sale makes more sense.

WHY ARE YOU GUYS SO GOOD AT SHOOTING YOURSELVES IN THE FOOT!!!

Same reason Founders Packs are not available anymore. Do you think they want to lose money? No, they want obsidians to be rare, exclusive and valuable

They’re meant to be rare cards. If they are always available they will be of little value, especially with those awful loadouts.

Along with what others said, you have to look at it from another perspective. Making them Limited Edition makes them special. “Special” or “Collectible” or “Unique” are key words that spark people’s interest. Due to the short availability of these cards, they’re adding rarity and value to them. People will want to purchase them before they’re gone because if you know you’ll never have the chance to get something again, you’re more likely to buy it.

^This is the idea behind certain sales in the real world. Ya know, like Black Friday as a big example. People rush out on this one/two days a year to buy tons of stuff (even things they don’t want or need) because they believe they’ll never see those good deals again. Basically, just add a “limited” label to anything and you’re most likely to increase sales unless it’s a horrible product. Added onto that, the people that don’t purchase these skins will know that they’re rare, therefore valuable, and in the future when more are released for a limited time, they may be more tempted to obtain them!

So in short, this may be a good business strategy. Come out randomly with these limited edition obsidian skins and because people haven’t had the chance to buy anything like it in a long time, as well as wanting that unique factor, they’re more likely to buy it now. They know they can’t procrastinate so they open up those wallets and toss their money out!

*Not the best at explaining this, but it actually is a good strategy.

that’s all well and good but it does not make sense from a financial stand point, this games market needs stuff to sell with some long term consistency.

rare skins might work for other games that support a larger population that will buy that all up but not this free to play game with a low retention rate of players.

I want DB to succeed! (badly) that’s why I say harsh things like: “watch when splash damages new poultry company overlords look at their quarterly earnings compared to warframe and start to think they made a bad investment”.

overall though with dockyard and the more regular updates Kline Greatly approves and things are starting to shape up but there is still a lot of work to be done

@Ohsnapkline Well they have expert and elite cases to buy, you can also buy all the mercs and a few trinkets. I’m sure they’ll every so often release some other loadouts players can buy in the future. For example more obsidians.

Also if players know they are going to go rare then they will feel more inclined to buy the item as it is only available for a limited time, so they get more profit in a shorter period of time as players have to buy them in a certain time frame or else they’ll miss out.

It could also serve as an incentive to stay active as you might not want to miss out on these special offers which may lead to a more active community?

On another note, I feel that so long as they manage to release heist and castle this year (or any other maps they’re secretly working on) and introduce matchmaking then hopefully the game will be in better shape.

I really like Arty and Stoker, but the primary and augments are rather underwhelming for AU$14.99 and AU$12.99

I can Agree with a lot of this, i’m picking up what your throwing down.

but i’m really curious if this is more sustainable than just always having the obsidian cards out for purchase.

me and my friends were actually put off by the fact that its a pre-determined loadout too. if this was just a skin I could apply to a loadout I already own I’d be throwing my money at splash dizzle.

not to mention all the new players who might start playing the game becoming completely turned off by the idea that they missed out on something cool and can no-longer get it. I don’t think limiting them JUST SO PEOPLE CAN FEEL ENTITLED is the right decision when there is already so little to buy in the market, splash needs to be expanding their profitable inventory not doing these flash sales.

founder cards I get, that can be super special but to do these limited sales all the time versus just having a wide selection of stuff to buy in the market? look at dota2 look at TF2 heck even warframe keeps primes up for sale for like 2 years or some stuff before they vault them (and they bring them back temporarily anyway) there is always stuff to buy.

the current loadout system needs to be dropped/ditched completely for something more flexible. separate loadouts and skins and make them both something you can earn
individually and make the skins a one-time use item you can apply to any loadouts you own or crafted.

short term cash grab VS long term sustainable profit. ¯_(ツ)_/¯ just saying

yeah sadly I’ve hardly ever felt incentivised to buy those cases or trinkets and when I did buy a case one time it was a completely underwhelming card that actually turned me off from playing the game. And what about veteran players like me who already have everything? I think splash should focus on things everyone would like to buy and drop this RNG Post-Nexon loadout system in the garbage.
