Why is Long Jumping not part of the Tutorial? Along with other things.

So I went back into the tutorial to see how many dummies I could shoot (I got 11) and I renoticed that there is no mention of the long jump mechanic. I find this disconcerting because long jumping has become a very important part of my gameplay. Also not mentioned in the tutorial is the melee weapon speed increase. Also, no mention about the defibrillator charge capacity (Hold it longer, revive more health). Also, no mention of the repair rate/disarm rate mechanics. (They did mention engineers though) I hope this is only because it’s in open beta, but I hope they update the tutorail.
Anything else that should be in the tutorial?

Tutorials are generally used to tell you the basics of a game and don’t go beyond that. Would it be better if tutorials told you everything? Sure. However, that’s not a common practice, so they don’t have a reason to add on to it. With that said, it’s the age of the internet and they know any player looking for tips and tricks about the game are a mere click away from YouTube guides about the game. So while I’ll agree all game tutorials should explain all game mechanics (in sections), it’s really not that important.

If you stuff the tutorial with information, new players might get confused. It’s better to stick to the basics.

Jumping should probably be added in a very simple and short way. That way it won’t frustrate people but gets the idea into their head.

I propose this:
Long hallway, 3 holes in ground. Tutorial instructs you to run forward and jump over the first one, it’s a short hole, no problem. Tutorial then instructs you on how to long jump to get over the second one, easy, might take some people a couple of tries but shouldn’t be hard. The 3rd hole is too long for a long jump and has a broken wall on the left, then slightly further up a broken wall on the right, the game instructs you to jump/long jump towards the left wall and bounce off it, then bounce off the right wall which takes you to the other side.

Quite short, and quickly covers the basic movement the game offers, from there people just need to learn how to combo things efficiently. By getting people to actually do the moves themselves it should come quite naturally to them in-game.

Maybe long jumping might be a stretch, though I like what Ghosthree3 proposed. But I really think that the repair and disarm mechanics should be explained. It would be quick dialogue, or could even be part of the video, which could be funny. I will complement the devs on creating a short and refined tutorial that got the main points across, but I would also argue that it misses on the points that make dirty bomb unique.

Half-life tutorial had longjumping, even though you didn’t get it till the endgame. Why Dirty Bomb no has jumping long in teach?

(triteTongs) #7

It’s a pretty important feature IMO. If they don’t address it, it will feel like a bug that people discovered.

Does it at least get acknowledge in the tooltips?

Just break up the tutorial into different parts with rewards for completing each one.

-Medic Tutorial
-Fire Support Tutorial
-Engineer/Objective Tutorial
-Jumping Tutorial
-Loadout Card Tutorial

a link to some of the guides would probably work for now but I’d like to see a training map where you could try all mercs/weapons against targets/turrets

(Fate_6) #10

Quick noob question - could you clarify what long jumping is?

There ought to be multiple tutorials. Devs should focus on other, more important things for now, but when their idea board is empty, advanced movement, advanced objective, and advanced misc. tutorials would be pretty cool.

For example, did you know that secondary objectives can be destroyed with conventional attacks, not requiring the use of C4? It takes 5 grenades from fragger (or equivalent damage from guns or other damaging abilities) to accomplish this. (Source: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=457367246 #12)

You have a point. I learned a lot of those mechanics after watching videos when I got to freakin rank 8. That’s when I found out long jump, explaining why I can’t reach certain ledges and how people escape so fast with a jump. And the engineer repair speed and defib health thing became one of the must know to form a good team.
