Why is the sound so flat and misplaced ?

(Angry Machine) #1

Ok, I already posted about that, but today I played a bit of BFBC2 and Crysis 2 (MP) to test a few things :

  • in these 2 games the sound is awesome (especially BFBC2), the reverb, the occlusion and sound placement is very well coded and rendered.

So, I wonder why I feel Brink sound is flat and messy, it’s hardly impossible to spot an enemy with his gun or footsteps, or spot a grenade by the rebound sound…

For exemple : When someone fire a full clip at 30 feet from me it seems to me he’s sniping me from 150 feet…

Seriously guys, have you already heard a shotgun in reallife ? If you are to close your hears will bleed ! I used to shoot with AK47 (semi-auto model) and the shots can be heard and reverb for miles !

Please, fix that, it’s boring.

Sounds fine to me. Perhaps you need better speakers? You got a surround set-up? If not, try headphones.

Not trying to be sassy, I honestly think the sound in Brink is absolutely wonderful.

ya the sound is very good in the game, i have no idea what your talking about

(turtsmcgurts) #4

I have a pair of high end headphones and i’m in the same boat as you, it’s pointless to use the silent running ability when the enemy can’t tell if you’re in front of behind them.

edit: directional sound works perfect in any other game

I think their sound engine is ****ed up.

Most of the sounds seems muffled, most time i don’t hear the shots of guys 25 feets away (etc).

On most maps I have no sound, or missing sounds.

It’s the only game with such issues.

I own a Asus Xonar.

PS : I use headphones and it’s not a “headphone related” issue… seriously, read my first post.

I have turtle beach X4’s and the sound cuts out when too much is going on. And sometimes gunshots are heard in weird directions. Other games like modern warfare 1 & 2 the sound is unmatched. I had high hopes for this game after watching IGN updates but sadly this is another thing that is way below par. I have a few friends with turtle beaches and one with astos and they all say the same.

Yeah ,the sound engine is bugged as hell. On my country boards, people relates the same thing.

Sound crash, sound misplacement, sound muffle

All with different sound cards and headphones (passive and usb headphones)

Hope for a fix, I use the sound to play and spot the enemies and ongoing action, not just for the scenery !

Sound is fine by me. Sometimes some wierd things happens but it’s more than ok.

(and the sound in crysis 2 was horrible for me, misplaced weapon shot everytime)

Well, Crysis 2 isn’t the best exemple, I should use the BFBC2 exemple, it’s for me the best sound engine I heard so far.

I love the thumping sound and the change in sound during disorientation moments. but the positional audio is horrible, infact it’s hrrible inm ost games, only CoD made good use of positional audio, with a good 5.1 headset you got an audio wallhack. buti guess its coz this game has alot going on that positional audoi effects get lost.

Thanks for your opinion.

3 maps played tonight, 3 sound crash.

GG SD !

Did. And, as I wrote, the sound works perfectly well for me.

I’ve not heard this complaint often at all, which leads me to believe it’s not a fault of the game.

The cutting out on PC /is/ however, they need to fix that asap.

(Schwarzeis) #14

Yeah, there are sound issues

In cutscenes they talk to low, if you up the volume you’ll get your ears ruptured when the game actually starts

In the loading screens they talk to low, once again - turn it up and get your ears ruptured

At some maps the noise dissapears (ambient and background, so you only hear the radiotalk and the guns)

There are alot of small-ass stuff that makes this game seem bad in most peoples eyes - my friend said that he regret ordering BRINK and that it looks like they didn’t put much time into it

I don’t know if it’s a bug or a feature (!)

But when a guy fires a full clip, 15 meters away from me, I cannot hear the deflagrations.

I just hear the “suppression” fire or “a lot of basses” If I’m hit.

How Am i supposed to spot the enemy if I can’t hear the guns ? Seriously, I doubt Splash Damage has already played FPS at a high level (QW Enemy Territory, let me laugh) > You cannot do without the sound localization.

Another exemple : I fight a guy, he is hiding behind the wall and start to shoot before going uncovered, I never heard the deflagrations and so adapt to his behavior.

(keefy) #16

Its alot worse than Quakelives sound engine whcih has vanishing sounds and poor spatial awareness.

(Angry Machine) #17

1998 Half Life as a better sound engine then brink

I can spot enemies in 1998 HL Deathmatch, not in Brink T__T

(Angry Machine) #18

Any help is welcome.

I own a Xonar DS1, drivers up to date.

I never experienced issues in any games except Brink.

Devs ? A word please ?

I have to agree with the OP. I played ET for about 6 or 7 years, and the sound seemed much clearer. I could always tell where the action was going on just by listening to the gun sounds, grenade sounds, etc. I use pretty good headphones (Sennheiser HD 280 Pro) and the sound does seem flat indeed. I hear the gunshots of course, but it’s not always clear exactly where they’re coming from. And like someone else said, I often will get shot and will have to look around frantically to find the enemy when it should be immediately obvious where the gunshots are coming from.

Thanks for your report (HD280 Pro are good headphones for their price, better than lot of “gaming headphones”)
