Why is this a thing?

The game only has ~3.4k active players … so why cant I play, as a gold 1 with my unranked friend?
Dont pretend its to protect lower ranked player or something. Just recently I played a 4 man lobby pre with all gold1 …
we got qued with a bronze teammate and faced 3 cobalt ranked players.
All this does is preventing friends from playing ranked together and maybe even losing players.

i dont really know about this, i havent played ranked since this season and last season people are complaining unranked being matched against gold and silvers

now we can see the fault on that theory

It’s simple… because of smurfs who devalue and wreck the whole ranked MM system with their lower ranks than usual. Not that it’s hard to smurf now anyway… but being even easier would be hilarious.

4/5 man queues will match you with lot higher ranked opponents - that’s how the system work to balance out bigger stacks.

Honestly ranking is broken even without smurfs. When your team is largely RNG, the less people in your premade, the more your rank is based on the luck you’ve had in team composition, since personal performance isn’t a factor.

match making is borked, they only have the PTS players to actually test things as everyone else just complains and won’t even try help out by playing crappy ranked games until they improve. Want things to get better ? Test the game for the devs instead of complaining you got killed by a sniper while standing in the open admiring your new trinket

Yea cause 4 gold 1´s and one bronze 4 against 3 cobalts and high rank golds is totaly balanced. I thought our random just sucked ass but no, he is in the rank he needs to be.

I can only explain why they did it… I can’t justify nor agree with it, but it’s how it is.

This is beside the point but active players and concurrent players are not the same thing. The game has " ~3.4k" concurrent players. I assume that is a peak. Steamcharts shows 2.7K as the most recent peak. This is very different to the number of active players which according to steamspy is 150,000 players (within 1.8%).

Just a needless nitpick

Niche game for niche audience, which is good, but when I look at Lawbreakers…

(Someone pls correct me if i’m wrong)

The 150k players are those who, at some point, installed Dirty Bomb. Considering it is free to play, i don’t know if Steam still considers it as still in your library even if you uninstalled it. When i go to the page of a F2P game i once installed, steam says it is already in my library.

To know how healthy a multiplayer online game is, the concurrent players is what you should looking at, because it indicates how many players you can encounter in game when you’ll be playing. If you have 1M people playing the game, but only 2 concurrent players, you can without no fear says this game is dead.

And this is not even taking into account regions. Those 2.7k peak concurrent players are those from all around the world. Even if an American is playing at the same time as an European, there’s little to no chance they will be playing together. You can then assume peak concurrent players is above the real number of players you’ll really be able to encounter in game.

According to my observations your first mistake was to play ranked.

(binderr) #12

I got gold ranked just after 10 pre-matches at the start of the season, since than few matches later got gold rank 2, i’de like to play more but now it takes really really long to join a ranked game, thus I’ve stopped playing it!
least i’ll get a gold trinket at the end. lol

That’s actually a different number again. That would be the total number of owners which is 8.2 million.

The active number of players are people who have been active in the past two weeks. I agree with what you say after this point. I brought it up as a nitpick, not to try to discredit OP’s point.
